NSWRL announce broadcast schedule

Continuing on from our extensive coverage of NSWRL competitions in 2011, the NSW Rugby League has today announced its broadcast schedule which will encompass the first month of the VB NSW Cup season as well as the elite Harold Matthews and SG Ball competitions.

Along with live scores across the 2GB and ABC radio networks, three community radio stations have again signed on to cover VB NSW Cup matches each weekend.

Hawkesbury Radio and HHH FM will cover games weekly and 2CCR will call Wentworthville’s Sunday home fixtures throughout season 2012.

Following on from the success of last year’s NSW Cup Grand Final which saw over 600,000 people tune in, the VB NSW Cup Grand Final will be again aired on Channel 9 as part of NRL Grand Final day.

The NSWRL’s highly successful show on Fox Sports will continue to be aired at 4.30pm on Fox Sports 2 HD and Fox Sports 2 each Wednesday in stunning high definition with full matches of the VB NSW Cup and special features on the Bundaberg Red Cup.

The “FIBROS” back at their former home Western Suburbs Magpies are flying back to their long-time base at Lidcombe Oval for the opening round of the VB NSW Cup.

With the Magpies Nest at Campbelltown Sports Stadium not available for the clubʼs season opener, theyʼll be lining up to face arch rivals the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles at the scene of so many of the infamous battles between the Fibros and the Silvertails

On Saturday 3rd March 2012, the Magpies will be calling their former base ʻHomeʼ once again in what promises to be a trip down memory lane for many Wests fans and Rugby League supporters in general.

The Magpies flew west from Lidcombe to Leumeah a quarter of a century ago and have not graced the hallowed turf of Lidcombe since 1986.

This nostalgic return to Lidcombe promises to be treasured and remembered for a long time to come.

Itʼs a rare opportunity for the Magpies and their supporters to relive memories of yesteryear when the famous black and whites became entrenched in Rugby League folklore as the ʻFibrosʼ representing the broad community that is the Western Suburbs of Sydney.

Trial - Wests v Cabramatta match report

Although on the wrong end of the scores in each period, coach Trevor Schodel says he is very happy with the hit out against the 2011 Bundaberg Cup champions and has identified areas in the squad he believes can be strengthened. The games were played in 2 x 30 mins and 1 x 40 mins periods with Cabramatta winning the first period 16 to 6, the second period 16 to 4 and the third period 12 to 8. Cabramatta were able to bring 3 strong squads to the game compared to Wests 2 squads which were missing some key personell in the backs including their leading try scorer from last week's International 9's - Sharlon Taki and all their big front rowers including Eddie Sua.

The magpies certainly missed their big men up front and lacked that go forward at times.There was plenty dropped balls, forced passes and missed tackles from both sides that resulted in tries. Wests showed speed in the backs and there was a superb 50m intercept try by former Oaks winger Nick Sbezzi in the second period. Mick Lekkas in the centres showed he will push for selection in the top side with some good runs and offloads and was rewarded with a try late in the third period.
Minto Cobras 2011 A Grade premiership winning centre, Aaron Teariki made some big hits during his time on field and will be a key man in Trevor's plans for the season ahead. Former Campbelltown Eagles second rower Tom Morrison had a solid game and was sin binned late in the second period after a scuffle with his opponent.
Another to impress was second rower Buck Hall, who came over from New Zealand this week looking for a chance to showcase his wares.

The halves Trent Touma, Chris Hay and Nigel Millgate showed during the 3 periods that they will form a good combination with their outside men.

This week, Trevor will sift through the squad for the final trial which will be played on saturday 18th March against Manly at Brookvale. From there he will pick his final squad for the up coming season.

Happy Birthday to..Brett Hodgson, Joe Thomas & Tony Cosatto

The Western Suburbs Magpies family would like to wish Brett, Joe and Tony a happy birthday.

Brett Hodgson (Feb 12th) rose from the ranks of the Wests Junior League where he played for Ingleburn RSL & ESA (Eagle Vale/St Andrews). He made his 1st grade debut for Wests coming off the bench against South Queensland Crushers in rnd 11, 1997 and his first run on appearance was in rnd 13 against the roosters playing on the wing and scoring 2 tries but later became an accomplished fullback & goal kicker.Brett played 49 first grade games for the magpies scoring 18 tries and kicking 37 goals and 1 f/g. He was the magpies leading try and pointscorer in 1998 ( 10 tries and 67 points) and leading pointscorer in 1999 ( 56 points).
When the joint venture was formed, Brett chose instead to sign with Parramatta and played there from 2000 to 2003, playing in the 2001 NRL Grand Final and representing NSW in 2002. He joined the Wests Tigers in 2004 and played 102 first grade games for WT which included the 2005 premiership and another tilt at State of Origin. He was the NRL's leading pointscorer in 2005 with 308 points and also hold the record for the most points by an individual in a finals match.
Since leaving the NRL, Brett has played in the English Super League for Huddersfield and Warrington winning a Man of Steel award in 2009.

Joe Thomas (Feb 13th) was one of the Big 4 who joined Wests from Canterbury in 1991 along with coach, Warren Ryan. Joe played mostly at hooker but could also play lock. He rose through the Souths juniors to play for the rabbitohs making his first grade debut in 1984. He joined Canterbury in 1988 winning a premiership with them in his first year. He played 3 season for Wests - 1991-93 playing a total of 53 first grade games scoring 4 tries making his debut in rnd 1 against Balmain. After leaving Wests he joined Illawarra in 1994 before retiring soon after. He later coached lower grades at Sydney City Roosters.

Tony Cosatto (Feb 15th) was a centre and member of the successful Ashcroft High team that won all before them in 1985. He was graded by the eels that same year ( the Liverpool area was then part of Parramatta juniors)and made first grade debut for the eels in 1986. He joined the magpies in 1990 and played just the 2 seasons playing 43 first grade matches scoring 11 tries. He was the magpies leading try scorer in 1990 with 8 tries. Tony made his first grade debut for Wests in their 12 all draw with Brisbane in rnd 1, 1990 at Campbelltown. He joined the roosters (still called Eastern Suburbs then) in 1992 playing 2 seasons before retiring.

Australian Rugby League Commission

After more than three years of speculation, hand-wringing and boardroom wranglings, the long-awaited Australian Rugby League Commission will finally see the light of day on Friday.

New chairman, Queenslander John Grant, a member of the 1972 Kangaroos World Cup team, will launch the commission at the code's new Moore Park headquarters on a historic day for rugby league in Australia.

NRL chief executive David Gallop will continue in a similar role alongside Grant, with seven other commission members made up of heavyweights from the world of business, education and advertising.

The new commission will see the dissolution of the current ARL and officially mark the end of News Limited's involvement in the running of the game.

The ARL will hold its final meeting at 8.30 (AEST) on Friday morning to officially dissolve the body.

The new commission will be unveiled at a media conference fronted by Grant 11.30am (AEST) - just under three weeks' before the start of the 2012 NRL season.

It will take control of the game at a critical time, with television, internet and sponsorship deals all expiring at the end of the season.

Gary Pemberton, the man widely credited with securing record broadcasting rights for the Sydney Olympics, is on the new board and likely to be entrusted with securing a new lucrative TV deal.

He will be pushing to secure an agreement that is close to the $1.25 billion pocketed by the AFL last year.

However, that task will be severely tested in the wake of last week's High Court decision to allow Optus to show delayed AFL highlights on their handsets, which is in direct competition to Telstra's exclusive contract worth $153m over five years.

The NRL were looking for a similar deal and there are now concerns they could be sold short again.

Pemberton will be joined on the commission by Harris Farm founder and chairwoman Catherine Harris; brand strategist Ian Elliot and business heavyweights Peter Gregg and Jeremy Sutcliffe.

Highly-respected indigenous educationalist Dr Chris Sarra - Queensland's Australian of the Year in 2009 and a key figure in the Indigenous All Stars concept - is also on board along with former NSW skipper Wayne Pearce.

The end of the current ARL will not affect the NSWRL and QRL, who will continue to oversee representative sides in their respective states.

The Country Rugby League will merge with the NSWRL and be based at the new HQ in Sydney.

Illawarra Cutters enter the NSW Cup

Illawarra Coal Rugby League has today announced the name of its new VB NSW Cup team at gala launch today in Wollongong.

The side, which will be known as the Illawarra Cutters, has already been able to secure a major sponsor in Illawarra Coal as well as a sleave sponsor in Illawarra Credit Union and a shorts sponsor, LX Electrical.
Illawarra Coal VB NSW Cup Chairman, Sean O’Connor, said he hoped the people of the Illawarra would embrace the new side and its moniker.

“The name Cutters refers to coal-cutters or coal-hewers, men who perform well under extreme conditions, a perfect analogy for the modern Rugby League player,” O’Connor said.

When unveiling the new team logo, Illawarra Coal President, Colin Bloomfield, was particularly pleased the new name and logo embodied the company’s values of pride, passion and performance.

“Illawarra Coal is delighted to offer our support to the Illawarra Cutters VB NSW Cup team, which helps form the pathway for local talented Rugby League players to move into the National Rugby League competition,” Bloomfield said.

“The Illawarra Cutter team name is synonymous with our local coal cutting industry which has been an integral part of the local region for more than a century, just as Rugby League has been a favourite past time for locals for 100 years.”

Many of the Cutters players were involved in an NRL trial for the Dragons last Saturday against the Bulldogs and Coach Paul McGregor says they still have to put the finishing touches on their pre-season preparations but they would be ready for their Round One match against Cronulla at WIN Stadium.

“Last December we had an in-house trial and we were very scratchy in a number of areas, as a new group is,” McGregor said.

“We hadn’t played together, we hadn’t been together, and we hadn’t trained together at that period of time.

“We had two defensive lapses on the weekend (against the Bulldogs) and the boys were shown that if you do have defensive lapses in this arena you will get caught.

“They’re (Bulldogs) are a definite top four finish and for us to show that kind of showing against quality opposition, it is a good lead up into what we need to do.”

The VB NSW Cup will kick-off on Saturday, March 3, across NSW.

Still time to join a Group 6 team

The 2012 season is just around the corner, and many clubs have been in training for a few weeks but there is time to join the Country Rugby League Group 6 competition.

2011 was a great year for Rubgy League in our area and 2012 is shaping up to be even better. Also old Group 6 clubs Bundanoon & Bargo have returned to the competition and will take the paddock in 2nd Division.

Our comp offers Rugby League for every level of player whether your just moving up from Junior League to the serious First Grader who is looking to step up to the next level.

MAGPIES READY TO FLY IN JUNIOR REPS

Players from the Western Suburbs Magpies Harold Matts and SG Ball teams have been presented with their gear kit for the 2012 Junior Representative season.

The Magpies take on South Sydney at Erskineville Oval on Saturday, February 11. Kick-off for Harold Matthews (U16) is 11am and SG Ball (U18) at 12.30pm.

The Magpies have some exciting young talent in their ranks. SG Ball players Billy Kitt, Harry Grove and Sol Kamuta have already spent some time training with the Wests Tigers U20s squad during the pre-season.

In the Harold Matthews squad, Mason Cerruto, Robbie Vai and Makaere Bush are backing up again from a strong season in the same competition last year. The Magpies are predicting a bright future for Cerruto, Vaj and Bush.

Chairman: Wests Tigers NSW Cup team is an Option

NEW Magpies chairman Mick Liubinskas said the Wests Tigers fielding a combined team in the NSW Cup next year was a “possibility”, but there were still key issues to work through.

The former Balmain and Wests player was elected Western Suburbs Magpies football club chairman last week as part of a new-look board.

The Concord resident said the Wests side of the NRL joint-venture needed to work together.

The Wests side of the club is made up of Wests Ashfield Leagues, Wests Campbelltown Leagues and the Magpies football club.

Wests Ashfield Leagues gave in-principle support recently to Balmain and Wests fielding a combined team in next year’s second tier NSW Cup under the Wests Tigers banner.

Liubinskas supports a combined team, which would alternate between Balmain and Magpies colours.

Balmain are yet to make a decision on the combined team.

“It’s a possibility, but nothing is set in concrete. I see a lot of credit in it though,” Liubinskas said.

“Wests and Balmain haven’t won a comp in the NSW Cup for a while now and if you look at St George Illawarra they are moving forward with a combined team this year.”

But Liubinskas said it was vital the different Wests stakeholders worked together to ensure the success of the Wests Tigers and the future of the Magpies.

Wests magpies Cabramatta 9's match reports

In very hot and humid conditions, The Western Suburbs magpies returned to the Cabramatta International 9's for the first time since 2009 and again finished top of their pool.

Game 1
Western Suburbs 8 def Liverpool Titans 6

With raining falling continuously for 4 days leading up to the tournament and then the sun popping out in the morning, the conditions were very humid and hot at New Era Stadium but the magpies got of to a brilliant start. Their opponants in game 1 was Liverpool Titans, a young club only two years old that play in the Western Suburbs Junior Rugby League competition.

The magpies score in the first half in a blind side play from a scrum win with the ball being passed to rangy centre Greg Davis who drew his opposite with a beautifully timed passed to send flying winger Sharlon Taki on his way to the tryline. The shot at goal was unsuccessful.

The first half was highlighted by the contiunal bullocking runs from dynamo pocket battleship, William Siale who last year was playing SG Ball for St George. He is certainly one that got away from the dragons den.

The second magpies try was on the back of one Siale's damaging runs. From the play the ball, a chain passing movement along the backs resulted in Sharlon scoring his second try and again the shot at goal was unsuccessful.

The final score was 8 to 6 sounds close but this was not a true reflection of the game which the magpies dominated as the titans scored with 90 secs left on the clock after a magpies dropped ball was capitalised on by the titans.

Game 2
Western Suburbs 24 def Kingsgrove Colts 14

The magpies played this game at 1pm (the Titans game kicked off at 10.40am) so there was a long gap inbetween games for the magpies. The ground, whilst still wet in some patches near the scoreboard corner was holding up very well.

Wests got off to a flyer when Kingsgrove dropped a ball near halfway and it was kick through by halfback, Chris Nay who then made a brilliant pick up but was tackled just short of the tryline. A resulting penalty from holding the man down resulted in a quick tap with winger and local Campbelltown junior, Keanu Rogers* scoring out wide. Goal attempt unsuccessful.

Wests second try was from sustained pressure on the Colts tryline with bustling centre, Michael Lekkas scoring in the corner. Goal attempt again unsucessful.

Wests next try was the result of a jolting tackle by the hungry magpie pack forcing a scrum. From the ensuing scrum win near halfway, a brilliant passing movement saw Sharlon Taki score his 3rd try of the day. And at last, the goal attemtped was successful. At halftime, Wests 14 Kingsgrove 0

Kingsgrove were the first to score in the second half but the magpies responded almost immediately. Another jolting tackle, this time by lanky centre, Chris Faae near the Colts 30m line result in a scrum feed for the magpies. Big forward, AJ Pesimono then broke from the scrum with ball in his hand pushing aside would be tacklers before a neat pass saw the crafty Todd Sault backing up to score. Goal attempt unsuccessful.

Not lying down, Kingsgrove came up with a four pointer to reduce to score to 18 to 10. However another damaging run by William Siale resulted in a penalty to the magpies with former Kingsrove fullback Michael La Manna scoring and Chris Nay added the extras to make it 24 to 10 before Kingsgrove scored in the dying stages.

