Help the Magpies get back on the Tele

The 1996 Magpies are in the running to be shown on Fox Sports this Tuesday.

The match that garners the biggest vote will go to air the following night, Chooseday Night.

It sounds simple because it is.

This week, the theme is Week One Finals.

This week's most popular game will go to air on Tuesday September 4 at 10pm (EST) on Fox Sports 2HD and Fox Sports 2.

The Games:

3rd Qualifying Final, 1995 Bulldogs v Dragons: Both clubs overcame numerous off-field dramas to reach the finals. Three players were sin binned during a physical and tense clash that was still up for grabs when an 80th minute bomb was launched.

1st Qualifying Final, 1996 Sharks v Magpies: Wests snuck into the top 8 after Cronulla beat Newcastle in the final round of the regular season. However, the Sharks were now the enemy of the underdogs in this gripping battle of survival.

4th Qualifying Final, 2006 Knights v Sea Eagles: A controversial round 23 match raised the stakes for this finals encounter. Could former Newcastle hero Ben Kennedy inspire Manly and end the season of his old team-mates?

So come on and vote for the Magpies here... www.foxsports.com.au/league/chooseday-night

This is it! The Magpies last chance to get a win in 2012. The boys must be commended for never giving up in what can be described as one, if not the hardest season our proud club has ever had to endure.

They really could use your help out at Leichhardt Oval this Saturday. Get out to the game and cheer on our boys. Its David vs Goliath, and our boys are sure to give the competition one last almighty black and white shake!

Summary: In terms of finals the Tigers are in an ideal situation in that they control their own destiny. They must simply win and they will secure their place for week one of the Finals Series. The Tigers can’t finish higher than sixth no matter what happens in other fixtures, so they will know that they face an elimination matchup in week one regardless of the margin of victory and so forth. A major focus for Paul Fletcher and his men, other than securing the points, should be to get through the game without losing any players to injury or suspension. This will be easier said than done however given the fierceness that this encounter will be expected to produce. It is no secret that there is no love lost between these two clubs and fireworks are to be expected, so it will be important for the Tigers players to keep their wits about themselves and just play football. Wests will throw everything at the Tigers, and with this game set to be part of a three match card at Leichhardt on Saturday, the prospect of a good early crowd will only serve to fire the black and whites up even more.
Talking Point: Well done boys – It sounds silly to say this about a side that is staring down the barrel of a winless season, but we think that Wests have done a mighty job in 2012. We don’t want to make excuses for anyone but this club has had to go through a coaching change, personnel turnover both on and off the park, prepare with limited resources and have received limited support from those that perhaps they would have been expecting such support from. To keep turning up week after week, almost knowing their fate prior to the starting whistle must be an exacerbating exercise yet these men have continued to do, and do it with their heads held high. While they have been outgunned they have never given up, and we are sure that the pride of Campbelltown is still just that. Now rip in and finish the year on a high boys!
Prediction: Plenty of feeling in this one but the Tigers will win and seal their spot in the finals. Tigers by 18.

Match Report - Round 25 VB NSW Cup - Western Suburbs v Mounties

On a glorious saturday afternoon, the Western Suburbs Magpies played their final home game of the 2012 VB NSW Cup season against a Mounties outfit who were desperate to stay alive in the race for the finals. The Magpies pushed Mounties in the first half and at the 39 minute mark only trailed 14-10 but errors and a loss of concerntration allowed Mounties to score within 1 minute either side of half time and then raced away in the second half to win comfortably 64-22.

The day did not start well for Wests when they spilt the ball within the first set of six from the kick off. From the resulting scrum win, Mounties worked the ball towards Wests tryline and fullback Dimitri Pelo slid through the defence from 10m out to score after just 90 seconds of play. Scott Jones missed the conversion and Mounties were up 4-0.

Wests regrouped and after receiving consecutive penalties, were able to work the ball upfield and scored at the 8 minute mark when Keanu Rogers who played for Wests SG Ball last season scored in the corner. Trent Touma converted from the sideline and Wests were in the lead 6-4.

Wests then gifted Mounties a penalty on their own 40m line and Mounties had no trouble in scoring at the 12 minute mark when young Raiders forward Mark Ioane crashed over close to the line. Scott Jones converted the try for Mounties to regain the lead 10-6.

