Rnd 2 - OAMPS Pre Season vs Wentworthville
The defending Premiers accounted for Auburn 32-18 last weekend but our boys will be out to atone for last year's preliminary final.
Let's make sure we turn out loud and proud on Saturday at 1:45pm to see Wests get up!
Record investment in Rugby League
After funding and expenses, the NRL delivered a record $49.6 million in the 2013 financial year, including significant revenue growth in both broadcast and central operations.
ARLC Chairman, Mr John Grant, and NRL Chief Executive, Mr Dave Smith, today presented the NRL 2013 financial results, which represented a $60 million turnaround from 2012.
“We have significantly increased our investment in the game following the new broadcast rights deal, with 100 per cent of all revenue generated by the media rights deal invested in the game,” Mr Smith said.
“Our non-broadcast revenue through sponsorship, major game revenue and merchandise covers all central operating expenses – and still generates a surplus which is reinvested in the game.
“Our results show that Rugby League is investing more in the game than ever before and is now truly positioned to enter a period of growth that will make it the strongest and healthiest it has ever been.”
Mr Smith said the NRL would invest in areas which generated strong commercial returns.
The NRL is forecasting that more than $200 million will be available for strategic investment in the future of the game of which $80 million is forecast to be set aside for a “sustainability fund” that is invested to generate a commercial return over the next four years.
Like private sector companies, the NRL is creating a reserve to ensure it has financial security to withstand any unforeseen events. The NRL’s goal is for non-broadcast revenue to double over the next four years.
In addition, at least $120 million will be put into a “growth fund” over four years to be used to invest directly in the strategic priorities of the game from grassroots to NRL clubs, fans and members, stadia and infrastructure, and commercial operations that generate more returns for investment.
The $120 million will be spent on football and participation, fans and members and financial sustainability and governance.
ARLC Chairman, Mr John Grant, said 2013 had delivered a solid injection to the growth fund and, as this was invested over time, it would ensure Rugby League has a sustainable foundation from which it can continue to evolve as the most dynamic and exciting sport in Australia.
“We set out as a Commission to create a financial base that, if invested wisely, could make a real and long term difference to Rugby League,” he said.
“In 2014 and beyond, we will work with our clubs, State Leagues and affiliates to apply the funds in ways that meet the game’s strategic priorities.”
Mr Smith said strategic investments were already being made in the game.
More than $4 million has already been spent on a membership drive and player education and welfare in the three months since the end of the 2013 financial year (October 31).
And a further $30 million has been identified to invest in key programs including activities to create a stronger fan and membership culture; support for clubs playing in the State Leagues, grass roots infrastructure and touch football participation.
“The $1.2 billion broadcast rights deal, negotiated in 2012, provided the opportunity to fundamentally change the way we operate,” Mr Smith said.
“We are using this opportunity to embed a new funding model where all revenue generated by the media rights deal is wholly invested back into the game and central business expenses are self-funded by non-broadcast revenue.
“At the same time, we are being disciplined with our costs, especially in relation to staffing and administration.
“This will continue with the aim of keeping operating cost increases in line with inflation or lower if possible over the next four years.”
Highlights from the 2013 financial results include:
• Central revenues of $314 million with increases across both broadcast (up 118%) and central operations (up 16%). Led by 25% increase in sponsorship and 14% in major game revenue.
• A higher yield from major events and sponsorship to give the NRL a better quality income stream.
• More than $241 million invested into the game.
• $2.2 million investment in new governance measures, including the Integrity Unit, to deliver a state-of-the-art drug testing regime, policing the NRL rules, and managing the salary cap.
• Increase in club funding from $76 million to almost $120 million (up 57%), ensuring that for the first time NRL club funding was greater than the agreed salary cap.
• Increase in funding for state leagues and affiliates to about $17 million (up 18%).
• More than $22 million allocated to support grassroots competitions and Rugby League school based activities.
• Stable operating costs achieved despite revenue growth with a 2% increase in administration costs to $15.7 million plus an extra $2 million in competition, player education and welfare and community costs.