*Keanu Rogers - local Campbelltown junior having played for Campbelltown Eagles (also known as East Campbelltown) and Macarthur Saints. He played SG Ball for Western Suburbs magpies in 2010 & 2011.

Game 3
Cup Quarter Final
Mounties 8 Western Suburbs 0

After finishing on top of their pool with 2 wins 0 losses, the magpies played Bundaberg Cup powerhouse and new Canberra Raiders NRL feeder club, Mounties in the quarter finals. The game was one of missed chances for the magpies with two efforts resulting in firstly Chris Nay and then Sharlon Taki being brought down short of the tryline. The defence of both teams was outstanding and the fact that both of Mounties tries were scored within the last 60 secs of each half is a testiment to both sides.

Just also, the Balmain Ryde Eastwood squad contained 3 former magpie NSW Cup players from 2011, Dayne Craig, Jay Masueli and David Harris plus coach, Leo Epifaina. Whilst the tigers finished 2nd in their pool and therefore eliminated from the Cup quarter final, they reached the Trophy playoffs but were defeated by The Entrance 20 to 16. The form of the 3 magpies was outstanding in this game with a lovely shortball from David Harris put galloping front rower Jay on 20 metre run under the posts. David continues to develop as a player under Leo Epifania's coaching and even showed his kicking skills in this game. The magpies wish all 3 best of luck in their quest for NRL first grade honours as we do to all former magpies players at other clubs looking for a similar dream. Once a magpie ALWAYS a magpie.

Magpies to Balmain. Pathway to Success

Congratulations to the following former Western Suburbs Magpies players who will pull on a Balmain Orange and Black jumper this weekend at the Cabramatta Nines and at their NSW Cup trial match.

For the Cabramatta 9's former Magpies David Harris, Daine Craig and Marc Russell have been named. The side will also be coached by former Magpie first grader and successful Magpies NSW Cup coach Leo Epifania.

For the NSW Cup trial match against Wests Illawarra, former Magpies superstars Nathan Waters, Shaun Spence and Josh Davis has been named for Balmain. The NSW Cup trial is being held in the heart of Magpie country at Saturday Milton Park, Railway Parade, Ingleburn/Macquarie Fields February 4th at 2:00PM.

JAMES TEDESCO SIGNS NEW THREE-YEAR DEAL

Fresh from signing a new three-year deal with Wests Tigers, James Tedesco is now focusing his attention on securing the number one jersey in 2012.

The former St Gregorys College Campbelltown student can’t help but smile when he reflects back on his rapid rise to the NRL squad.

Twelve months ago, the Camden Rams/Eagle Vale junior was playing SG Ball for Western Suburbs Magpies in the junior representative competition after finishing 2010 as an Australian Schoolboys player.

The rise has been that quick for the 19-year-old that he hasn’t even done a pre-season of NYC training. He won’t need to now after being promoted full-time to the NRL top 25 man squad.

“I still can’t believe how fast things have happened but I’m not complaining at all,’’ Tedesco said.

“My focus this time last year was to play well for the Magpies to earn possibly a call up to train with the Wests Tigers U20s side or even to get a few games on the wing.”

Tedesco’s chance came in Rd 13 last year against Newcastle at Leichhardt Oval, coming off the interchange bench.

A fortnight later, on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Leichhardt Oval and in just his third game in the NYC, Tedesco scored 4 tries to equal the Club tryscoring record for most tries in a game. Then U20s Coach Grant Jones had finally found the full-back he was looking for.

Fast forward to today and Wests Tigers Head Coach Tim Sheens is keen to give Tedesco some time at full-back during the trials against Parramatta at Bluetongue Stadium (February 11) and Sydney Roosters at Campbelltown Sports Stadium (Feb 18).

It is not only a well deserved reward for his commitment to pre-season training but the chance to show his credentials at the senior level.

“It has been a great experience training with the senior squad. The workload is a lot more than what I am used to but I’ve learnt so much already. I’m loving it,’’ Tedesco said.

“My goal this season is to play consistent football. There will be weeks when I will have my ups and downs but if I can find some consistency in the U20s, you never know what it may lead to.

“I’m just honoured to have my name mentioned as a candidate for the full-back role as there are some good players here fighting for the position.”

Happy birthday to..........Jason Taylor

The Western Suburbs magpie family wish Jason a happy birthday on Feb 2.

Jason was a skillful but slightly built goalkicking halfback who was one of the first of a batch of locals who rose from the junior ranks of the new Western Suburbs juniors based in the Liverpool/Campbelltown region. He originally played for Green Valley and Ashcroft before spending his final year of high school at St Gregorys College, Campbelltown where in 1989, he was a member of the side's win in the Commonwealth Bank Cup Schoolboys competition and winning the player of the series award. He was also a member of the Australian Schoolboys side that year.

Jason made his first grade debut for Western Suburbs in round 1 1990 against Brisbane coming off the bench. He had his run on debut for the magpies in round 3 1990 against Newcastle. He played 86 first grade games for the magpies between 1990-1993 scoring 6 tries, 225 goals and 12 field goals. Tensions between Jason and Wests coach, Warren Ryan arose when Jason was dropped from first grade andthis led to Jason leaving the magpies to join North Sydney in 1994. He played for the bears and the joint venture Northern Eagles from 1994 to 2000 before finishing his career with deserved Grand Final appearance with Parramatta in 2001.

In all, Jason played 276 first grade games scoring 47 tries, 942 goals and 35 field goals for a tally of 2107 points which at the time, was a record for the NSWRL/ARL/NRL competition which included an astonishing run of 194 consecutive games in first grade between 1992 to 2000.

Jason was also Western Suburb's leading pointscorer from 1990-93. He was the competition's highest point scorer in 1996 (238) and 1997 (242) as well as winning the prestiges Rothmans Medal in 1996. Jason represented NSW at State of Origin in 1993 whilst with the magpies coming off the bench in 2 games that year.

After retirement as a player, the coaching bug bit Jason and he started coaching lower grade at Parramatta eventually becoming coach of the Parramatta Premier League side (now called NSW Cup) winning the2005 premiership. He was an assistant coach to Brian Smith at the eels and was appointed caretaker first grade coach during the 2006 season after Brian left the club. He had already agreed to join Souths as their assistant coach in 2007 but was quickly elevated to the head coach role and guided Souths to the semi finals in 2007, their first appearance in finals since 1989. Jason however was dismissed as Souths coach after the 2009 season and was appointed as a kicking coach by the Sydney Roosters in 2010 before being promoted to the Sydney Roosters Toyota Cup U20 head coach in 2011.

Western Suburbs coach Trevor Schodel has named his 15 man squad for the upcoming Cabramatta International 9's Tournament to be played Saturday 4th Feb at New Era Stadium, Cabramatta. The magpies have drawn Pool E alongside Liverpool and Kingsgrove. Wests first match will be against Liverpool starting at 10.40am and then play Kingsgrove at 11.40am.

Happy birthday to............Warren Boland

The Western Suburbs magpies family wish former player and captain, Warren Boland a very happy birthday on 1st February.

Warren was something of a rare breed in rugby league in that he was captain of a side whilst playing on the wing. It is unusual to have a captain who is so far removed from the centre of the action.

Warren played lower grades for St George, winning an U23 title with the dragons in 1974. He took a year off in 1975 and joined Balmain in 1976 as he was attending Macquarie Uni at the time. He was unable to cement a regular first grade spot at the tigers and joined Western Suburbs in 1979 along with several other fringe first graders from the tigers. He was an immediate starter in first grade with the magpies and finished the season with 8 tries. With the loss in 1980 of so many experienced players to other clubs, Wests coach Roy Masters appointed Warren as first grade captain and it was a position Warren held until he retired at the end of 1983 with the only exception being when he was out injured. Warren suffered a broken leg early in the 1981 which kept him out for several months but came back towards the back end of the season as the magpies made a charge for the finals but unfortunately missed the finals (the only time in Roy's time at Wests they missed the first grade finals).

In all, Warren played just under 100 first grade games for the magpies scoring 22 tries. He was named as wing and captain of the Western Suburbs Team of the Eighties.

After retirement, Warren found a niche as a rugby league commentator working for ABC calling the Saturday afternoon game during the late 80's & early 90's with Arthur Beetson and then with Fox. He has also done commentary for the ABC calling the QLD Cup rugby league matches.

First Trial for 2012 - Wests Magpies 32 Kingsgrove Colts 16

The new look magpies took the field in their first trial match in 2012 today against Bundaberg Cup outfit, Kingsgrove Colts at Scarborough Park, Monterey and came away with an impressive 32 to 16 victory. The match was played in hot and very gusty conditions and coach Trevor Schodel gave his entire squad of around 30 players a run during the course of the match. Due to the conditions (and lack of touch judges), it was decided that no shots at goals would be made.

The magpies were led by former Cronulla and Newtown halfback, Nigel Millgate and it was Nigel who set up the first try in the 12th minute with a bomb to the corner which was dropped by the Colts winger and eventually the ball came to second rower, Alex Frail to score a four pointer. Nigel was in the thick of it again when he scored Wests their second try 3 minutes later which came after some solid defence by the magpies resulted in a dropped ball by the Colts and four tackles later the try resulted. Kingsgrove scored an opportunistic try with a deft ingoal kick resulted in a try - the only problem was that there was no ingoal area marked. Due to the hot and windy conditions, the game was played in four quarters and this proved an ideal opportunity for Trevor to rotate his players. Wests were up 8 to 4 at quarter time.

Captain, Nigel Millgate set up the 3rd Wests try 6 minutes into the second quarter with a cross field kick which was plucked out of the air by the winger to score in the corner. Wests up 12 to 4. However from the kickoff, Wests lost possession from a jolting first tackle and within 2 rucks, Kingsrove scored to make it 12 to 8. Wests were able to maintain defensive pressure from the kickoff and a clearing kick on the last tackle from Kingsgrove was only able to land near halfway. Then in a passing movement from winger to winger on the first tackle, Wests were in again thanks to rangy centre, Greg Davis to make the score16 to 8. Wests fifth try 14 minutes into the second quarter saw a magnificent sweeping backline movement with quick hands that would make even the Brisbane Broncos proud. The halftime score was Wests 20 Kingsgrove 8.

At halftime Trevor drilled into his team to keep their defensive line intact, back up the man with the ball and that they keep looking out for each other. He said the 2 tries by Kingsgrove were from little lapses in concentration by Wests and overall the defensive line had been very good.The first 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter saw some big hits from the huge Wests pack led by Eddie Sua. However it was Kingsgrove who scored the first try 7 minutes in. Sustained pressure saw the magpies line breached with consecutive sets of 6 and the Colts reduced the score to 20 to 12. The next 10 minutes was a dour struggle as Trevor used several replacements and Kingsgrove were able to score another tryjust before the break to reduce the score even further, 20 to 16.

A stern 3/4 time talk by Trevor and some changes at the break saw the magpies come out with renewed vigor in the final quarter posting tries in the 4th, 9th and 18th minutes to win the game 32 to 16.

Trevor said he was extremely happy with the hit out from the boys today particularly with the conditions being what they were. He was very impressed with the efforts from the big pack Wests have and the overallefforts from every one that played. Trevor is confident he has a squad that will be very competitive in 2012 and will put the final touches for a main squad in the coming weeks when further trials will be played.

The magpies will enter a squad for the up coming Cabramatta International 9's tournament to be held at Cabramatta's New Era Stadium on Saturday 4th Feb commencing at 10am. Trevor will finalise his lineup later this week for the tournament and a draw will be issued by the organisiers shortly.

The Western Suburbs magpies family wish former player Trevor Cogger a very happy birthday for January 30.

Trevor is perhaps the last great clubman from the Lidcombe era to play for the magpies. He could play anywhere in the backline but was at his best when playing five eighth. Trevor came up from the juniors through the Berala Bears (the same club as Alan Neil) and is a life member of that club.

Contrary to popular belief, Trevor made his 1st grade debut in round 3 against Canterbury at Belmore in 1981 which was not the game that Trevor gained widespread media attention for. That game was the following year but also against the bulldogs this time at Lidcombe. The legend is that after Trevor completed his lower grade game duties, he settled down on the hill with his mates and a meat pie (some say he had a beer as well) to watch the 1st grade game when the public address system message came out, "Trevor Cogger please report to the Wests dressing room". The rest is folklore - Trevor scored 2 tries - his first in the top grade and the magpies won 16 to 7.

In all, Trevor played 308 games for the magpies scoring a club record 88 tries and included 160 first grade games with 48 tries. He was the magpies leading tryscorer in the 1985 season with 9 tries. His playing career spanned 11 seasons - 1981 to 1991. His last game for the magpies was the 1991 Prelliminary semi final against Canberra with the magpies going down 22 to 8. He also had a stint in England with Leigh during the 1985/6 season. He played in the last game Wests played at Lidcombe Oval (August 31 1986 against Easts) and the first official home game Wests played at Campbelltown - March 7 1987 against Parramatta (although he did play for Wests against Easts at Campbelltown on June 1 1986 but this was designated as an Easts home game).

Trevor is a Life Member of the Western Suburbs Magpies, was named in the Wests team of the eighties as five eighth and is in the magpies Hall of Fame. His younger brother John also played briefly for the magpies in the mid 80's.

Trevor played for the magpies at a time when mostly the club was fighting for survival season after season but always remained loyal to the magpies knocking back rival offers from wealthier clubs. A truly great clubman - a magpie legend.

HE HAS a wealth of sporting experience, from coaching at elite level to covering 10 Olympics - largely for this newspaper. But the work Roy Masters regards among his most significant was with the Australian Sports Commission during its early years.

Masters has been made a member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to sport through executive roles with the commission, to rugby league and to journalism.
He was an inaugural board member of the commission in 1984 and served on it until 2008. He chaired two subcommittees which he believes left a legacy.

The first was the Aussie Sport program, which modified rules and equipment to encourage children to take part. The former rugby league coach (of St George and of Western Suburbs, where he famously exhorted his team of battlers - the ''fibros'' - to take it up to the Manly ''silvertails'') recalled league was one of the first to accommodate youngsters. Others quickly followed - baseball (Tee Ball), water polo (Flipper Ball), Walla Rugby and Kanga Cricket.

''It was the mid-'80s and these took off in the primary schools,'' he said. ''By the late '90s, early 2000s, when Australia was - in my opinion - the dominant force in world sport on a per capita basis, many of those kids had come out of the Aussie Sport program.''

The other important work of the commission came through its drugs-in-sport committee, which Masters also chaired. In the mid-1980s, many sports were awash with drugs. Canadian sprinter Ben Johnson was disqualified at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and athletes were dying from excessive steroid use.

The commission introduced testing and encouraged sports to join through an effective tactic. ''We told them they would get federal funding unless they had an anti-doping policy,'' Masters said. ''Eventually, we got Australia to be the foremost leader in the testing of athletes.''

Masters, who said he was ''absolutely delighted'' with his award, continues to write for The Sydney Morning Herald.

Happy birthday to..........Alan Neil

The Western Suburbs magpies family wish former player Alan Neil a very happy birthday on January 27.

Alan, whose nickname was "bloodnut" was a halfback who came up from the old Wests junior club, Berala Bears and made his first grade debut during the 1977 season. However it wasn't until the departure of Tommy Raudonikis after the 1979 season that Alan was able to cement his position as halfback in the magpies first grade side. He was an important member of Wests semi final campaign in 1980 which unfortunately ended with a loss to Easts in the Preliminary Final. Alan continued to play for Wests until 1982 and played his last first grade match for the magpies coming off the bench in their 11 to 7 loss to Easts in the Preliminary Final that year.