Wests however were not going to go away and scored at the 19 minute mark when winger Greg Davis scored in the corner after a clever kick from Zoram Watene behind the Mounties defence was regathered by Davis. Touma missed the conversion and the scores were locked at 10-all.

Mounties then scored at the 23rd minute mark when a kick by Canberra Raider, Michael Picker to the corner was allowed to bounce ingoal and Haydon Hodge dived on the loose ball to score. Jones missed with the conversion and it was Mounties in front 14-10.

Wests were certainly taking it to Mounties with some big hits by Henry Iuta and Seffa Silafau whilst the rest of the forward pack defending very well. Wests went close to scoring on the back of a Nigel Millgate 40/20 at the 28 minute mark but were unable to capitalise going within centimetres of scoring.

Then an error with less then a minute to go in the first half undid the great work Wests had done in the first half. After winning a scrum on their 10m line, a low pass to the first receiver was knocked on and from the resulting scrum win, Mounties scored when Adam Tangata crashed over close to the line. Jones added the extras for a halftime score of 20-10 to Mounties.

At 20-10, Wests were certainly not out of the game and just needed to iron out the amount of errors creeping into their game.

However, before some of the crowd had time to resume their seats from the halftime break, Mounties scored on just the second tackle from the kick off. Travis Waddell was able to bounce off a tackle and offload to centre Sami Sauiluma who raced 60m along the sideline to score. Jones converted and it was 26-10 which meant Mounties had scored 12 points less then one minute either side of halftime.

Mounties extended their lead at the 45 minute mark when Jarred Kennedy ran onto a short pass to break the defensive line 15m out from the Wests line and popped up a pass for Petro to score his second try for the afternoon. Jones added the extras and it was now 32-10.

With Wests attacking within the Mounties 20m zone, Mounties centre Sami Sauiluma intercepted a pass to race 80m to score at the 49 minute mark but not after a valiant chase from front rower Seffa Silafau who chased right to the end to make sure Sauiluma score in the corner. Jones missed the conversion attempt but Mounties now led 36-10.

Wests were not about to give up and scored at the 53rd minute mark when Trent Touma put a kick up for his winger into the ingoal and in the scramble for the ball, it was Touma who was able to dive on the loose ball. Touma then nailed the conversion from out wide for a 36-16 scoreline.

Mounties then dispelled any thoughts of a Wests comeback when Mark Ioane scored his second try of the day at the 60 minute mark when he simply crashed over close to the line. Halfback Darren Nicholls took over the goalkicking duties and duly added the extras for a 42-16 scoreline.

Mounties added further tries at the 61st and 64th minute mark to Jarred Kennedy and Eddie El-Zbaidieh which were both converted by Nicholls for Mounties to lead 54-16 before Wests scored at the 69 minute mark when former Campbelltown Eagles player, Amanono Tovio scored from a Nigel Millgate grudder kick into the ingoal which Mounties failed to cleanup. Touma added the extras for a 54-22 scoreline.

Mounties added further tries at the 75th and 78th minute to Jarred Kennedy and Hayden Hodge, who ran at 3/4 pace to the tryline after taking an intercept on halfway for a final score of Mounties 64 Wests 22.

For Wests, they certainly had their chances in the first half but fell away in the second half with crucial errors proving costly. Seffa Silafau was in the thick of the action in both attack and defence. Michael Lekkas has certainly enjoyed the move to the back row with his game improving immensely since moving out of the centre position. Jay Maseuli was always charging into the opposition pack whilst Henry Godinet added some spark around the rucks in both attack and defence when coming on from the interchange bench. Big Henry Iuta again made same massive hits in defence and some nice offloads but also showed he has more to his armoury with some great runs playing in the centres. Henry is a Minto boy and grew up with Jarryd Hayne and Krisnan Inu with many local observers stating he was just as, if not more talented then those two - WOW.

For Mounties, Paul Vaughan was the standout in the forwards. Although playing in the front row, he has some pace and ran more like a back rower constantly busting the Wests defence on the fringe of the rucks. Mark Ioane, Scott Jones and Jarred Kennedy also played very well in the Mounties forward pack whilst Travis Waddell created opportunies from dummy half. Canberra Raiders player, Michael Picker was put into the five-eighth role and together with Darren Nicholls, directed the side around the park very well whilst centre Sami Sauliuma and fullback Dimitri Pelo also had outstanding games.