OAMPS Pre-Season Match Report: Wests v Windsor
After being outclassed a fortnight earlier by the Penrith Panthers NSW Cup side, the Magpies looked to show what they were capable of, and the Magpies didn't take long to demonstrate they meant business.
After a series barnstorming runs, Dayne Craig ran the short side to create an overlap before handing off to Tala Mapesone, who strolled over. Michael Stevens potted the touchline conversion and the Magpies led 6-0 after just four minutes.
An exchange of penalties and handling errors stalled the game but with seven minutes to quarter time, the Magpies added to their lead with a series of short passes down the left hand side finding Junior Vaivai, who stepped inside the Windsor fullback to touch down. Michael Stevens pushed the kick across the face of goal, which saw Wests secure a 10-0 lead which they took to the first break.
Wests picked up where they left off with a bizarre try to begin the second quarter. A Windsor bomb was allowed to bounce and was picked up by Junior Vaivai. Vaivai kicked ahead to avoid going out and was deemed to have regained possession by the referee despite the protests of the Wolves players. From the ensuing play the ball, Michael Stevens sold a dummy to the first marker and sent Rusty Bristow storming through what would more accurately be described as a chasm rather than a gap in the Windsor defence, Bristow running 50 metres to touch down out wide. Stevens again failed to convert, Wests ahead 14-0 four minutes in.
Wests added to their score on ten minutes with Brstow's second try, who carried plenty of defence over the line after a glorious long ball from Michael Stevens. Unfortunately, Stevens' boot wasn't quite as on song as his hands, with yet another conversion attempt sailing wide, with Wests now leading 18-0.
Windsor needed to score quickly and did so Iain Riccardi, who performed a neat hit and spin manoveure to touch down. James Thiel added the extras from alongside the posts and Windsor were back to within a dozen.
However, Windsor could not maintain their momentum and right on halftime, the Magpies registered their fifth try with Stevens again playing provider with a long ball, which this time found the chest of Junior Vaivai. Unfortunately yet another Stevens conversion sailed wide, with Wests heading to the main break ahead 22-6.
The third quarter was memorable not for any wonderful attacking moves, but rather the incredible scrambling defence Wests put together to begin the period. This was vindicated seven minutes into the second half, as a lovely cutut ball from Nu Akeripa sent Tala Mapesone in for his second of the day, the third player to register a double. Michael Stevens was not enjoying a change of luck with the kicks, Wests ahead 26-6 after 49 minutes.
As the third quarter wound down, Wests were starting to feel the pinch of some extended periods of defence, and Windsor prop Jack Quealey took advantage of a tiring Magpies defence to charge through the Magpies' smaller player to grab a try. James Thiel failed to convert and, with 20 minutes to play, Wests lead by 26-10.
The final quarter was a true trial as both sides gave up the ball as often as penalties, although the Wests defence was certainly the more aggressive. However, Windsor would have the last laugh, as Logan Geyer stormed through the Wests defence to race from halfway to score. Iain Riccardi slotted the extras, but it was too little too late as the Magpies ran out victors by 26-16.
Magpies coach Leo Epifania said he was happy wth the performance as, although there was still much to work on, there were clear signs of improvement from the team's last performance against the Panthers. Epifania said more hard work and more game time would see even more improvement and he felt the Magpies are n the right path for the coming season.
Wests will now look to take revenge for their elimination in last year's preliminary final when they take on Wentworthville next weekend.

Local Wests Tigers back in Camden
JAMES Tedesco and Mick Potter will recall fond memories when the Wests Tigers run onto Kirkham Oval for an NRL trial match against Penrith on February 8.
For fullback Tedesco, a Camden Rams junior, Kirkham Oval was where he discovered his love of league.
"I've had a lot of memories and great times at this ground, so I'm glad Mick has told me that I'm playing because my family and friends will be coming down," Tedesco told the Chronicle.
Tedesco had a breakthrough season after recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2012 - scoring eight tries for the Tigers last season before representing Italy at the Rugby League World Cup.