In all, he played 67 1st grade games for Wests scoring 21 tries. After leaving Wests at the end of 1982, Alan had stints with Easts and St George. His brothers also played for Western Suburbs - Michael who played 1st grade from 1983-86 before joining Balmain and Illawarra and Craig, who played 1st grade in 1985/6.

WESTERN SUBURBS MAGPIES PRESS RELEASE

Meetings of the Board of Wests Ashfield Leagues Club and the new Board of Western Suburbs Football Club have breathed new life into the Magpies to ensure the team will compete in the 2012 State Cup and provide a springboard for junior players to aim for the highest levels of Rugby League.

The Board of Wests Ashfield last week agreed to restore funding to the Magpies, and that further funds would be available in future years, subject to the outcome of governance matters relating to the football club.

These were resolved at the Magpies meeting on Tuesday January 24 with the election of former player Mick Liubinskas as Chairman.
The new administration is committed to developing a plan to ensure the Magpies will continue to look after their district at all levels.

Wests Ashfield Leagues Club will remain the primary source of funding for the Magpies, but the level of funds provided as always will depend on future developments relating to the club industry which is under considerable pressure from various outside forces.

Talks will continue between the Leagues Club, the Magpies and Wests Tigers regarding the possibility of uniting the State Cup teams of foundation clubs Wests and Balmain beyond 2012.

Discussions will be expanded to include Wests Campbelltown Leagues and the wider Wests community and will consider the views of all.

No decision on the likely operations of any of the shareholders in Wests Tigers has yet been made, but the Magpies have taken the lead in being prepared to discuss the future and want to listen to the concerns of their members.

The new Magpies Board believes that a strengthened link with Wests Tigers will satisfy Sydney’s growing south-western region’s appetite to compete in Rugby League at all levels and any new opportunities that might emerge, while providing football with connections proudly dating back to the launch of the game in 1908.

The Board will continue to support and promote the unequalled treasure house of history and tradition that has enabled Wests to survive various carve-ups and relocations to become an important contributor to success in the NRL through The Magpies and Wests Tigers.

Under the Chairmanship of Mick Liubinskas, the Magpies will keep warbling throughout their second century.

Jeff Aplitt

Popular Western Suburbs magpie and Wests Tigers volunteer, Jeff Aplitt is currently recovering in Bankstown Hospital after suffering a stroke recently. Jeff attends all magpies NSW Cup matches being the change room attendant and sin bin official and also helps out at Wests Tigers matches and Wests junior league matches. He has been a volunteer with the senior magpies since the late 1980's and was previously involved with the junior magpies squads back in the Lidcombe days.

He is a true champion of rugby league doing everything from working on the gate, sin bin official, doorman, manager and is always one of the last to leave the dressing room after the game.

The magpie family extends its warm wishes to Jeff for a speedy recovery.

Coach Trevor Schodel reports that he has had 2 players from the NZ Warriors junior development squad come over to try their luck with the magpies and will be on show at this game.
This year's squad has a HUGE forward pack, with many old magpie observers saying its the biggest pack the magpies have had in years. There is pace in the backs and a crafty pair of halves.
Halfback, Nigel Millgate will captain the side.

Happy Birthday to.......Noel Kelly and Terry Hill

Jan 22 - the Western Suburbs Magpies would like give a big happy birthday to Noel "Ned" Kelly and Terry Hill.

Noel is one of the magpies favourite sons. A ferocious, tough, uncompromising forward, he joined the magpies in 1961 (the same year his good mate, John Hayes made his first grade debut for the magpies) after playing at Ipswich and Ayr, representing QLD and Australia along the way. He was a member of the magpies famous grand final sides of 1961, 62 & 63 and continued to play for the magpies until 1969 - being the captain/caoch from 66 to 69. He played 115 first grade games for Western Suburbs scoring 6 tries. Equally at home at hooker or prop, he never took a backward step on the field and was sent off more times then he cares to remember - but that did include scrum infringements (they don't have scrum infringements these days let alone being sent off for one). He had the honour of making 3 Kangaroo tours - 1959/60, 1963/4 & 1967/8.

After having one season as capatin/coach of Wollongong in 1970, Noel retired as a player but not long after, was coaxed over to a coaching role at North Sydney and eventually coached their first grade squad from 1973 to 1976. He coached a Combined Sydney side that toured New Zealand in 1976, with Tommy Raudonikis as captain.

Noel was an inaugural inductee into the Western Suburbs Hall of Fame, was named hooker and captain of the Western Suburbs Team of the Century, prop in the Wests Tigers Team of the Century, named in the Queensland Team of the Century, named as one of the 100 Greatest Rugby League players in Australia in the Centenary season of 2008 and most recently as an ambassador for the Men of League Foundation.

Noel Kelly - a true Western Suburbs Magpie Legend.

Terry Hill, who turns 40 on Jan 22, was a solid and punishing centre, joined the magpies in 1992 forming a more than useful combination with former Canberra centre, Mark Bell. Terry came through the South Sydney junior ranks eventually playing first grade with the rabbitohs but then wanted to join the magpies saying he wanted to be coached by Warren Ryan. However the new draft system had been implemented by the NSWRL at the time and Terry reluctantly was forced to join the Eastern Suburbs roosters as they had picked him in the draft. Once the draft was challenged in court and defeated, Terry was free to join the magpies. He played for the magpies for just the 1992 and 1993 seasons before going on to greater things with Manly before joining the Wests Tigers and then returning to Manly. He played 33 first grade games for the magpies scoring 7 tries. He also made his State of Origin debut for NSW whilst playing for the magpies.

So to both Noel and Terry, the Western Suburbs Magpies wish you both a very happy birthday for Jan 22.

Just on a sadder note, Jan 22 is also the birthday of the late Arthur Beetson. Rest in Peace big fella.

Joint venture statement by the board

THE board of Wests Ashfield Leagues Club has responded to recent media reports concerning Western Suburbs Magpies.

The leagues club stated it had continued to work with Wests Tigers to achieve the best results for the joint venture while continuing to support and respect the heritage, history and contribution of the Magpies.
The leagues club has agreed to support a single NSW Cup team, representative of both joint venture clubs, in the 2013 season.

Wests Tigers and Wests Ashfield Leagues Club agreed that the Magpies are recognised as the district club in the Campbelltown area, the Magpies will continue to participate (as the Magpies) in junior representative Harold Matthews and SG Ball and, where appropriate, other competitions. Magpies retains all of their rights, including the ability to review the operation of a single State Cup team in future years.
Wests Tigers will continue to work with the Magpies to ensure appropriate pathways are met for the junior players in the south west.

The 2013 combined State Cup playing strip would alternate between Wests and Balmain colours.
Wests Ashfield Leagues Club recognises the significant financial contribution required to meet obligations to all rugby league stakeholders and the need to prioritise the appropriation of available funding to meet these needs.

Wests Ashfield Leagues Club deputy chairman Russell Smith said it was important to keep focus on the real issues at play in this situation. "Wests Ashfield Leagues remains totally committed to the continuing sustainable role of Wests Magpies as a vital component in the structure of rugby league to continue to provide a well-defined and positive pathway for aspiring players in the Campbelltown and surrounding regions," he said.

Magpies plead for support to secure their playing future

WHEN Trevor Schodel applied for the position of coach of Magpies’ senior rugby league team he overlooked the essential criteria: to be a jack-of-all-trades.
But he’s adaptable. With just seven weeks before the kick-off of the 2012 NSW Rugby League State Cup season, Schodel is madly trying to drum up sponsorship dollars to ensure the team gets on the field. After that, he says, it’s up to the players to prove why the rugby league foundation club deserves to survive.
Last season Wests Tigers stated they would support only one NSW Cup team in 2012. Now, Wests Ashfield said it would stop funding the Magpies and support the Balmain Eastwood-Ryde club.
Amid some fierce politicking, Magpies chairman Paul Dillon has resisted pressure to resign and is confident the $300,000 funding from Ashfield will be forthcoming this year. The Ashfield board meets today and he is sure the Magpies will be discussed.

A new look Western Suburbs Magpies NSW Cup squad for 2012.

New magpies coach Trevor Schodel loves nothing more than a challenge and he reports his charges are training the house down and is very happy with the squad he has assembled. Whilst it is missing NRL first graders, Trevor says the players he has all want to play for the magpies, "They are here because they all want to play for the magpies, they all want to an opportunity and the magpies are giving them that chance" he said. There is no one in the squad that are under any illusions about the demands that lay ahead of them.

Players have been recruited from clubs in the local Wests Junior league, Group 6, Bundaberg Red Cup, Illawarra Carlton league, NRL U20 squads, other junior league areas (incl Penrith, St george) and even overseas.There are only 2 faces from the 2011 side (rookie of the year Amanono Tovio and Alex Frail who returned to Dubbo during the season) who have returned to the magpies.

One player keen to impress is Eddie Sua, a mountain of a man who plays front row and weighs over 120kg, who in 2011 played for Cabramatta in the Bundy Cup and has previously player for Cronulla at NRL level back in 2007 playing 6 first grade matches. He has also represented Portugal at rugby league at the European World Cup qualifiers. .

Another new recruit is halfback, Nigel Millgate. Originally from Dubbo, he has previously play for Cronulla & Newtown in the NSW Cup but in 2011 played, in of all places, the USA for the New York Knights who were crowned 2011 AMNRL (American National Rugby League) champions and Nigel was crowned Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the AMNRL.

Another interesting recruit is Greg Davis, whose father, Brett Davis, played first grade for the Western Suburbs magpies in 1986-87.

Players from the local junior league have certainly not been neglected and Trevor reports huge interest from local players and confirms a member from Minto's premiership winning A-Grade team from 2011 among the recruits together with a forward in the starting lineup from the successful Western Suburbs SG Ball team from 2011. Other players from wests junior league and Group 6 clubs have also come on board.

The new look magpies will play their first trial against Bundaberg Red Cup 2011 premiers, Cabramatta on Saturday 11 Feb at 6pm at New Era Stadium, Cabramatta. They will then play their second trial on Saturday 18th Feb against Manly NSW Cup side at Brookvale Oval starting at 5.45pm.

Ciriaco "Cherry" Mescia - Happy Birthday today

A big Happy Birthday today from the Western Suburbs Magpies to one of our favourite players in the 90's, Ciriaco Mescia.

"Cherry" , who played as hooker, joined the magpies in 1991 from the Riverina town of Batlow (famous for its apples) after being spotted playing for Riverina in the NSW Country Championships. After biding his time in the magpies lower grades, he made his 1st grade debut in 1994 and was there right up to 1999, playing 90 1st grade matches for the magpies scoring 9 tries. He then played the first 2 seasons for the Wests Tigers before a back injury forced him to retire. Upon retirement, he was involved with the Wests Tigers and then the Sydney Roosters as high performance trainer.

"Cherry" also played Country Origin for 3 straight years and is a life member of the magpies.

Happy birthday champ from all Western Suburbs supporters.

The Passion Within

I have come to the conclusion that queenslanders and wests magpie supporters have one thing in common, the passion for their associated teams. And to make it even more bizarre for me is yes i am a magpies supporter but actually follow the EELS in the NRL. How did this come about you ask ?? Growing up in country NSW my father was an AFL player and followed Collingwood, league in my household growing up was in dribs and drabs on the television as we mostly sat in front of the box on a Saturday arvo watching the then VFL game of the week. I started to get into league at around 7-8 years old and because my dad was a Collingwood supporter as mentioned before so i would look for a namesake & colours in the rugby league code and found the wests magpies. I found my rugby league team and followed the game more intensely since my decision. Over time and during my formative years my heart started to gravitate towards the parramatta eels as i fell in love with the grace and skills of the backline of sterling,Kenny,ella,grothe Cronin etc. From that moment i adopted the eels as my team but still had a soft spot for mighty magpies being my first choice, they say you never forget your first love i could use that analogy in this situation. Around this time i first started to play the game around 10 years old. I cared no longer for AFL (which incidently i never played but fully understood), or soccer which i had played up until that point, rugby league called out to me and i responded with “ I’m coming “ .

When the magpies and Balmain formed the joint venture i had some mixed feelings, yes both teams need to do it in order to survive thanks to super league but felt it was an odd marriage especially with the great geographical divide at the time, yet wests originally being from ashfield was close to Balmain so it made sense in theory from a historical standpoint. Also designing a jumper wouldn’t be that difficult also with both teams sharing black as their colour so no expecting a jumper like jesus’s technicolour dreamcoat. I always saw Balmain as the “ bad boys” of rugby league and had that aura of dislike about them during the 80’s like what Manly has to this day. With players like roach,hardwick,hemsley,elias etc it you could easily see why, they were players you love to hate, wayne pearce & scot gale were notably the exception !!
Even though i follow the eels i have no connection or patriotism towards Wentworthville parramatta’ reserve grade side in NSW cup, i have no connection or patriotism towards West Tigers in NRL as to me they are a “ company ” & moreso a “brand” than a football club ,that is why the eels & bulldogs wanted it so badly at one point in time,even balmain flirted with commercialism naming themselves sydney tigers for a brief period and basing themselves at parramatta. Anyway i follow the magpies because deep down are sentimental to me and are worth fighting for but politics and money seem to ruin everything . Yes crowds and the exposure of the maggies have dropped over they ears but its hard when you have been relegated to what is really “ Park Football” when the rug has been pulled from under your feet now that main gameday fixtures rarely include an open age reserve grade games as a lead up.
During my childhood in the mid 80s when i started to follow the eels my sister ironically started to follow the Balmain tigers , to this day she still follows the wests tigers, i thought she would have come to her senses by now :)

NSW Cup Trial

The Magpies will hit the paddock again in 2012 in a NSW Cup trial at Brookvale Oval for yes... you guessed it... a Fibros v Silvertails match. This will be Trevors first game as a coach and the first real chance he will get to see how his team is preparing for the clubs 105th season.

New coach settles in Leo's sudden replacement

TREVOR Schodel is the new coach of the Western Suburbs Magpies NSW Cup rugby league team.

Just two weeks ago he was saddling up as the St George SG Ball Cup coach again for 2012.

But then he heard the Magpies' coaching job was up for grabs with the previous incumbent Leo Epifania drafted to Balmain as assistant coach of their NSW Cup side in 2012.

"It all happened very fast," the Mackay-born footballer said.

"I applied for the job and got it."
Schodel, a proud Queenslander, was thrilled to be given the chance to coach the Magpies.
"I've only been in the job a little more than a week," the former halfback said.
"The Dragons were very good about it all. I was set to coach there again but I'm here."

Schodel is a former Cronulla, Canberra, Newtown and Wentworthville Magpies halfback who also brings with him years of knowledge playing under many fine coaches. Before coming to Sydney he played with Valleys in the Brisbane competition and the late and great Arthur Beetson, when he coached Cronulla in 1992 and 1993, brought Schodel to Sydney.

"My first coaching role was with Wentworthville under-15s in the Parramatta junior league and we were able to win the competition that year. I was still playing with Wenty at the time," he said.

Schodel sees his NSW Cup role in many different lights. NRL club Wests Tigers have two NSW cups to draw talent from at the Magpies and Balmain.

"There are experienced players and young players on the way up who are playing in the NSW Cup," Schodel said.
"It's an important level of football."