The Magpies play Balmain/Ryde-Eastwood at Leichhardt Oval next saturday in the final round of the NSW Cup.

Mounties 64 (Pelo 2, Ioane 2, Kennedy 2, Sauiluma 2, Hodge 2, Tangata, E El-Zbaidieh tries: Jones 4, Nicholls 4 goals) def Wests 22 (Rogers, Davis, Touma, Tovio tries: Touma 3 goals).

VB NSW CUP to be shown LIVE on Fox Sports

The Magpies welcome the move that will see NSW Cup games broadcast live on FOX Sports. after the Australian Rugby League Commission announced a five-year broadcasting agreement with Nine and Fox Sports that will invest more than $1billion in the future of the code.

The largest agreement in Rugby League’s history delivers national television exposure across all games, advanced scheduling, increased programming, key broadcast innovations and leaves the Commission free to pursue further significant broadcasting revenues in New Zealand and through mobile and other on-line properties.

Both Fox Sports and Nine have committed to ensuring that viewers across the country will experience new technologies that bring NRL fans closer to the game than ever before.

“The whole package is a simply fantastic result for Rugby League,” Australian Rugby League Commission Chairman, Mr John Grant, said after signing a formal heads of agreement this morning.

“The cash that comes from the agreement, used wisely, will provide the funding base for sustainably growing our game from the grass-roots to the elite levels.

“The agreement around scheduling answers the request from our clubs and corporate partners for certainty and the inclusion of national coverage will see our fans across Australia able to enjoy their Rugby League.

“Of great importance, and a factor that played heavily into the Commission’s final decision, is the release by News, Fox and Nine of their rights over future ‘first and last’ agreements.

“It reflects the positive spirit of the negotiation process and allows the game greater control in determining the value of its assets in the future.”

The agreement was signed this morning following several days of intense negotiations with representatives of all commercial television networks.

The formal negotiation commenced with Nine and Fox Sports in February this year.

A meeting of the Commission yesterday evening empowered the negotiating committee to sign a formal heads of agreement with Nine and Fox Sports which was executed at 9.50am today (August 21).

The agreement includes:
• A cash component of $925m, $90m of which will be paid prior to the start of the first season;
• Advertising packages to the value of $100m;
• The Nine Network will broadcast:
o Three weekly matches (two on Friday and one on Sunday);
o Three Thursday evening matches over the course of the year;
o A stand-alone Test and City v Country weekend;
o Wednesday night State of Origin matches;
o A night-time Grand Final (7.15pm kick-off);
o The Roosters Dragons Anzac Day matches;
o Two hours of Rugby League content each evening on digital Channel 94 plus two hours of content on Saturday and Sunday morning;
o Nine will ensure that all of its matches are telecast on either the ‘primary’ or ‘digital’ station in each state;
o The Queensland In Trust Super Cup.

• Fox Sports will telecast:
o Five weekly matches across Saturday, Sunday and Monday;
o Thirteen Sunday evening matches (6.30pm) over the course of the year;
o The Storm v Warriors Anzac Day game (other than in 2014);
o Three non NRL matches each week played in conjunction with the Telstra Premiership game (which will be shared between Toyota Cup, NSW Cup and GIO Schoolboys Cup);
• Nine and Fox Sports will provide coverage of The Four Nations Tournament;
• The first 20 rounds of the Premiership will be scheduled in advance of the season;
• The final six rounds will be scheduled at Round 16;
• Both Nine and Fox Sports will work together to stage two player development academies to train players in media presentation.

Nine Network Managing Director, Mr Jeff Browne, said that the network was over the moon at renewing its long and proud association with Rugby League.

“Nine’s Rugby League telecasts have won international acclaim and are fundamental to Nine’s Wide World of Sports brand.

“We are the gold standard in sports coverage and are delighted to bring the great game of Rugby League to our loyal viewers across the country as the exclusive free to air broadcaster.

“We have outstanding technical people, commentators and a team of experts who live and breathe Rugby League and they are passionate about achieving even higher standards in the next five years.”