It has not yet been determined by Tigers which players who don't get selected in the NRL top 17 squad for game day either drop back to the Magpies or Balmain NSW Cup squads.
The Magpies' football office is on the ground floor of the Whitlam Leisure Centre and they train at Hillier Oval at Liverpool.

The Magpies' opening game next year is on Saturday, March 3, against Manly at Campbelltown Sportsground at 6pm. They're also chasing more sponsors.

Chronicle - Trevor Schodel joins Western Suburbs Magpies

ALTHOUGH a “shire” resident now, Queensland-born Trevor Schodel developed his passion for rugby league from one of the best in the business.

Tommy Raudonikis (pictured) coached the young Schodel in the Queensland Residents’ team, but his heart was always with the Magpies and he often recounted stories from the old days for the young Queenslanders.

It was that passion that Schodel recalled when he heard the Western Suburbs Magpies coaching job was up for grabs.

“My ears pricked up. It was a chance to coach a NSW Cup team and a foundation club,” he said.

“I also thought of Tommy and his love of the club,” Schodel said.

The future of the Magpies has been precarious at best for several seasons, and Schodel knows he has an uphill battle as the club struggles not just to keep its senior team afloat but also be competitive on the field.

“One guy in rugby league told me I had the hardest job in the world ahead of me,” he said.

“I know it’s a challenge for myself and the players. I’m under no delusions - but our one goal is that we will be competitive.

“I’m not saying we will win the grand final but we will be competitive.”

Schodel already has attracted ex-Cronulla pair Eddie Sua and Nigel Millgate to wear the black and white next season. After a coaching stint in Group 6 several years ago, he recognises the talent in the Country Rugby League competition and said he will keep an eye on players ready to make the transition to the next level.

Supporters View: David Harris

Like his team mate Troy O'Sullivan, the granite like and nuggety David Harris is a whole hearted 80 minute player who never gives an inch. He is typical old fashioned-type workhorse player who alternated between lock and second row during 2011 who is not unlike a very young Les Boyd (circa 1976). He charges into the much bigger opposing forward packs without fear and brings down those same forwards with crunching tackles. David is as tough as they come who shows controlled aggression but never takes a backward step (as Manly halfback Liam Foran found out in their clash at Campbelltown this year). I remember the game against Canterbury at Crest Stadium this year were the magpies lost in the last 90 secs, David was in the thick of the action and suffered a hand injury late in the game but refused to leave the field. He was totally exhausted after the match and like all the magpie players that day, was totally distraught having lost that game. The fact that David was leading the NSW Cup player of the year award up to the final round and then missed the final game through injury ( and he would have been seriosuly injured not to have played ) just about says it all about him. He is also a local magpie having played his junior football at the Campbellown City Kangaroos before having a brief stint the the Canterbury juniors. David should be knocking at the door for selection in the Wests Tigers forward pack in 2012. Let's hope so.

2012 - Western Suburbs Magpies 25 Years at Campbelltown

When the Western Suburbs Magpies run out onto Campbelltown Stadium to do battle in 2012 VB NSW Cup, it will mark 25 years since the magpies made Campbelltown their new home when they took on defending premiers Parramatta on 7th March 1987 at what was then called, Orana Park.

After several court battles to stay in the NSWRL competition starting in 1983, the magpies finally found a permanent place to call home, at Orana Park Campbelltown, leaving behind the wonderful memories of Lidcombe Oval as the club agreed, as did the NSWRL at the time, that the south-west frontier of Macarthur needed to have rugby league team based there full time and it would be the saviour in letting the magpies remain in the competition for the long term (that was the thinking at the time).

For the record, the magpies tore apart the defending premiers to win 32 to 16 with a couple of late tries to the eels making the score a little more respectable from their point of view.

The Wests team that day was captained by current NRL salary cap auditor, Ian Schubert and was coached by current Mounties coach, Steve Ghosn.

The referee was Bill Harrigan and the crowd was a very healthy 10057. The eels won both reserve grade and the u23's.

Whilst the club rejoiced at their first triumph at Campbelltown that year, the rest of the season crumbled to the point were the magpies finished last winning just 5 games ( 4 of them at Campbelltown - Easts 17 to 4, Penrith 16 to 8, Balmain 14 to 10 plus the eels game) and 2 draws ( 4 all against souths at the SCG and 28 all against the sharks at Campbelltown) and Steve Ghosn being replaced as coach for the 1988 season by Laurie Frier.

What may not be as well known is that the magpies played 1 game at Orana Park during the 1986 season against the Arthur Beetson coached Eastern Suburbs roosters. The game, which was actually a roosters home game due the ongoing construction of the SFS, was the round 13 clash on June 14 and was won by the magpies 16 to 14 with the magpies containing a few Englishmen - Lee Crooks (1 try and 2 goals), Deryck Fox and Des Drummond.

Western Suburbs Magpies have appointed former Canberra Raider, Trevor Schodel, as their coach for the 2012 VB NSW Cup season.

Schodel, who was St George SG Ball assistant coach in 2010 and head coach of their SG Ball in 2011, takes over from Leo Epifania, who has joined Paul Fletcher at Balmain Ryde-Eastwood.

2011 PLAYER OF THE YEAR - TROY O'SULLIVAN

Troy O'Sullivan - utility back/hooker - originally from Canberra were he played for the Canberra Raiders Jersey Flegg side before joining Ipswich in the QLD Cup ( where Aaron Sweeney was a team mate). The son of former Canberra Raiders halfback, Chris O'Sullivan.

"I watched all (Magpies) games in 2011 bar 2 and he was one of the gutsiest players every week. Workhorse in defence and dummy half play got better as the season wore on and he NEVER gave up.

I remember him chasing a flying Daniel Mortimer down the sideline after he had made a break and another game against Central Coast at Campbelltown when they scored off an intercept from their own quarter line, Troy chased the bloke to make sure he scored in the corner and not under the posts - needless to say, they missed the conversion.

All heart. Only found out before the presentation he played with a serious knee injury during the second half of the season. He'll be missed. And he's as quite as a mouse.

Just a shame he's going elsewhere next year as he would have been an ideal player to build a team around."

The Western Suburbs Magpies are pleased to announce that Trevor Schodel will be head coach of the VB NSW Cup team in 2012.

Trevor is a former livewire halfback who started his playing career for the famous Valley Diehards in the old Brisbane Competition. He is a former captain of the QLD and Australian U19s side. He was spotted playing for Valleys by the late Arthur Beetson who brought him down to Sydney to play for Cronulla during the early 1990's. From there Trevor joined the Canberra Raiders before ending his playing days in the Metropolitan Cup playing for Newtown, where he captained the Jets to the 1995 title and captained Wentworthville who were runners up in 98 & 99. He was also the winner of the Bill Buckley Medal as Best & Fairest in the Metropolitan Cup in 95 & 98.

His coaching career started mid season with the Newtown Jets in 2003. He has also coached in Group 6 with Moss Vale, in Group 7 with Kiama and was also an assistant with Cronulla in the NSW Cup in previous years and assistant for the NSW Residents.
In 2011, Trevor coached the St George Dragons SG Ball squad to the semi finals.

We wish Trevor all the best for season 2012.

David Harris - Runner Up as NSW Cup Player of the Year

Yet another accolade for David Harris. The Western Suburbs Magpies would like to congratulate our very own David Harris on finishing runner up to North Sydney's Beau Falloon in the 2011 NSW CUP Player of the Year award held tonight at the NSW Leagues Club. David, who is a local Campbelltown junior having played his junior footy at the Campbelltown City Kangaroos, finished on 23 votes just 2 votes behind Falloon. Going into the final round, David was actually leading the voting count but missed the crucial final match through injury whilst the Gold Coast Titans bound Falloon managed to gain the maximum 3 points in the final round for Norths against Wentworthville to take out the award finishing on 25 votes.

Congratulations David on a fantastic season - not only runner up as the NSW Cup player of the year but also named as one of the second rowers in the NSW Cup team of the year and winner of the Magpies Best and Fairest award.

13 NRL teams represented in the VB NSW Cup

13 NRL teams will be represented in the VB NSW Cup in 2012 as St George-Illawarra and Canberra return through joint-venture partnerships with Illawarra and Mounties.
The 2012 season will be a 26 round competition which features a number of new initiatives set to reaffirm the VB NSW Cup as the premier feeder competition to the NRL.

The Newtown Jets will break new ground in 2012 as they leave their spiritual home at Henson Park and take their round 15 fixture against the Windsor Wolves to Pioneer Oval Parkes.

On what is the biggest weekend on the Parkes calendar, celebrations will include the Parkes Picnic Races on Saturday and culminate in this historic VB NSW Cup match on the Sunday.

The VB NSW Cup season will also see two unique rounds where three double headers will be played for individual trophies in a three-pool system. The pools will be the Foundation Challenge (Newtown, North Sydney, Western Suburbs and Balmain Ryde-Eastwood), the Battle of the West (Canterbury-Bankstown, Wentworthville, Mounties and Windsor) and finally, the Battle of the Coast (Newcastle, Cronulla, Manly and Illawarra).

NSWRL General Manager Geoff Carr says off the back of a stellar year in 2011, the VB NSW Cup looks set to only further enhance its position as the premier open-age competition in Australia.
“Around 500,000 viewers tuned into watch a thrilling Grand Final between Canterbury-Bankstown and Auckland last year at ANZ Stadium,” Mr Carr said.

“The success of 2011 season coupled with the support of our new sponsor in VB places the VB NSW Cup in a strong position to strengthen the competition.

“There is an ever expanding appetite for quality Rugby League at suburban venues and with the return of St George-Illawarra and Canberra, this will now expand the VB NSW Cup’s footprint into two of Rugby League’s heartland’s in the south coast and western Sydney.

“With games already being at quintessential suburban grounds such as Leichhardt Oval, Henson Park and North Sydney Oval, it exciting to see the return of defending premiers, Canterbury-Bankstown, to a refurbished Belmore Sports Ground.”

The season is set to start on Saturday, March 3, with the 2012 Grand Final again set down for NRL Grand Final day at ANZ Stadium on Sunday, September 30.

Background of the Magpie Awards

Thought some of you may like to know a little about the 2011 NSW Cup award winners and who the awards are named after. So with the help of the fantastic folk at Wests Archives ( thank you kindly ) below are details of who the awards are named after -

* Bill Carson Award (best local in grade) - former Western Suburbs forward who played for the magpies in the 1958 & 1961 Grand Finals against St George. He played over 100 1st grade games for the magpies. He also represented NSW and Australia against Great Britain in 1962. Upon retirement, Bill had a long career as an administrator at Wests rising to become our club president from 1977 to 1981.

* John Donnelly Award (best import in grade) - Prop forward who joined the magpies in 1975 from the NSW country town of Gunnedah. He was NSW Country Player of the Year in 1973. He played over 100 1st grade games for the magpies between 1975 to 1984 and also represented NSW and Australia. After leaving Wests, he played in the UK with the now defunct Southend Invicta. He was signed by Byron Bay to be their captain/coach for 1986 but died in a drowning incident in early 1986. Much loved and much missed larrikin.

* Alan Ridley Memorial Award (top try scorer) - tall winger who joined the magpies in the early 1930's from Queanbeyan. He was a member of Wests premiership winning team of 1934. Holds the record for most tries in a match for Wests (6) and also most tries in a season (18 which has since been equalled). He also represented NSW and Australia making 2 Kangaroo tours to the UK.

* Bobby Fisher Memorial Award & Jack Ashley Supporters Club Award - both are former members of the Western Suburbs Supporters Club from the Lidcombe Oval days with Jack being the former president.

Now a little about the award winners -

* Bobby Fisher Memorial Award - Aaron Sweeney - front row forward. Aaron is a local magpie junior who was a member of the 2002 SG Ball premiership winning team which included the likes of Liam Fulton, Ryan Hoffman and new eels recruit Ben Roberts. Aaron has also played in the QLD Cup for Ipswich, Burleigh Bears & Central Comets. In 2010 he played for the Windsor Wolves.

* Bill Carson Award (best local in grade) - Gus Aiga - wing/fullback. Played locally with the Campbelltown Warriors amongest others. Also had a brief stint at Cronulla U20's. Other brother Sam has recently played Bundaberg Cup with Cabramatta & Wentworthville.

* John Donnelly Award (best import in grade) - Leivaha Pulu - front row forward - recruited by the Wests Tigers from NZ, he played for Keebra Park High School before playing in Wests Tigers u20s.

* Alan Ridley Memorial Award (top try scorer) - Andrew Everingham - centre/wing - Newcastle junior who played Jersey Flegg and NSW Cup for Manly. Has been at Wests for 3 years. Was very unlucky to have suffered a broken thumb earlier this year just when the Wests Tigers came calling when Chris Lawrence was injured.

* Rookie of the Year - Amanono Tovio - wing/fullback - local junior from Campbelltown Eagles. Has represented Group 6

* Jack Ashley Supporters Club Award - Mitch Achurch - centre/second row/front row - played in the Parramatta juniors with Winston Hills before joining the Balmain junior club, Leichhardt Wanderers and playing in the Wests Tigers U20. He then joined North Qld and played for their feeder club, Mackay Cutters in the QLD Cup.

* Best & Fairest - David Harris - lock/second row - local junior from Campbelltown City Kangaroos. Also played in the Canterbury juniors at East Hills and managed to play for the Bulldogs U20's and briefly for Chester Hill when they were in the Bundaberg Cup.

* Leagues Club PLAYER OF THE YEAR - Troy O'Sullivan - utility back/hooker - originally from Canberra were he played for the raiders Jersey Flegg side before joining Ipswich in the QLD Cup ( where Aaron Sweeney was a team mate). The son of former Canberra Raiders halfback, Chris O'Sullivan.

Wests Magpies 2011 Presentation Night Award Winners

The mighty Western Suburbs Magpies held their 2011 NSW Cup Presentation Night on Saturday 26th Nov at the Wests Sports Club, Croydon. The night was attended by players, coaching staff, club officials, volunteers, sponsors and supporters to say goodbye to a difficult and somewhat frustrating season for although the team missed out on the finals by just one point, everybody associated with the club can hold their heads up high.

The night was not only a presentation for the players but was also to pay homage to a couple of departing magpies - head coach Leo Epifania & jack of all trades, Stephen Reeves. Leo has been associated with the magpies for around 30 years having come up from the junior ranks in the pre Campbelltown days when Wests played out of Lidcombe, playing in the Jersey Flegg & SG Ball rep teams, through to third grade, reserve grade and finally first grade where he made his debut during the 1984 season and after finally hanging up his boots, took on coaching roles at Wests including Jersey Flegg and for the past 4 seasons, NSW State Cup head coach. Stephen has been involved in various volunteer roles at Wests for nearly 10 yrs including managing teams and his most recent role as, but not restricted to, the Western Suburbs Magpies office manager.

After the opening address from Chairman Paul Dillon, the players were handed their jerseys and acknowledgement given to the extremely hard working volunteers, the business part of the evening got under way. The award winners for 2011 are -

The club also acknowledged the achievements of Rocky Trimarchi & Rhys Lenarduzzi for making the Italian World Cup Squad and to Taqele Naiyaravoro who made his international debut for Fiji against the PNG Kumuls and to Jay Maseuli and Taqele for being selected in the Wests Tigers Toyota Cup team during the latter part of the NRL season.