Fox Sports Chief Executive, Mr Patrick Delany, said that the rights agreement would be a win for viewers across the country:

“This agreement secures a fabulous line-up of matches for Fox Sports subscribers.

“Super Saturday and Monday Night Football have become a way of life for Rugby League fans and Fox Sports is determined to make that experience more exciting and more interactive than ever before.

“Rugby League is a part of Fox Sports and Foxtel’s DNA and we are delighted to be able to continue bringing the live action to households across Australia every week.”

While celebrating the agreement with Nine and Fox Sports, Interim ARLC Chief Executive, Mr Shane Mattiske, said that there are still further opportunities in broadcast rights for Rugby League:

“As significant as this agreement is there are still substantial broadcasting properties yet to be negotiated.
“These include our New Zealand television rights and our mobile and website properties.

“It is too early to put a figure on these but certainly the value of the overall broadcasting package is going to increase, as will the opportunities that fans have to experience Rugby League.”

Mr Grant added that the negotiation process had underlined the confidence that all parties saw in the future of Rugby League:

“It’s been a difficult, complex and at times stressful process and we appreciate the confidence all parties have shown in our game by the innovative proposals they’ve put to us for consideration.

“From the Commission’s perspective we ensured that we engaged the right people to assist us in Greenhill Caliburn and that business-like approach has paid some real dividends.

“Interim Chief Executive Shane Mattiske and his team have been outstanding throughout the whole negotiation as have the other Commissioners - Ian Elliot as Chair of our Broadcast Sub-committee and Jeremy Sutcliffe and Gary Pemberton and our legal advisors.

“I think the entire game is entitled to feel proud of what has been achieved. It is a great tribute to the players and the clubs and the important thing now is to maximise the opportunities we now have for the future.”

Happy Birthday to.........Ian Schubert

Happy Birthday to........Ian Schubert.

The Western Suburbs Magpie family wish Ian a very happy birthday.

Ian (August 22) was a strongly built winger when he made his first grade debut in 1975 but later became a ball playing second rower in his latter years and had two playing stints with the Magpies.

He was a member of the 1972 Australian Schoolboys team that toured England, the first such tour and team mates included future Wests players Les Boyd & Jack Jeffries plus future first graders, State of Origin
and internationals such as Royce Ayliffe, Craig Young, Brian Hetherington & Robert Finch and of course they were coached by future Wests coach, Roy Masters.

However it wasn't until 1975 when he was 19 that Ian came to Sydney (from Wauchope) and signed with the Eastern Suburbs Roosters where with his long, shoulder length blonde hair, proved a sensation in his
debut season not only winning a premiership with the Roosters (playing at fullback after Russell Fairfax had broken his leg) but gaining selection in the Australian World Series squad that played in England, Wales
and France where he scored three tries in Australia's 18-6 win over Wales & another three tries in Australia's 16-13 loss to England.
In 1976 he was the Rooster's leading try scorer with nine and in 1978 was selected in the Australian Kangaroo squad that toured England & France but failed to gain selection in the test team.

He first joined Western Suburbs in 1981 and made his first grade premiership debut for Wests on the wing in their round 1 loss to Manly at Lidcombe Oval and captained the reserve grade side to a grand final
victory over Parramatta 19-12. He had graduated to the forwards when he rejoined the Roosters in 1982 where he had an outstanding season culminating in a second Kangaroo tour that year but again failed to
break into the test team.

Ian joined an exodus of Roosters players over to the Manly silvertails in 1983 (others included Kerry Boustead, Dave Brown and coach, Bob Fulton) and played second row in the Sea Eagles grand final loss to
Parramatta that year.

He joined Wests for his second stint in 1985 but only managed a handful of first grade appearances that year. However with the promotion of Steve Ghosn from reserve grade to first grade coach in 1986, Ian
not only went straight into first grade but was also handed the captaincy and added a new string to his bow, that of goal kicker. He played in all 24 premiership matches for Wests in 1986 and was the team's
leading pointscorer with 116 (three tries & fifty two goals).
In 1987, the club said goodbye to Lidcombe Oval and moved base to Campbelltown where they played out of Orana Park. Again Ian was captain and missed just one premiership that season and again was
the team's leading pointscorer this time with 94 ( one try & forty five goals). In 1988 he managed 16 first grade matches but was still the team's leading pointscorer with 57 (one try, twenty six goals & one field
goal) and retired after the 1989 season after playing only a handful of first grade matches but was the captain/coach of the club's reserve grade side that year.