The Rabbitohs clash will see Wests Tigers celebrate the 60th anniversary of the 1952 grand final between Western Suburbs and South Sydney at the SCG as part of the annual NRL Heritage Round. It was the last time Western Suburbs won the first grade premiership.

Campbelltown Sports Stadium will see Wests Tigers tackle fellow western Sydney clubs Penrith and Parramatta in 2 of the 4 matches to be played there.

The round 22 match against the Eels will be the first time Parramatta has played a premiership match against Wests Tigers at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

Wests Tigers will start the season with a home game against Cronulla Sharks at Leichhardt Oval.

The venue will also host 2011 runners-up the Warriors in round 11 and the Melbourne Storm in round 26.

Wests Tigers will tackle big guns Brisbane, Bulldogs and St George-Illawarra Dragons at the Sydney Football Stadium – matches which should again draw huge crowds.

The round 6 game against Brisbane will be played on the evening of Good Friday over the Easter weekend.

LAWRENCE TO PLAY IN FOUR NATIONS FINAL

Wests Tigers centre and Magpies Junior Chris Lawrence says playing in the Four Nations final would be a dream come true.

The Wests Tigers and Australian centre and his team-mate in prop Keith Galloway have played in all 3 pool games and now have their fingers crossed for selection in the Australian side for the Four Nations Final against England at Elland Road, Leeds.

The Final will also be Darren Lockyer's last game but Lawrence admitted that there won't be any fairy tale finishes for one of the game's true legends unless the Aussies are on their game.

"England is dangerous all over the park. They have a great forward pack, young halves and some really dangerous outside backs. They've turned into a side that can not only go up the middle but they can go out wide and score from anywhere. We need to put in a good performance for 80 minutes or they'll get us," he said.

The mind games ahead of Saturday's Four Nations final were cranked up on Thursday with Australia coach Tim Sheens and his England counterpart Steve McNamara naming 21-man squads for the Elland Road decider.

Sheens has included every fit member of his squad for the game, but it's believed Jharal Yow Yeh has the upper hand in the battle for the right-wing spot ahead of Josh Morris.
It is likely to be the only change to the side that started against England in the 36-20 win at Wembley two weeks ago.

Tony Williams is available again following his one-match suspension, and will take his place back on the bench for Darren Lockyer's final game.
Luke Lewis has recovered from illness with Anthony Watmough and Chris Lawrence to overcome shoulder injuries and play.

Willie Tonga and Billy Slater are both unavailable due to injury.
England backrower Gareth Ellis has fully recovered from the back spasm that ruled him out of the win over New Zealand last week and will start.

"Gareth has trained all week very well, and we are very confident he will be fit to play," McNamara said.
The return of Ellis could lead to heartbreak for his Wests Tigers teammate Chris Heighington who could be the man to miss out.

Heighington has been involved in all three of England's games, but was overshadowed by Jon Wilkin's performance against the Kiwis.

Wilkin played the full 80 minutes as Ellis' replacement at the KC Stadium and was very impressive.
Speculation is rife among the English media that he could get the nod to start in the final over Heighington.

Italy are through to the 2013 World Cup after their 19 all draw against Lebanon played in Belgrade, Serbia on 29 Oct. Rhys Lenarduzzi was again on the interchange whilst ex-magpie Ben Falcone scored a try for Italy. Former magpie frontrower Alex Rainieri started the game but left the field injured during the first half. Italy led 18 nil at halftime but Lebanon fought back to snatch the lead 19 to 18 with a field goal with about 4 minutes to go. Then from the kick off, there was a fumble by Lebanon and Italian halfback Ryan Ghietti kicked the equaliser with 2 minutes left on the clock which was enough to get Italy into their first ever Rugby League World Cup with a better for/against then Lebanon.

Marshall Rogers Golf Day ready to tee off

MARSHALL Rogers was a passionate rugby league supporter, and when he wrapped up his Western Suburbs Magpies playing days he kept his passion firing by sharing his knowledge with the next generation of young Magpies.

When Rogers died suddenly in 2007, aged just 50, his grieving family looked for a suitable way to honour him and keep his memory alive.

The annual Marshall Rogers Golf Day, now in its fourth year, raises funds to help educate a talented young player both academically and on the football field. Rogers’ family offers the opportunity through St Gregory’s College, Campbelltown.

“We wanted to keep Dad’s memory alive by helping out young players coming through the ranks, just like he did for the young players he coached,” son Ben Rogers said.

He said the day, scheduled for November 9 this year, was about giving back to the community, but it also took a community effort to pull it off each year.

“We normally have about 120 people attend, which is close to the maximum,” Rogers said.

“though there’s always room for new people and companies.

“St Greg’s came on board to help us out and they’ve been fantastic as has Camden Lakeside golf club.

C91.3 were the first to put their hand up four years ago and their support has been outstanding.”

The four-ball ambrose (18 holes) gets under way with a breakfast at 7.30am. Play starts at 8.30am.

The registration cost includes breakfast, drinks, lunch, golf and entertainment.

Magpies in World Cup Qualifier

A European World Cup Qualifier was played back on 15 Oct involving the Italian team and they beat Russia 92 to 6. Magpie Rhys Lenarduzzi was on the interchange bench but came on and scored at least 1 try. EX- Magpies Alex Rainieri & Ben Falcone ( 2 tries) were in the starting line up. They play Serbia on 23rd Oct and Lebanon on 29 Oct. Rocky Trimarchi didn't play.

They defeated the Sharks, Windsor and Manly, drew with Auckland with a loss to the Bulldogs, who they led until the final minutes of the game. (In the last eight rounds we recorded 5 wins, 1 draw and 2 losses) They certainly finished the year off strongly.

When voting for the NSWRL NSW Cup ‘player of the year’ went behind close doors Josh Davis was leading the votes by 2 points. Good luck Josh.

The team played in the Albion Park Gala Day against Wests Wollongong and Canterbury Bulldogs. Over the Easter weekend, they traveled to Nyngan to compete in a carnival hosted by the Far West Academy. These boys acquitted themselves very well in all games.

Magpie legend Keith Holman Dead

Australian and Magpie Rugby League Legend Keith 'Yappy' Holman passed away last night. He is survived by his wife Hazel. Keith was 84 years of age. A one club man (Western Suburbs Magpies 1948-61), 33 NSW games, 35 Tests/World Cup's for the Australian Kangaroos, Test & Grand Final Referee as well as being a 1st Grade Coach. May one of the Greatest Magpies of all Rest In Peace.

He was only 5 feet 6 inches tall, but Keith Holman was a tenacious rugby league halfback that changed the game.

Born in Ballarat on September 11, 1927, Holman was raised in La Perouse as an orphan and attended De La Salle College in Surry Hills. He played football early in his childhood, but it wasn't until he moved to western NSW at the end of the war that playing football professionally became an option. “I was a cook in the Air Force and at the end of the war I was posted to Dubbo,” Holman said. “I played football with the local CYMS footy and was brought to Sydney by a fella that played for Western Suburbs at the time by the name of Eric Bennett,” he said

Holman was dubbed “Yappy” throughout his career after questioning a referee during a game. “A man named Darcy Lawler said: 'yappy shut your mouth'. I guess it stuck,” Holman said.

Holman's dedication to rugby league saw him play 13 seasons for the Magpies and 32 tests for Australia. But one game stands out. “The highlight was winning the Ashes against England in 1950 for the first time in 32 years,” he said. “It was my first test series.”

Holman continued to pursue his love for rugby league as a coach, referee and selector. “I never had much trouble refereeing,” he said. “If they had've been abusive, they would have been off the field and on the bench.
“There were only a few times I had to run past and tell them to keep their bloody hands down or they'll go. They respected me so after I spoke to them once, they didn't do it again.”

But at the end of a game between Canterbury and Manly at Belmore Oval, Holman and his family had to be accompanied to their car by police.

“I was refereeing the game and I gave a penalty against Canterbury in the last few minutes which made them lose,” he said. “One of the girlfriends's of a Canterbury player waited outside the referee's room for me and was making threats. So my wife, Hazel called the police and we were escorted to the car and through the gates.”

When Holman retired in 1961, his career in rugby league was commemorated with a testimonial day at the Sydney Cricket Ground. While great players are often recognised with testimonial dinners, Holman was the only rugby league player to have ever had a testimonial day.

He was acknowledged during his career for the way he changed the nature of scrumhalf play and the accolades continued long into his retirement.

He was named in several historical teams including both the West Tigers and Western Suburbs Magpies Team of the Century and in the 1970s The Holman JFLFC - a junior Rugby League club was established.
Holman also received a MBE Medal in 1977 and was honoured with an award for his 50 years of continued service to Rugby League in Australia.

In February 2008, he was named in the list of Australia's 100 Greatest Players (1908–2007), which was commissioned by the NRL and ARL to celebrate the code's centenary year in Australia. Seventeen players from the list were placed into the Team of the Century and while Andrew Johns beat Holman for the halfback position, Holman said he was lucky to be included in the top 100. “It's a great honour. Just a great honour to be chosen and named on the list,” he said at the time.

Holman is survived by his wife, Hazel, of 60 years, their three children Christine, Susan and Neale, 8 grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral announcements are expected to be made soon.

Chris Lawrence selected in Kangaroos Four Nation Squad

Magpie junior Chris Lawrence and his Wests Tigers team mates Robbie Farah and Keith Galloway, have been selected in the Kangaroos Four Nations Squad.

Farah, Lawrence and Galloway are part of a 24 man squad named by the Australian Rugby League for the Four Nations tournament in the United Kingdom.

Rising young Wests Tigers prop Aaron Woods was named in the train-on squad but missed final selection. It was a great reward for a superb season, culminating in Woods winning the Wests Tigers Rookie of the Year Award on Friday.

Wests Tigers Head Coach Tim Sheens is the Kangaroos Coach.

Farah and Lawrence played Test matches for Australia at the end of last season.

Galloway’s selection - his first for Australia - comes on top of his superb season for the Wests Tigers which saw him represent NSW for the first time. He was also named the Wests Tigers Forward of the Year on Friday.

Wests Tigers will also be represented in the Four Nations by New Zealand Captain Benji Marshall and by Gareth Ellis and Chris Heighington for England.

Magpie Junior, Matt Groat selected for Young Kangaroos

Wests Tigers players Matt Groat and Jacob Miller have today been selected in the ARL Junior Kangaroos side to play in Newcastle on Sunday, October 16.

The Junior Kangaroos will play the New Zealand Junior Kiwis in Newcastle in the preliminary game to the Australia V New Zealand Test Match at Ausgrid Stadium, Newcastle.

The selection of Groat and Miller in the 18 man squad caps off a fine season with both making their NRL debuts after starting the season in the U20s.

Groat played 10 NRL matches after making his debut against the Dragons at WIN Jubilee Oval in round 12, establishing himself as a young prop with plenty of raw potential.

Miller played 4 NRL matches after making his debut against former club Sydney Roosters at the SFS in round 4.

The talented playmaker was one of the major driving forces in Wests Tigers making the U20s finals. Miller will be pushing hard for the first grade half-back position next season.

Bulldogs win 2011 NSW Cup

A try on the siren by Jonathan Wright has secured the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs their third straight NSW Cup title, triumphing 30 points to 28 over the Auckland Vulcans in the Grand Final at ANZ Stadium.
The Bulldogs led by eight points twice in the second half only to surrender both leads, with a Vulcans try in the 75th minute to Ivan Penehe seeing them hit the lead 28-26.

With their backs to the wall the Bulldogs secured a turnover 25 metres from the Vulcans line with 60 seconds on the clock, and sending the ball from side to side they found Wright, who jinked off his right foot to score the match winner as the siren sounded.

The try secured the result, seeing captain Trent Cutler lifting the NSW Cup trophy for the Club for a third straight year.
It was also a fitting way for Bulldogs Michael Hodgson, Chris Armit, Brad Morrin, Ben Roberts, Michael Lett, Nathan Smith, Gary Warburton and Junior Tia-Kilifi to bring down the curtain on their careers with the Club.

Unbelievably, the Premiership win is the first title ever – senior or junior – for Hodgson, coming on the final day of a career that has seen him play 204 NRL matches across 14 seasons.

The Bulldogs gave their supporters plenty of confidence early, with Cutler twisting his way out of the tackle to score wide out in the second minute after starting the game with a repeat set on the Vulcans line.

However they soon threw the lead away, with a Smith grubber bouncing into the arms of the Vulcans defence in a movement that would eventually end 30 metres from the Dogs line.

At the end of the set Auckland winger Willie Peace touched down off a cross field kick from half Pita Godinet, the try awarded by referee Jon Stone despite replays showing Peace had knocked on in grounding the ball.
Three minutes later another wayward Bulldogs kick resulted in points to the Vulcans, with a Ben Roberts grubber 10 metres out swopped upon by Glen Fisiiahi on his tryline.

Spotting no one home at fullback for the Dogs, Fisiiahi hit the afterburners to score a 100 metre special, leaving Brett Seymour with the easiest of conversions to put the Vulcans out to a 12-4 lead after as many minutes.

The half levelled out from there and despite the Vulcans dominating in terms of field position, the Dogs were the only ones to score in the final 30 minutes of the term as both sides pushed passes in the search for a strike.
In the end it was a relatively simple try, Jonathan Wright standing up the defence on play one from a scrum to race away to score in the 25th minute, reducing the gap to two at 12-10.

The Bulldogs were denied a try just before the break, Bryson Goodwin not getting the same kind of benefit of his opponents when he was ruled to have knocked on over the line in the 39th minute.

However soon after the break the Dogs got their noses back in front off a scintillating Michael Lett break, the winger in turn feeding to Nathan Smith, who handed hooker Joel Romelo a clear run to score under the posts.
Marty Taupau was then denied a clear try when he reached out to score in the corner, only to be denied by the touch judge’s flag despite replays showing he’d remained in the field of play.

It could have proven costly for the Dogs given the events yet to transpire.

Lett was quickly becoming the star of the show for the Dogs, touching down for his side’s fourth try 13 minutes into the half, stretching their lead to 20-12.

But things soured on the hour when he attempted to shadow a grubber kick into touch in goal, allowing Peace to sneak under his guard to score his second and give the Vulcans life at 20-18.

He’d redeem himself with a try 14 minutes from time, in what appeared to all but seal the result for the Minor Premiers.

However the Vulcans came hard at the Bulldogs in the final ten, with Godinet sneaking over from dummy half eight minutes from time to narrow the gap to two points.

The Bulldogs responded by putting the kick off into touch on the full, and at the end of the set Penehe crossed to put the Vulcans back into the lead at 28-26.

Once again it was Lett the focus as the match entered its final minutes, the winger securing a vital turnover with a strip 25 metres from the Vulcans line.

At the end of the play, Wright got his second and the Bulldogs were celebrating their third straight title at NSW Cup level.

The NSW Cup team of 2011 has been announced and it includes local Campbelltown junior David Harris in the second row.

Also an "honourable mention" went to Gus Aiga as one of the wingers and former magpies Nathan Waters as half back and Dean Collis as centre ( note that all are Campbelltown juniors)

Former magpie junior Ben Roberts was five-eighth of the year ( geez, how many local juniors is that, I'm loosing count ).

Finally for coach, Leo Epifania got the "dead-set unlucky" award behind the winner, Richie Blackmore

Italy starts its road to the World Cup with the help of some Magpies

The FIRL, with the recent tour to England by its national A side, has been able to finalise the Azurri side, that will participate in the upcoming 2013 World Cup qualifications.

Captained by Anthony Minichello and Cameran Cirarldo, the Italian Rugby League national side will play in the European tournament where the last two places for the qualification for the 2013 World Cup will be assigned.

Italy will face Russia in Padova on the 15th October with a 15.00 kick off and then move to Belgrade (Serbia) where they will face Serbia on the 23rd October followed by the last game also in Belgrade against Lebanon on the 29th October.

Vice president Fabio Di Pietro, said that "just three years ago when F.I.R.L established the association Italia rugby league, it was unthinkable that Italy would participate in the World cup qualifications, this means that F.I.R.L has worked hard in the last three years, both within Italy and at an international level. The qualification for the 2013 World cup is a prestigious goal, but there is still alot of work to be done to develop rugby league to the highest level within the national territory.

For the qualifications Italy will be able to count on the best available players. The Azzuri team will be made up of players of the caliber of Anthony Minichiello, Cameron Ciraldo, Vic Mauro, Joel Reitmuller, all currently playing in the NRL, and Western Suburbs Magpie Rocky Trimarchi and Craig Gower.

The rest of the team will be made up of the best players originating from the SERIE A RL, who have just recently returned from the tour to England with the Italy A steam.

Daniele Veronese, secretary for the F.I.R.L belives that qualifying for the world cup will bring huge benifits for the development of rugby league in Italy and for the movement itself.

F.IR.L invites everyone to come and see these players of the highest level at Padova at the Plebiscito stadium on the 15th October at 15.00, to support Italy in their quest to qualify for the 2013 World Cup.

No One Supports the Silvertails

Kia ora cuz … any other week of the year that’s 'g’day mate' to you, but admit it - we’re all Kiwis this week. For so many years we’ve scoffed at each other’s accents and told jokes at each other’s expense, but now we’re united against a common enemy, and the old ANZAC spirit is back. Break out the bare feet and serve yourself some fush and chups - it’s a wuckid week to be a Warrior.

Just like any other NRL fan, I knew Manly was on the nose, but I hadn’t realised the depth and intensity of the hatred of the club until this week, when a huge proportion of true-blue NRL supporters from across Australia shifted their support to another country, rather than cheer on one of their own.

Even the Premier of New South Wales, Barry O’Farrell, couldn’t bring himself to support his state’s only remaining team when asked by Ken Sutcliffe live on National Nine News which club he was supporting. Kenny thought it was a no-brainer, but decades of political training kicked in, and the big Lib ducked and weaved like Benji Marshall heading for the try line, rather than be seen by voters to be cheering on the most-loathed team in the league.

In a way Manly brings it on themselves, putting itself in the position of “us against the world” to motivate and inspire them to reach the top. And it works … three grand finals in five years is not a bad achievement.

But Sea Eagles coach Des Hasler is only kidding himself with his claims of underdog status for this weekend. Asked by The Daily Telegraph who should be favourites, the man with the mane replied, “When you look at what they've done and how they are playing, they should definitely be the favourites. But it will be a 50/50 game.” The Warriors have never won the grand final, and just over a week before the big game TAB Sportsbet had Manly at $1.75 to win, and the Warriors at $7.00. Try and spin that Des.

I grew up in New Zealand and I love a true underdog, so it’s an easy choice for me this weekend. Even though I live in Sydney, I’ve been to Auckland many more times than I’ve been to Manly; somehow the Spit Bridge is more of a mental hurdle than the Tasman Sea. And I’m not alone in that. News reports covering the influx of Warriors fans flying into Sydney wondered publicly whether Manly supporters would finally stir themselves to cross the Spit Bridge and make for ANZ Stadium.

There the stage is set for an epic clash: the Warriors peaking at just the right moment, the Sea Eagles determined to lift a big middle finger to the world west of the Spit Bridge. One thing is certain: no matter who wins, the NRL trophy will be heading east, travelling over water to a far-away community that’s simply bursting at the seams with Kiwis.

WESTS TIGERS SEASON ENDS WITH WARRIORS LOSS

Wests Tigers have tonight been eliminated from the Telstra Premiership finals with a 22-20 loss to the Warriors at the Sydney Football Stadium.

In front of a crowd of 27, 109, Wests Tigers led 18-6 at half-time before a try in the 78th minute saw the Warriors take the lead for the first time in the match.

It was a heart-breaking way for the Wests Tigers season to come to an end.

Wests Tigers made the first break of the match in the 2nd minute when centre Chris Lawrence found some open space but his inside pass saw the ball go behind captain Robbie Farah.

After a settling in period, Wests Tigers prop Keith Galloway scored the opening try in the 15th minute by charging over the top of Warriors full-back Kevin Locke to score next to the posts.

Five-eighth Benji Marshall converted the try to give Wests Tigers a 6-0 lead. Bryce Gibbs left the field with a sprained right ankle suffered in the lead up to the try. He left the field for more treatment.

Marshall gave Wests Tigers a 10-0 lead in the 21st minute when he stepped back inside to beat three defenders to score 10 metres out from the posts. Marshall converted his own try for a 12-0 lead after 22 minutes.

The Warriors got on the board in the 27th minute when full-back Kevin Locke scooted out from dummy half to brush off the tackle of Matt Groat before offloading to five-eighth James Maloney to score behind the posts. Maloney converted the try to leave the Warriors trailing 12-6 after 29 minutes.

Gibbs will not return for the rest of the game due to the ankle injury, leaving Wests Tigers with just three on the bench.

Wests Tigers captain and hooker Robbie Farah dived over for a 'Farah special' from dummy half in the 35th minute for a 16-6 lead. Marshall converted the try to give Wests Tigers an 18-6 lead after 37 minutes.

The game was erupted for a minute when adult man streaked across the field before finally being escorted from the field by security.

Marshall attempted a field goal in the 39th minute but the ball was touched in flight and didn't go through the posts. The score remained 18-6 at half-time.

2nd Half
The Warriors enjoyed some good fortune through a try to second-rower Feleti Mateo after he ran onto on a good pass to beat three defenders to score behind the posts. Maloney converted the try to leave the Warriors trailing 18-12 after 51 minutes.

The try came after a forward pass was missed by the referees who then penalised Wests Tigers for raking the ball out in a tackle on winger Manu Vatuvei when replays showed he appeared to have lost the ball.

Two minutes later, Wests Tigers prop Aaron Woods came within a metre of scoring next to the posts.

Marshall extended Wests Tigers lead to 8 points when he converted a penalty goal in the 56th minute for a 20-12 scoreline after Locke was penalised for diving in low on a standing tackle on second-rower Gareth Ellis.

The Warriors got back to 20-16 in the 66th minute when utility Lance Hohaia dived over from dummy half to score next to the posts. Maloney converted the try toleave Wests Tigers leading 20-18 with 12 minutes remaining.

Inu put the Warriors ahead in the 77th minute with a try after a crossfield bomb by half-back Shaun Johnson saw centre Chris Lawrence and winger Lote Tuqiri collide to spill the ball. Inu grabbed the ball and fell short of the line before having a second attempt without a hand on him to score. It was awarded a try on video referee decision.

Maloney missed the conversion attempt to make it 22-20. The Warriors held on to win to advance through to play the Melbourne Storm.

OPEN LETTER TO FANS FROM SIMON DWYER

On the eve of tonight’s qualifying final, injured Wests Tigers injured second rower Simon Dwyer has penned an open letter to supporters.

Dwyer is waiting on surgery to his injured right arm and remains unsure whether the operation will take place in Australia or overseas.

Here is Simon’s letter.
“Whilst the medical opinions I have received are not very encouraging, I’m remaining very positive. I have undergone acupuncture and am still researching all of the doctors all over the world. If it is better for me to have surgery overseas, wherever that may be, we will go there. If not, then I will have the surgery here. Wests Tigers Club Doctor Donald Kuah has been a tremendous help in speaking to specialists who have experience with this kind of injury. All of the medical people I have seen have been very good.

“My team-mates, the coaching staff, and the management at Wests Tigers have been great. Every time I go to training, they want to know what is happening and what the best course of action is. The players have offered to do whatever they can to assist me. Plenty of the boys ring me during the week just to see how I am going. I never really knew how close they were to me until this actually happened. I didn’t know what extent they would go to help me. I feel that all the adversity the club has gone through this year has made the boys tighter as a group. Everyone wants to help each other out. Head Coach Tim Sheens has also been tremendous. He constantly rings me and offers his support. I can’t thank him enough.

“I must admit it was a bit of shock as to how many people actually cared what had happened to me. Every Wests Tigers game I have been too, plenty of fans come up and ask how I’m going. I can’t thank them enough for their support. It has been a real eye opener.

“I’ve started to practise writing with my left hand but the more I practice, the worse I get (laughing). I will just have to keep on trying. Like you all, I will be cheering the boys on very loudly. I know they can do it. I just would like to thank everyone again for their well wishes.”

CHRIS LAWRENCE DECLARES HIMSELF A CERTAIN STARTER

Chris Lawrence may have declared himself a certain starter to line up against the Warriors this Friday night at the Sydney Football Stadium but
Wests Tigers Head Coach Tim Sheens remains optimistic.
Lawrence was named in the team to play St George-Illawarra at ANZ Stadium last Friday night to make his return from a hamstring injury but was a late scratching, resulting in winger Matt Utai moving to the centres.
“I’m playing no matter what,’’ a smiling Lawrence said.
“I was pretty close to playing last week. I worked really hard early in the week and put my body through a lot.
“It wasn’t just my hammy. My body was pretty sore later on in the week, especially Thursday. I had another run but my body was feeling the effects of the tough week.
“The medical staff felt that going into a game fatigued like that was probably not the best preparation so they decided to give me another weekend to freshen up.”

Sheens said Lawrence would be picked in the side but didn’t declare him a certain starter.
“If he finishes his training this week and if he is right, he will play,’’ Sheens stated.
“But he is no certainty. I hope he does think he is a certainty. That would be good if he is but there is no such thing as a certainty in this business.”
Should Lawrence take to the field against the Warriors, it will be just his ninth game after a horror run with injuries, highlighted by a dislocated hip in round 3. Lawrence described his season as ‘frustrating’.
“I get over one thing and I’d be coming through the back end of it and then something else happens. But that’s footy. You have got to cop the good with the bad,’’ Lawrence said.
“Hopefully there can be some light at the end of the tunnel. Potentially, there are only 3 games away from the grand final, so that’s the motivating factor for me at the moment.
“When I first did my hip, I thought that was my season. My first thoughts were basically to try and think about next year.
“I got some pretty good news after the scans and got the chance to come back this year. I got back probably earlier than what I would have thought.
“I felt like everything was going good and it was just a shame I had to come down with another injury to just set me back.
“These things happen and I have worked pretty hard to get myself back and as I said, the motivating factor was playing this time of the year.
“Everyone starts the year wanting to play in semi-final football. I’m just looking forward to getting back on the field.”

Integrated ticketing on major event public transport services will operate
for this Friday night's match between Wests Tigers and St George-Illawarra.
A record-breaking crowd is set to converge on ANZ Stadium for the opening clash of the Telstra Premiership Finals Series.

Already more than 30,000 supporters have snapped up tickets with ANZ Stadium lower bowl seating to be split between Wests Tigers and Dragons fans to showcase the colour and passion of the rival teams.
The record attendance for a Week 1 Finals match in Sydney is 33,315, set last year in the match between the Wests Tigers and Sydney Roosters at the Sydney Football Stadium.
To assist fans travelling to the match on Friday night, all tickets will include entry and travel on public transport to and from the game on CityRail, Sydney Olympic Park Major Event Buses, regular Sydney Buses, Liverpool to Parramatta T-way Buses and Sydney Ferries.

Patrons travelling to ANZ Stadium are encouraged to:
• avoid peak hour traffic by taking advantage of additional express trains and Major Event bus services included in every ticket. Remember to keep tickets for the return trip;

As the finals countdown continues, the NRL today also announced that more than 3,000 volunteers from junior leagues across Sydney will also receive free entry into the Week 1 Sydney matches as a reward for their contribution to the game throughout the year at grassroots level.
The offer is a ‘thank you’ the NRL has generally provided each finals series in Week 3 but with no guarantee of a final at ANZ Stadium in Week 3 it has been moved to Week 1 to ensure volunteers get an opportunity to attend a finals clash.
Already, the NRL has provided for Junior Pass holders to receive free entry into Sydney’s Week One Telstra Premiership Finals at ANZ Stadium and the Sydney Football Stadium.
At ANZ Stadium, Junior Pass holders are to report to any venue box office where they will be presented with a match entry ticket.
At the Sydney Football Stadium, supporters presenting either an NRL Junior Pass or a Manly Next Generation membership card will be granted access via Gate i and seating in Bays 1-6.

In a great joint promotion between ANZ Stadium, Wests Tigers and the NRL, plenty of orange, black and white paint and materials were made available for Members to help turn the stadium into a ‘real home ground advantage’ for the qualifying final clash against St George Illawara on Friday night.

More than 100 Wests Tigers Members registered for the exclusive opportunity after the ideas was first raised on Monday. Members were given just over 3 hours to paint as many banners as they could.

Wests Tigers beat Gold Coast at Campbelltown

Wests Tigers moved to the vital fourth spot on the Telstra Premiership ladder tonight with a resounding 39-10 win over the Gold Coast Titans at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

In front of a crowd of 14, 378, Wests Tigers recorded their seventh straight victory with five-eighth Benji Marshall setting up four tries and scoring one himself. Head Coach Tim Sheens rested Marshall for the final 10 minutes.

Wests Tigers ran in 7 tries to 2.

The win moves Wests Tigers to 32 points equal with the North Queensland Cowboys but into fourth spot on a better points differential (17 points).

Wests Tigers are also now within one win of equalling the club record of 8 for most consecutive wins set on their way to winning the 2005 premiership.

Wests Tigers lost props Bryce Gibbs and Todd Payten through injury. Aaron Woods moved off the interchange bench to replace Gibbs with Ben Murdoch-Masila and Mark Flanagan added to the bench.
The game was just 3 minutes old when five-eighth Benji Marshall scooted out from dummy half to race 20 metres down the blindside before sending centre Matt Utai on a 40 metre run to score next to the posts.
Marshall converted the try for a 6-0 lead.

A superb two man cut out pass by Marshall saw winger Beau Ryan dive over in the right corner to score a brilliant try on the last tackle in the 15th minute for a 10-0 lead. Marshall failed to convert the try from the sideline.

Marshall brought up 800 career points when he got on the end of a break by prop Aaron Woods to race 20 metres acrossfield in a stepping run to score a sensational try next to the posts. Marshall converted the try for a 16-0 lead after 21 minutes.

Video referee Sean Hamsptead was called on in the 28th minute to rule whether Gold Coast five-eighth William Zillman had scored after winger Steve Michaels knocked the ball forward from a crossfield kick that was allowed to bounce by Wests Tigers. It was ruled no try.

Wests Tigers centre Blake Ayshford dived over for a try in the 33rd minute after good lead up work by Marshall and half-back Robert Lui.

Marshall converted the try for a 22-0 lead after 34 minutes.
A minute later, Marshall made a 40 metre break but his inside pass just inches from going over the sideline found Titans second-rower Mark Minichiello 20 metres out from the Gold Coast tryline.

Minichiello opened the Titans account in the 37th minute when he pounced on a grubber kick from Zillman to score in the corner after the Titans got the ball following a loose carry by Wests Tigers full-back Tim Moltzen.
Half-back Preston Campbell's attempt hit the left upright and bounced away to leave Wests Tigers leading 22-4 after 38 minutes.