In all, Ian played 95 first grade premiership matches during his time at Wests (1981, 1985-89) scoring 13 tries and kicking 123 goals plus 1 field goal. He had an off season stint in England playing for Leigh in 1986/87.

After he retired from playing, he coached reserve grade at Canterbury before moving into marketing/administration with the Roosters. During the Super League war, he was appointed International Operations
Manager for Super League and then was appointed by the NRL as salary cap auditor, a position he still holds to this day.

Ian was selected in the second row and vice captain of the Western Suburbs Team of the Eighties.

Rnd 24 Match Report - Magpies V Knights

The Newcastle Knights climbed into the top four on a pleasant afternoon in Merewether, waltzing to a 78-14 victory over a Western Suburbs side that could charitably be described as missing in action in the first half.

The tone was set early for the Magpies, with prop Jay Maseuli leaving the field with a knee injury after just one tackle in the match.

Things got worse in the first set of six for the Magpies, with Knights hooker Chris Adams busting through some feeble defence to open the Knight’s account for the afternoon. Josh Mantellato converted to put Newcastle up 6-0 inside three minutes.

A penalty for a high tackle off the kick off allowed Newcastle to find some quality field position, with Adrian Davis showing some impressive footwork to bamboozle the Magpies defence and touch down adjacent to the posts. Mantellato added the extras for 12-0.

A dubious knock on decision hurt Wests on ten minutes, with Adrian Davis again putting his Fittler-esque left foot step to good use, strolling through a gaping hole in Wests line to put on his second try. Mantellato added a slightly more difficult conversion to send the Knights ahead 18-0 inside ten minutes.

A left side raid from inside their own half on 15 minutes proved unsuccessful for Wests, with Newcastle hooker Chris Adams posting his second try after a simple run around. By now, Josh Mantellato had the ball on a string, popping the conversion over for the Knights, now ahead 24-0 after just a quarter hour.

Things just got worse for Wests, with a grubber kick taking more deflections than a pinball before Nathan Ross managed to find the white stripe for Newcastle. Josh Mantellato sent the difficult conversion attempt not just through the posts but almost to Swansea, with the Knights 30-0 up after 20 minutes of football.

A spate of Knights penalties only provided a temporary halt to the Knights points spree, with Evarn Tuimavave showing impressive strength to wrestle through three Magpie defenders to score the sixth Newcastle try of the afternoon. Josh Mantellato raised the flags and Newcastle were up 36-0 after 25 minutes.

The Knights broke 40 on the half hour, with Magpies custodian Zoram Watene spilling a tricky bomb under pressure, allowing Warren Schillings to score a fairly simple try. Josh Mantellato converted for 42-0.

The Magpies came close to scoring on 38 minutes, but a loose pass allowed the Knights to race 60 metres downfield. From the ensuing play, a left hand spread allowed Melbourne-bound Junior Sau to score. Josh Mantellato potted the conversion to leave Newcastle up 48-0.

The ignomy of the first half wrapped up after a driving kick from Adrian Davis allowed Nathan Ross to score his second of the day. Another magnificent kick from Mantellato left the Magpies down 54-0 at the break.

The second half did not start well for Wests, with a wonderful around the corner pass from Joel Edwards allowing Mitch Williams to open the second half account of the Knights. Josh Mantellato picked up where he left off, with Newcastle hitting 60 just three minutes into the second stanza.

Canberra-bound Edwards showed his handiwork again on 45 minutes, with a glorious bullet pass resulting in Siuatonga Likiliki notching up a four pointer near the western touchline. Josh Mantellato was performing party tricks by now, with an enormous conversion leaving the Knights 66-0 up after 45 minutes.

Newcastle didn’t need any such ball skills to register their 12th try, with Junior Sau somehow finding the line with four Magpies hanging off him. Josh Mantellato made it 72-0 with a half hour remaining.

Knights halfback Adrian Davis made it a hat-trick for the afternoon on 58 minutes, with yet another left step allowing him to touch down under the posts for lucky number 13. Josh Mantellato again converted, sending Newcastle out to 78-0 with 22 minutes still to play.