Wests Tigers left the field to a standing ovation to their 22-4 lead at half-time.

2nd Half

Gold Coast reduced the margin to 22-8 when winger David Mead intercepted a pass from Marshall to race 55 metres untouched to score. Campbell converted the try for a 22-10 scoreline after 49 minutes.
Wests Tigers stretched their lead to 26-10 when winger Lote Tuqiri scored in the left corner in the 61st minute after good lead up work by Utai and Marshall. Marshall failed to convert the try.
A nice step back inside by Moltzen saw him brush past two defenders to score behind the posts in the 66th minute. Marshall converted the try for a 32-10 lead.
Moltzen then popped a short ball for lock Chris Heighington to score near the posts. Utility back Mitch Brown converted the try for a 38-10 lead after 78 minutes.
Hooker Robbie Farah popped a field goal in the final seconds for the 39-10 victory.

The Titans match will also mark the last home game for departing Wests Tigers players Tim Moltzen, Todd Payten, Bryce Gibbs, Andrew Fifita, Wade McKinnon and Mark Flanagan.

NSW Cup Match Review - Round 24 - Wests v Windsor

This game was the Magpies last at home for season 2011. Whilst Head Coach
Leo Epifania was keen to see his team continue their recent good form he knew
the Wolves were desperate for the win which would put them one point outside
the top eight with two rounds remaining in the regular competition.

The Magpies had the early field advantage, but could not get across the visitors
try line, but in the 10th minute Windsor took full advantage after the Magpies
dropped the ball on the last tackle deep in their own half.

After winning the scrum on the Magpies twenty metre line, the Wolves put on
a sweeping back line movement. The ball was passed to fullback Ryan Walker
who ran a perfect line to beat the cover defense to score the first try of the
afternoon. Five eight Blake Austin guided the ball between the posts to put his
team up 6 points to nil.

The Wolves looked menacing when in possession, but scrambling defense from
the Magpies stopped them short of the try line on a number of occasions.

In the 19th minute the Magpies would level the score at the end of an inspired
patch of football. The ball was taken forward by lock forward David Harris who
drew players to him before off loading the ball to center Chris Tuatara-Morrison.
Tuatara-Morrison drifted towards the sideline before flinging a one handed
pass to wing three quarter Amanono Tovio. Tovio then cut back infield before
throwing the perfect dummy on his way to the try line. David Fifita’s conversion
locked the score up at 6 points all.

The remainder of the half would see both teams make a number of unforced
errors, turning the ball over at crucial times. Those at the ground knew that the
side that got their act together would get away with the win.

Midway through the first half, West’s lock forward David Harris injured his leg
before leaving the field. He took no further part in the game.

During the break, Leo Epifania spoke about finishing the season on a good note;
it was just a matter of how much they wanted to win the game.

Windsor made the early running in the second half. After receiving a penalty
close to the Magpies posts, it was a bit of a surprise when they took the option
of kicking for goal after only five minutes of play. Blake Austin’s conversion put
his team ahead by two points, but there was still a long way to go.

The Magpies replied with a solid defensive effort that paid dividends in the 12th
minute when a ball came loose in a jolting tackle. West’s were given the scrum

feed on the Wolves twenty metre line before a couple of settling runs took them
close to the visitors try line. In the next play, prop David Fifita cut from the open
to the blind side before picking out second row forward Leivaha Pulu who hit the
gap perfectly to cross for a well constructed try. Fifita put his team up 12 points
to 8, but it was still anyone’s game.

Within two minutes, West’s were in again. This time it was a long-range effort
from fullback Rhys Lenarduzzi who had supported the ball carriers down the
center of the field. His commitment certainly paid off when the ball came back
to him with the line in sight. Showing a good turn of speed he sprinted away
for a good try. Half Marc Russell made sure of the extra points to increase the
Magpies lead to 18 points to 8.

The Wolves, to their credit, took the game to the home team. Their halves
put in great attacking kicks, which game them several repeat sets. Despite
a fair bit of possession, they were unable to crack the Magpies line. On two
occasions they looked as if they had scored, only for the referee to rule a double
movement and a dropped ball.

The Magpies made sure of the win in the 30th minute when hooker Troy
O’Sullivan scored alongside the posts. It came after Leivaha Pulu off loaded
to Marc Russell who had backed up on the inside. He in turn passed onto a
charging Aaron Sweeney who pushed through a couple of tackles. The play
seemed to end before Sweeney, with players hanging onto him, picked out Troy
O’Sullivan who showed plenty of determination to beat his pursuers to the try
line. Fifita continued his fine kicking display, claiming third goal of the game.

The Magpies have certainly put in a number of strong performances in recent
weeks and hope to take that form with them when they play Auckland Vulcan’s
in round 26 – the last game of the regular season.

NSW Cup Match Report - Rnd 23 - Wests v Cronulla

Wests Magpies were the first on deck for a double header at Henson Park, Newtown. Their opponents were the inform Cronulla Sharks who are in clear 2nd place on the ladder. A number of players, including the experienced Beau Champion were sent back from Melbourne Storm to bolster an already strong team which included Johnny Mannah, Paul Aiton, Stuart Flanagan, Dean Collis and Albert Kelly.

Magpies Captain and second row forward Rocky Trimarchi seems certain to be ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a hand injury during last weeks game against Manly, whilst Taqele Naiyavavaro and Jay Maseuli were called into Wests Tigers NYC 20's team after putting in strong performances in the NSW Cup.

It didn’t take long for the forwards from both camps set the scene for what was to be a good game of old fashioned rugby league where the boys threw everything into their attack and defense. In the 10th minute, Magpies Arthur Little went on a darting run around the edge of the ruck. With space in front of him he put in an attacking kick which was knocked on by a Sharks player. Fortune favoured Arthur who collected the rebound before grounding the ball over the Sharks try line. David Fifita's conversion attempt was waved away. Magpies 4 Sharks 0.

The game remained an arm wrestle with both teams putting their bodies on the line trying to gain the upper hand. This continued until the 36th minute when Magpies centre three quarter Chris Tuatara-Morrison spotted a gap out wide. He threw a great pass to his centre partner Andrew Everingham who drew players to him before returning the ball to Tuatara-Morrison. Quick hands saw the ball taken by fullback Rhys Lenarduzzi who scored his teams second try alongside the posts. With the shade of half time approaching, David Fifita made sure his team would go into the sheds leading 10 points to nil.

The second half was only a few minutes old when the Sharks were caught in possession on the last tackle. A long cut out pass was thrown, but the elusive Amanono Tovio grabbed the ball before giving it to Andrew Everingham who raced away to score his teams third try. With the missed goal, Wests still held a handy 14 points to nil advantage.

The Sharks replied with tries to John Williams and Matt Wright to reduce the Magpies lead to just six points, but in the dying minutes the Magpies received a penalty within kicking range. This time David Fifita made no mistake, increasing the Magpies lead to 16 points to 8.

In the end the Magpies grounded out a fine win against a more fancied team. Head coach Leo Epifania stated he was glad the boys put together two wins in a row after just being beaten in round 21 by the Dogs. He indicated that both of his halves, Marc Russell and Arthur Little had combined well throughout the game.

The second game saw Manly defeat the Jets 24 to 10 in what was a great turn around from their previous weeks outing.

MARSHALL AND PAYTEN TO PLAY 150TH CLUB GAME

Wests Tigers will celebrate two player milestones against Penrith Panthers at Centrebet Stadium this Friday night.

Prop Todd Payten and five-eighth Benji Marshall will each play their 150th game for Wests Tigers.

Payten made his first appearance for Wests Tigers against Brisbane at Campbelltown Stadium in round 3 of the 2004 season. He has scored 9 tries in his 149 games for the Club and has been the cornerstone of the Wests Tigers pack for many years.

Payten will retire at the end of the this season and has played 257 NRL games since making his first grade debut for Canberra against Western Suburbs at Campbelltown Stadium in round 18 of the 1996 season.

Marshall captured the attention of the rugby league world when he made his first grade debut for Wests Tigers against Newcastle at Campbelltown Stadium in round 20 of the 2003 season.

The young Kiwi with the amazing sidestep has since gone on to become an NRL superstar, winning the coveted Golden Boot award in 2010 as the world’s best player.

After overcoming a series of season ending shoulder injuries, the Kiwi Captain has played 21 Tests for his country.

A prolific pointscorer, Marshall has played 149 games for 62 tries, 261 goals and 5 field goals for 775 points.

He is just 12 points off breaking Brett Hodgson’s record of 786 points for most points for the Club.

Hodgson achieved the feat in 102 games, scoring 38 tries and kicking 317 goals.

Marshall also holds the Club record of most tries with 62 in 149 games.

Noel Kelly couldn’t but be full of pride as he enjoyed the celebrations inside the Wests Tigers dressing room at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday night.

One of the proudest and toughest Magpies of them all, Kelly was among some of the Western Suburbs players from the 1961 grand final team that were amongst the well wishers following Wests Tigers win over St George-Illawarra Dragons.

As part of the Club’s tribute to the 1961 team, Wests Tigers players wore the Magpies heritage strip for the match.

Aware how proud Kelly was following the thrilling victory over the Dragons, Wests Tigers second-rower Chris Heighington presented his game worn jersey and shorts to Kelly’s grandson as a memento.
It almost brought the man they called ‘Ned’ Kelly to tears.
The post match celebrations continued well into the night after originally starting at a ’61 Grand Final re-union event at Crowne Plaza, Coogee, organised by Wests Tigers.

It was all part of the Wests Tigers tribute to the Western Suburbs team beaten in the grand final by St George Dragons.

Following a few beverages and plenty of light hearted banter, the Magpies boys travelled to the SFS on a bus to enjoy a function with their grand final opponents.

Prior to the NRL match, players from the ‘61 grand final teams were introduced to the crowd and lined up alongside the Wests Tigers and Dragons teams for the national anthem.

In a great sign of respect, Wests Tigers players, led by Captain Robbie Farah, went along the line and shook every Magpies players hand to acknowledge their achievements.

It was a class act by a classy team.

NSW Cup Match Report - Rnd 22 - Fibros vs Silvertails

Although this was a game involving two Clubs sitting at the wrong end of the competition ladder if previous encounters were anything to go by an entertaining and tough game was on offer.

The Magpies line up was subjected to a bit of a reshuffle with Cassiano Aiga moving from the wing to fullback after the withdrawal of Rhys Lenarduzzi who has succumbed to a nagging injury. Amanono Tovio was called into the squad to take the vacant wing position. David Harris was moved to the interchange bench with Leivaha Pulu coming into the starting line up.

It was a beautiful day at Campbelltown and it did not take Manly long to make the most of the perfect playing conditions. In the 11th minute they received a penalty after putting sustained pressure on the Magpies defense. With good field position the ball was switched from the open to the blind side which caught the Magpies short. Their wing three quarter Michael Chapman showed a good turn of speed to reach the try line before the cover defense got to him. The conversion was waved away. Manly 4 Wests 0.

In the 14th minute, with ball in hand, Wests went on the attack but a jolting tackle forced the ball loose. In the next play, Manly again attacked the blind side which paid immediate dividends when hooker Terrence Seuseu sprinted some 35 metres to score near the posts. Scott Blanch made no mistake with this one, increasing his teams lead to 10 points to 0.

It was about this time when Wests Captain Rocky Trimarchi left the field with an arm injury. His replacement was in the form of David Harris who has been playing well for several weeks.

Manly continued to dominate but the Magpies scrambling defense held them out at the end of a number of promising raids. What could not be defended was the Manlys next try. It came after their fullback Scott Blanch showed a clean pair of heels, sprinting deep into Magpie territory. He put in a kick which landed mid field, close to the Magpies try line. After collecting the ball, it was passed to a support player, who slipped over allowing the ball to roll into his own in goal area. Scott Blanch, who had followed his kick, simply dived onto the loose ball. His conversion insured his team held a handy 16 points to 0 lead after only 21 minutes of play. It was obvious that Wests needed to score before half time whilst preventing more points coming from the opposition. Around the 30 minute mark the momentum swung towards the Magpies who started to display the type of football they put on the previous week.

The Magpies set up play on the visitors 20 metre line after Manly were penalised for an an infringement in the play the ball. The hit up was taken by Soni Passa, who made good ground before off loading to his front row partner David Fifita. Fifita carried the ball and several defenders with him close to the try line before off loading, one handed to five eight Marc Russell who scored alongside the posts. Fifita kicked the goal to reduce Manlys lead to just 10 points.

Within minutes Wests were in the thick of it again. Centre three quarter Taqele Naiyavavoro and prop forward Soni Passa charged head on into the opposition. This was followed by lock forward Josh Davis who picked out Amanono Tovio who had backed up the big fellow. Tovio weaved his way through Manlys defense before he threw a flat pass to Andrew Everingham who sprinted to the corner for an inspirational try. Fifita's conversion attempt faded away at the last minute. Manly 16 Wests 10.

Wests third try came in the 37th minute. On the back of a penalty, Wests forwards carried the ball to Manlys 15 metre line. After feigning to pass the ball to the open side, a clever pass was delivered to Taqele Naiyavavoro who used his strength to burrow his way over the line for a great individual try. Fifita took the two points to level the score at 16 points all.

In the 40th minute, Wests received another penalty adjacent to Manlys goal posts. With time running out, a decision was taken to go for the two points. Fifita did not let his mates down when he put his side in front for the first time 18 points to 16.

During the break, Wests Magpies head coach Leo Epifania stressed the need for the team to attack around the play the ball area before giving their backs a go at the opposition. He also spoke of the teams courage after coming back from 16 points down.

The early exchanges in the second half were dominated by very solid defense, with both teams trying to gain the upper hand. In the 9th minute, Wests second row forward Leivaha Pulu called for the ball close to Manlys try line. With defenders all around him he took the option of kicking the ball along the ground into Manlys in goal area. His second row partner David Harris followed the kick through before diving on the ball to claim the try. Fifita continued his fine kicking display to take his team further into the lead 24 points to 16.

Play settled with Manly putting on several attacking raids, but the Magpies drew on their reserves to hold them out. In the 30th minute, Wests five eight Marc Russell followed Leivaha Pulu's earlier example by rolling the ball into Manlys in goal area. Unfortunately for the visitors, they knocked the ball on which allowed Marc Russell to score his teams fifth try. Fifitas conversion attempt hit the post, but Wests still held a handy 28 to 16 lead.

With all the running, Wests were soon over for another try. In the 35th minute, Manly were trying to run the ball out from inside their own thirty metre area when one of their passes was intercepted by Wests second row forward Leivaha Pulu. Pulu then ran untouched to the tryline. Fifitas conversion put the boys in black and white into a match winning lead 34 to 16.

With time running out, Manly put in a chip kick which rolled in touch on the Magpies 40 metre line. After winning the scrum, the ball was passed to Taqele Naiyavavoro who sprinted some 55 metres down the touch line to score his second try of the day. Not to be outdone, Fifita kicked a fine goal from the touchline. The final scoreline read Wests Magpies 40 Manly 16. On another note it was pleasing to see Dayne Craig take the field in the second half after a long lay off due to a knee injury.

WESTS BEAT DRAGONS 16-14 IN THRILLER AT SFS

Wests Tigers recorded a gutsy come from behind victory to beat premiers St George Illawarra Dragons 16-14 at the Sydney Football Stadium tonight.