Faced with the very real possibility of having three figures posted against them, the Magpies found some resolve and go forward. On 63 minutes, it paid dividends, with a mixup between Wes Naiqama and Nathan Ross seeing a Nigel Millgate bomb go to ground. Greg Davis was on hand to touch down for the Magpies, with even the most one-eyed Knights fans applauding the Magpie’s never say die attitude. Latu Fifita converted with a little help from the uprights, the Knights ahead 78-6.

Their try seemed to spur Wests into life, and a trio of strong runs down their right hand flank resulted in a sweeping backline movement to the left, with a game of hot potato eventually leaving Michael La Manna as the tryscorer at the end. Latu Fifita sprayed the conversion attempt wide, with the Knights up 78-10 after 69 minutes.

Three minutes later the Magpies found space on the left, with Keanu Rogers finding space on a 40 metre raid. A quick play the ball allowed Nigel Millgate to put in a gloriously placed kick, with Greg Davis on hand to mark the ball on his chest and score in the corner. Trent Touma failed with the conversion attempt, the Knights in front 78-14 with eight minutes to play.

The Knights looked determined to punish Wests for their cheek in the last eight minutes, but some gritty defence saw the Magpies out, with Michael La Manna coming up with a cover tackle on Josh Mantellato that would have made Steve Mortimer proud.

While the Newcastle defence lacked intensity in the final quarter, their attack certainly didn’t, and the confidence garnered from finally posting points saw the Magpies stand up in defence to prevent a second 80-point scoreline against them this season.

For the Knights, Adrian Davis toyed with the Magpies defence, while Joel Edwards demonstrated just what a good player the Canberra Raiders have picked up for 2013. Josh Mantellato played like an extra forward, often pushing through bigger Magpie defenders with his strength.

For the Magpies, Seffa Silafu and Michael Lekkas were giants in attack and defence, while Henry Godinet looked dangerous out of dummy half when brought on.

Wests will look to post their first win of the season in their final home game against Mounties next Saturday at Campbelltown, with a 3pm kickoff, while the Knights, having secured a playoff spot and moving into the top four, will host minor premiership hopefuls North Sydney next Sunday at 3pm.

Match Report - Round 23 VB NSW Cup - Wests v Windsor

The Windsor Wolves travelled to Campbelltown desperate to break a three match loosing streak to stay in the race for the minor premiership and came away with an emphatic 60-8 win over the Western Suburbs Magpies.

The Magpies showed some fight in the first half to trail 18-4 and with a bit of luck the score may have been closer at half time but Windsor stepped up the tempo in the second half and ran away with the game which included 30 points scored in the final 18 minutes of play with five-eighth Matt Mundine scoring 28 points from 2 tries and 10 goals.

The afternoon started well enough for the Magpies when local Campbelltown junior and former Group 6 representative, Amanono Tovio scored in the corner after a neat passing movement along the backline after Windsor dropped the ball in the own 20m line. Trent Touma's conversion attempt went wide up Wests were up 4-0 after 8 mins.

Windsor hit back at the 12 minute mark after a Magpies error in the play the ball whilst attacking on Windsor's 40m line. The Wolves were able to work down field and Matt Mundine crashed over from close range on the last tackle. He converted his own try and the Wolves were in front 6-4 and were never headed for the rest of the game.

Wests then kicked the ball dead from the kick off gifting Windsor field position and former Magpie Dean Parata scored at the 15 minute mark after accepting a wayward pass and ducking under the Wests defence close to the line. Mundine added the extras for a 12-4 scoreline.

Another former Magpie, Mitch Achurch scored next at the 26 minute mark after the Wolves were awarded a penalty on their own 40m line and was able to crash through the defence on a 30m run to the tryline. Mundine converted for an 18-4 scoreline.
For the final 10 minutes of the first half, Wests received 3 penalties and had 3 scrum wins so they had enough possession to score more points but failed to do so and went into the sheds down 18-4 at halftime.

Wests needed to start the second half with points but it was the Wolves who scored in just the second minute of the second half after yet another Magpie error resulted in a Windsor scrum win on their own 30m line. Centre Junior Vai Vai scored after great lead up work by Parata who was calling the shots at halfback.
Mundine added the extras and it was 24-4.