The win was Wests Tigers' fourth consecutive victory and moves the team into seventh place on the Telstra Premiership for the time being.

It was the second straight week Wests Tigers have come from behind to record victory against quality sides Manly and St George-Illawarra.

The match also marked 150th game in the NRL for prop Bryce Gibbs and full-back Wade McKinnon and the 100th Wests Tigers game for prop Keith Galloway.

The opening minutes saw both sides start with plenty of intensity. Emotions overflowed when Benji Marshall was dumped by second-rower Beau Scott after offloading, resulting in a fight.

Marshall failed to convert a penalty goal from 20 metres out in the fourth minute.

Two minutes later, centre Chris Lawrence had the ball knocked out of his grasp as he attempted to score in the left corner.

Wests Tigers continued to muscle up in defence and had some good attacking raids but to no prevail midway through the opening half.

A good tryscoring opportunity went begging in the 28th minute when full-back Tim Moltzen had centre Blake Ayshford and winger Matt Utai in support but lost the ball close to the line.

Moltzen forced the ball dead in the 37th minute when an attacking raid down the left flank by Dragons centre Matt Cooper saw winger Brett Morris put a chip kick over the top for Moltzen to knock it over the dead ball line, forcing a goal line drop out.

Wests Tigers were penalised in the ensuring set when Todd Payten was caught lifting Trent Merrin in a tackle. Five-eighth Jamie Soward converted from 30 metres out to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead after 39 minutes and into half-time.

2nd Half
A Soward bomb in the 47th minute was spilt by Moltzen and into the arms of Dean Young who offloaded to full-back Darius Boyd to score near the posts. Soward converted the try for an 8-0 lead.

Wests Tigers took advantage of a fumble in-goal by Morris when in the ensuring set from a drop out, a crossfield bomb by Robbie Farah saw second-rower Liam Fulton catch the ball to score next to the posts. Marshall converted the try for an 8-6 scoreline with 17 minutes remaining.

Three minutes later, Marshall scored under the posts from a 65 metre break that saw the ball travel through the hands of Marshall, Lawrence and winger Beau Ryan who then sent Marshall on a 25 metre run to score for a 10-8 lead. Marshall converted the try to give Wests Tigers a 12-8 lead.

A cut out pass by Boyd saw Morris dive over in the left corner to score in the 71st minute to level the scores at 12-12

With Soward off the field through injury, captain Ben Hornby converted the try from the sideline to give the Dragons a 14-12 lead after 73 minutes.

Wests Tigers regained the lead in the 75th minute when Marshall gave a cut out pass for Lawrence to race 25 metres down the left flank before giving an inside pass to Ryan to race away to score near the posts for a 16-14 lead.

Marshall failed to convert the conversion attempt with 4 minutes remaining.

The Dragons then got three consecutive scrums inside the final two minutes and in between tempers flaring from a loose ball kicked dead to a scrum almost erupting, Wests Tigers dug deep down to the final seconds to record one of their gutsiest wins of the season.

MAGPIES LEGENDS RECALL 1961 GRAND FINAL

It might be 50 years since the 1961 Grand Final decider but Noel Kelly and Arthur Summons can clearly recall the great battles between Western Suburbs Magpies and St George Dragons.

Wests Tigers will commemorate the 1961 Grand Final, won 22-0 by the Dragons, at the Sydney Football Stadium this Friday, August 5, as part of its pre-match entertainment for the clash against St George-Illawarra Dragons.

The Magpies and the Dragons were the two best sides of 1961 after the preliminary rounds as equal leaders.

Western Suburbs claimed all but the first grade premiership in 1961, winning the reserve grade and third grade titles as well as the club championship for the second straight year.

Kelly and Summons spoke to weststigers.com.au this week about the ’61 Grand Final and recalled some of their great memories.

Wests Tigers will wear a commemorative Wests Magpies heritage strip for the game.

NOEL
We won everything in ’61 but the first grade title. Jack Fitzgerald was the coach but you will find that Harry Wells, Kel O’Shea, Nev ‘Boxhead’ Charlton and Mark Patch were all about to retire. I had a crook knee and it was my first year after coming down from Qld.

ARTHUR
It was my second year at Wests. I couldn’t make first grade because I kept losing the ball.

NOEL
He couldn’t feed the scrum (laughing).

ARTHUR
I never improved either (laughing)…’61 was a pretty hard year for me because I was re-learning the game after going to rugby union. I played league as a kid. In rugby, as soon as you hit the ground you let the ball go because they would ruck over you.I was pretty ordinary at retaining the ball when I came back. I had to improve in ‘61 or they wouldn’t have put me in any side. They swapped Keith Holman from half to five-eighth in ’61. I can’t believe its 50 years already.

NOEL
The older you get, the quicker it goes too Arthur.

ARTHUR
Noel told me once after losing a series of scrums to Souths hooker Freddie Anderson that I was the worst half-back he had ever seen. I had to agree with him (laughing). I didn’t know where to put the ball in.

NOEL
I forgot to tell you one thing, Arthur. Hookers are never responsible for the ball unless they win it. I would blame the prop and then blame the bloody half-back.

ARTHUR
I’ll admit we got beaten fairly solidly in the ’61 grand final. They were the better side and it was the same in ’62. We should have beaten Saints in the 1963 grand final though in the mud. We had beaten them in the two rounds, beaten them in the semis, and went straight to the grand final. They were lucky to beat Balmain in the final.

NOEL
I thought the mud was very good for my complexion.

ARTHUR
You didn’t want to get any scratches from that Bulli soil. You would have had an infection for bloody months. I was worried about getting bogged because of my short legs.

NOEL
You wouldn’t have found him either!

Magpie Steve Georgallis joins the Wests Tigers

Tonight Steve Georgallis has informed the Penrith Panthers he has accepted a role as assistant coach with the Wests Tigers for the 2012 season.

Panthers General Manager Phil Gould said "Steve has informed us he will be moving on next season. On behalf of the Panthers Board of Directors and I am sure all Panthers fans we would like to sincerely thank Steve for his contribution to the club and congratulate him on his appointment".

"Personally I am glad he has decided to stay in the NRL rather than accept opportunities overseas. I know he will learn alot working with a great coach like Tim Sheens in the meantime we know Steve will continue with his best efforts to qualify the Panthers for the top finals series this season".

Georgallis made his debut with the Roosters in 1989 playing halfback.^[1] Over the 4 seasons with the club he had spells playing at five-eighth, fullback and centre without being able to cement a position, making only 38 appearances.

Joining the Magpies in 1993, he proved just as adaptable, and was a cornerstone of the team for 7 seasons, playing in 148 games.^[1] During this time he also spent an off-season in England playing for Wakefield Trinity. By 1999, Georgallis had started making appearances at lock, and was captaining the struggling Magpies. He played a season mostly from the bench for the Wests Tigers after the merger with Balmain. He was cheered from the field at the completion of his last Australian game.^[2]

In 2001, Georgallis joined the Warrington Wolves for a season. Wolves' coach Darryl Van de Velde said at the time, "He knows what Rugby League's all about. He is very strong, has good hands and is always busy on the field."^[2] Unfortunately, Georgallis only lasted 6 games before the end of his professional career, though he did make later appearances as captain of Greece.

Prop Bryce Gibbs will play his 150th club/career game in the NRL after making his debut against Penrith at Penrith Football Stadium in round 24 of the 2003 season.

Full-back Wade McKinnon has been named on a five man interchange bench and should he make the final 17, will play his 150th career game in the NRL following previous stints at Souths, Parramatta and the Warriors.

Prop Keith Galloway will play his 100th game for Wests Tigers after joining the Club from Cronulla Sharks for the 2006 season.

Wests Tigers will commemorate the 1961 Grand Final at the Sydney Football Stadium on Friday, August 5, as part of its pre-match entertainment for the clash against St George-Illawarra Dragons.

The 1961 Grand Final saw St George Dragons beat Western Suburbs Magpies 22-0. Earlier, the Dragons beat the Magpies 9-4 in the major semi-final.

Wests then beat Balmain Tigers 7-5 in a tough final to set up the premiership decider with the Dragons.
The two best sides of 1961 fought out the grand final after both teams finished equal leaders on 30 competition points after the preliminary rounds.

The Magpies claimed all but the first grade premiership in 1961, winning the reserve grade and third grade titles as well as the club championship for the second straight year.

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 61 Grand Final, players from the St George and Western Suburbs teams will be paraded around the ground prior to the NRL blockbuster between Wests Tigers and St George Illawarra.

It promises to be a great night of rugby league, celebrating the past and present.

Match Review - NSW Cup - Rnd 21 Wests v Bulldogs

Some may have thought this game would be a cake walk for the Dogs who are sitting alone in first place after a string of strong performances. They fielded a very strong team with most having first grade experience whilst another had represented Australia. They deserved to be favourites, pretty daunting, yes but those who prepared the boys were confident they could cause a major upset, and they almost did.

The Magpies pressured the Bulldogs try line for almost fifteen minutes, but the home team held firm. When given the ball in the 16th minute they charged down field. The Dogs prop forward Mickey Paea ran the ball up on the last tackle but he was held up over the try line. The ball came loose, but the Magpies were penalised for a strip in goal. The Dogs took a quick tap before using their big forwards to pepper the try line. The Magpies scrambled to hold out the Dogs, but Mickey Paea, running at an angle, barged his way in for a four pointer. Bryson Goodwin's conversion put the Dogs up 6 points to 0.

The momentum of the game swung from one team to the other, with very strong defence being the highlight. In the 28th minute, after receiving a penalty close to the Dogs try line, Wests second row forward Josh Davis switched the point of attack from the open to the blind side, wrong footing the defence. He appeared to be held before slipping a great pass to his mate, five eight Marc Russell who crossed for a well rehearsed try. David Fifita's extras put them back on even terms with the Dogs, 6 points all.

In the closing minutes of the half, the Dogs put on another try after they feigned to kick on the last tackle. The ball was passed along their backline to wing three quarter Junior Tia Kilfi who crossed untouched in the corner. The conversion was waved away. Dogs 10 Magpies 6. This try came against the run of play and certainly showed how dangerous the Dogs are.

The Magpies re started play with seconds left on the clock. The ball was kicked deep, but a Dogs player knocked the ball forward. It bounced to interchange player Chris Tuatata-Morrison who had chased the kick hard. He drew three players to him before throwing a miracle pass behind his back to centre three quarter Andrew Everingham who outpaced the defence to the try line. The hooter sounded as the conversion attempt was waved away.

The second half got under way in similar terms as the first half. Both teams were trying to crack the opposition and gain the ascendancy. In the tenth minute a clean break was made by Wests second row forward Leivaha Pulu. He sprinted some 25 metres before off loading to centre three quarter Taqele Naiyaravoro who continued the charge deep into the Dogs territory. A quick play the ball followed before Andrew Everingham crossed in the corner for his second try. The conversion from David Fifita was worth the admission fee. With the wind blowing, and from an acute angle, he guided the ball over the black dot to put his side in front 16 points to 10.

The Magpies continue to play their best football of the year and went close to scoring on a couple of occasions. They received a penalty in front of the Dogs uprights and David Fifita made no mistake claiming the two points. Magpies 18 Dogs 10.

The score line remained unchanged until the 36th minute when luck deserted the boys in black and white. A pass went to ground near the Magpies forty metre line. It was picked up by a Dogs player before he ran down the side line to score his teams third try of the afternoon. Bryson Goodwin made good with his kick, reducing the Magpies lead to just two points.

Both sets of supporters were on the edge of their seats, urging their team on - could the Magpies hold on or would the Dogs come from behind in the dying seconds and ruin the day. Unfortunately for the Magpies, the latter happened. After receiving the ball from the kick off, the Dogs made good metres deep into the Magpies territory. Throwing caution to the wind, the Dogs threw the ball around, eventually finding a gap in the Magpies defence to score the match winning try. Goodwin ensured the victory by kicking the goal. Dogs 22 Magpies 18.

Whilst the Magpies were unlucky, the Dogs hung in there until the end, eventually claiming the win. All associated with the Club can certainly be proud of the boys performance. They tried hard all day and in the end a couple of errors proved to be the difference. With only a few games remaining in the regular season the form shown by the Magpies in this game will certainly cause the opposition teams to be cautious when they take the field.

RIP Denis Meaney

The Wests Magpies is currently mourning the death of former player Denis Meaney, who passed away suddenly but peacefully at Lismore Base Hospital on Monday 25 July, aged 74.

Denis played a total of 132 first-grade matches with Wests in his seven seasons with the Club and this included two Grand Final appearances in 1962 and 1963.

He was a tough no-nonsense prop on the field, but a true gentleman off it. Born in Manly, Denis made his first grade debut with the Sea Eagles in 1957 and played in their Grand Final loss to St.George that year.

He picked up his first top grade try at Brookvale against Wests on 1 June, 1957 in the 21-15 victory. While with Manly, Denis represented NSW Colts against Great Britain in 1958 and in 1959 and he also played in a Possibles versus Probables match, which was a trial game for selection in the Kangaroo touring party of that year. After three seasons and 41 top grade matches for Manly, he joined Wests in 1960.

During his time with Wests, Denis played in the 1962 and 1963 Grand Finals, against St.George. Both of these matches were tight affairs with the Saints winning 9-6 in 1962 and 8-3 in 1963. Including his three Grand Finals, Denis played in 13 end-of-season play-off games. At the end of the 1960 regular season, Wests were locked together with Easts, Balmain and Canterbury in equal second place. Only three of these four Clubs could move into the semi finals with St.George and so extra qualifying games had to be played midweek. Balmain was the team to miss out and on 9 August 1960 at the Sports Ground, Denis scored two good tries for the Magpies in their 28-10 defeat of the Tigers. The following year, Denis represented City Firsts against Country at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

After his playing career had ended, Denis and his wife Barbara went into the hotel business in Gunnedah. Their next move was to Lennox Head where they ran a motel. Denis began coaching Lismore Marist Brothers in 1985 while at Lennox Head and the next year he took the team to the Premiership. In 1987, with Denis still coaching, Brothers were unbeaten in winning the Premiership and were rewarded with the Clayton Cup, which is awarded to the best performed team in Country Rugby League competitions.

A few years later, Denis became a director of the Ballina Seagulls Rugby League Club and in 2010, Ballina and Marist Brothers honoured him with the introduction of the Denis Meaney Shield, which is played annually between the two Clubs.

Denis was a Country Rugby League selector for 17 years and a former NSW Residents selector. He also worked to help form the Northern Rivers Branch of the Men of League.

Denis' great mate, Noel Kelly, while at the recent Denis Meaney Shield day in Ballina, said "He was a big, blond bombshell, who was too nice to be a front rower. I'd be knocking blokes to the ground and Denis would go over and help them back to their feet."

Chairman of Wests Magpies, Paul Dillon added, “Wests Magpies lament the passing of former great player Denis Meaney, a gentlemen who epitomised the Magpie spirit on and off the field. Denis was as tough as any man that pulled on the famous black and white jumper and he will be remembered with great affection by those who knew him and those who saw him play. Wherever there are ‘clouds of dust and buckets of blood' Denis will be there in spirit. Wests Magpies football Club extends its condolences to his wife Barbara and their children Shane, Damon and Tiffany.”

Wests Tigers Rugby League Club will pay their respects to Denis and his family by wearing black arm bands on Friday 5 August for their match v St George Illawarra at the Sydney Football Stadium.