Wests hit back at the 47 minute mark after fullback Zoram Watene picked up a stray Windsor pass on Wests 30m line and ran downfield 50m before being brought down by Vai Vai who then held down Watene and the referee had no hesitation in sending Vai Vai to the sin bin for 10 min. Watene was then able to score out wide from the resulting penalty. Touma failed with the conversion attempt but Wests had a sniff at 24-8 however failed to add points when the Wolves were one man short with the Wolves scoring almost immediately Vai Vai returned to the field when Krys Freeman, son of former New Zealand test halfback and captain, Gary Freeman, scored from dummy half after burrowing his way through the defence close to the line. Mundine's conversion saw the score increase to 30-8 at the 58 minute mark.

Then Windsor powered home in the final 18 minutes starting with a try to fullback Travis Robinson at the 62 minute mark after Achurch busted the Wests line 20m out and popped the ball to Robinson who strolled over near the posts. The score was 36-8 after Mundine converted.
Then from the kick off Wests conceded a penalty on the first tackle, from which Windsor worked the play downfield and Mundine scored after again good lead up work from Achurch who was able to stand and offload in a tackle and Mundine was able to wrestle out a tackle to score his second try. His conversion made it 42-8.

At the 70 minute mark, Parata was able to fool the Wests defence and scoot through a gap on a run to the tryline and drew the fullback with a neat pass to Travis Robinson to score under the posts. Mundine converted for 48-8 scoreline.
Another Wests error from the kickoff, this time players being in front of the kicker saw Windsor work the ball down field but they were this time denied points but it didn't take them long to score again when Mundine created the next try after the Wests defence held off him and he was able ran through a gap for Malakai Watenen to score out wide. Mundine added the extras and it was 54-8 and Krys Freeman scored his second try for the afternoon after the Wolves scored from the kickoff when Vai Vai ran the ball back and just accelerated past the defence and ran 40m before finding Freeman in support. Mundine's conversion made the final score 60-8.

For Wests, it was another case of turnovers resulting in the opposition scoring points. Poor ball security and lack of discipline in defence have taken their toll on the Magpies this season.
Zoram Watene gave his usual outstanding performance at fullback. Centre turned second rower, Michael Lekkas was aggressive in both attack and defence and was able to stand and offload in tackles several times. He has improved as the season wears on after having playing in the Penrith junior reps squads. Props Jay Maseuli and Latu Fifita never stopped trying and former Souths junior Alan Daly was busy in defence. Michael La Manna had a strong game at five-eighth while Nigel Millgate & Trent Touma again figured prominently in Wests attacking movements and Greg Davis is a genuine speedster.
For Windsor, former Magpies Mitch Achurch and Dean Parata were outstanding. Mitch was able to crash his way through the defence with ease and Parata had a terrific game at halfback. Five-eighth Matt Mundine stepped up a notch in the second half and big forwards, Chris Armit, Jake Grace, Kurt Foggo and another former Magpie, Duan Poaneki led from the front.

For Wests, they travel up the F3 next Sunday to take on the hot and cold Newcastle Knights outfit.

Windsor 60 (Mundine 2, Freeman 2, Robinson 2, Parata, Achurch, Vai Vai, Watene tries: Mundine 10 goals) def Wests 8 (Tovio, Watene tries).

Match Report - Round 22 VB NSW Cup - Canterbury v Wests

The Western Suburbs Magpies put in a spirited performance tonight against defending premiers Canterbury but in the end were simply outclassed 58-18 in a match which was played at the Magpies former spiritual home, Lidcombe Oval although it was designated a Bulldogs home game. The Bulldogs number 9, Shane Pumipi scored three tries whilst Bryson Goodwin kicked 9 goals from 10 attempts while Tuki Jackson scored a double for the Magpies.

The full moon was out and it was the dogs that were howling after 5 minutes when backrower Josh Gill crossed the line near the posts after good lead up out wide by the Bulldgos backline. Goodwin converted for a 6-0 scoreline.

Wests lock and tackling dynamo, Tom Morrison suffered concussion after going in awkwardly in a tackle at around the 10 minute mark and took no further part in the game after being assisted from the field of play.

The Bulldogs scored again at the 13 minute mark when front rower, Jake Finn simply smashed his way through some ordinary attempted tackles on Wests 20m line to score close to the posts. Goodwin made no mistake with the extras for a 12-0 scoreline.

Josh Gill set up the dogs next try at the 16 minute mark when he burst through more flimsy defence on halfway before offloading to rookie fullback Gerard McCallum who raced away to score. With Goodwin adding the extras, it was a point a minute at this stage, dogs up 18-0.

Wests were then able to get some possession and were rewarded with a try to Tuki Jackson at the 23rd minute mark after halfback Trent Touma sliced through the Bulldogs defence near their 20m line before passing to Jackson who scored near the posts. Touma added the extras and it was 18-6.

Wests were in again four minutes later on the back of a 40/20 kick from Nigel Millgate, when Tuki Jackson was able to beat the defence on an angled run before straightening and scoring beside the posts. With Touma adding the extras, it was 18-12 to the dogs.

Then as has happened often this season, the Magpies coughed up possession after winning a scrum and then compounded the error by giving away a penalty which result in Shane Pumipi scoring the first of his three tries when he burrowed his way from dummy half over the tryline at the 33rd minute mark. Goodwin was on target and the dogs extended their lead to 24-12.

The dogs scored again at the 36th minute mark when a cross field bomb on the last tackle by Trent Cutler as caught by former Canberra winger, Drury Low who then was able wrestle his way out of his opponent's attempted tackle to score out wide. Goodwin converted for a 30-12 scoreline which remained the score at halftime.

Besides loosing Tom Morrison early, the Magpies also suffered when big front rower, Seffa Silafau sustained a leg injury midway through the first half and although he did return for the second half, was hampered for the rest of the game by the injury.

Wests showed in the first half that with a bit of possession, they could hold their own in attack but poor defence resulted in some soft tries to the dogs and that was how it started in the second half when just three minutes in, replacement Kose Lelei just crashed through some poor defence and ran 30m to score near the sticks. Goodwin's conversion made it 36-12.

Wests then received piggyback penalites at the 48 minute mark near the dogs 20m line and scored after a loose ball was scooped up and given to fullback Zoram Watene who grubber kicked in behind the dogs defence and with no one home, dived on the ball in the ingoal area. Touma converted and it was 36-18.

The dogs extinguished any thoughts of a revival when Low scored his second try at the 57 minute mark when he jinked and stepped inside the defence to score. Goodwin was on target and it was 42-18.

Shane Pumipi score back to back tries at the 63rd and 65th minute mark when he was able to bust the defence each time from Wests 20m line. Both tries were converted and it was 54-18 in the blink of an eye and the dogs wrapped it up three minutes from fulltime when Luke McDougall scored out wide after a bulldozing run by Steve Azzi near halfway. Goodwin hit the upright with his conversion attempt from the sideline for his only miss of the night and for a final scoreline of Canterbury 58 Wests 18.

For the Magpies, their best included Nigel Millgate who seems to have found a new home in the number 9 jersey and halfback Trent Touma has slotted back into the side with ease and both of them were heavily involved in Wests attacking raids. Tuki Jackson as always proved a handful when with the ball and even with a leg injury, Seffa Silafau was constantly making the hard metres up the middle. Daniel La Manna continues to make his mark with his defensive workload and as usual, Zoram Watene was scheming from the fullback position.

For Canterbury, Trent Culter just toyed with the Magpies. Whilst he didn't score any points, he was forever causing Wests headaches in defence with his uncanny ability to bounce off tacklers, stand in tackles and off load plus a magnificant passing and kicking game. His halves partner, Chad Isles continues his impressive rookie season and it seems the dogs have unearthed another fine five/eighth/halfback. The forward pack was led by Josh Gill, Jake Finn and Tim Browne whilst replacements Ray Moujalli and Steven Azzi hit the line running and left a few defenders feeling a little sore after the game. Shane Pumipi was also a standout making ground from dummy half with ease and scoring three easy tries.

For Wests, they travel back to Campbelltown Stadium next saturday where they face a Windsor side looking to bounce back after their surprise loss last week to Mounties and a shot at the minor premiership.

Canterbury 58 (Pumipi 3, Low 2, Finn, Gill, McCallum, Lelei, McDougall tries: Goodwin 9 goals) def Wests 18 (Jackson 2, Watene tries: Toumda 3 goals).
