On a sunny but cool Sunday afternoon, the North Sydney Bears made it three wins in a row when they disposed of Western Subutrbs 58-6 at North Sydney Oval.
The Bears were too strong and fast for the young, inexperienced Magpies outfit with fringe Souths NRL player, Josh Starling having an outstanding match for the black and reds. Whilst Wests were looking to consolidate on their great performance last week against Cronulla but in the end, were outclassed.
It took the Bears just three minutes to open their account when their captain, Bennett Leslie scored in the grandstand cnr after breaking the defensive line just 15m out. Jack Hawkins missed the conversion for a 4-0 scoreline.
The next 20 mins saw the Magpies with the lion share of possession but their inexperience showed with a lack of patience when they had the ball resulting in several turnovers.
The Bears scored at the 23rd minute marj when a clever kick by halfback Ryan Carr over the Wests defence was regather by winger Chris Centrone who was brought down just centimetres from the Wests try line. A quick play the ball saw Souths NRL centre, Fetuli Talanoa score in the cnr. The conversion from the sideline was successful by Hawkins and the Bears were up 10-0.
Just five minutes later, Norths were in again when second rower, Blake Judd scored after stepping inside the Wests defence on a 20m run to the tryline. Hawkins added the extras for a 16-0 scoreline.
Then a superb Norths try at the 33rd minute mark when halfback Carr shaped to kick one way but instead grubber kick the ball on his outstep for the ball to sit up perfectly for fullback Kieran Vale to collect the ball just 10m out from the Wests line to score besides the posts. Hawkins conversion made it 22-0.
Wests conceded a penalty just seconds from the halftime siren on their 10m line and a pin point kick to the winger Centrone from Carr resulted in another four pointer just as the siren was sounding and Hawkins kicked another sideline conversion for a half time score of 28-0 to the Bears.
At 28-0, it was going to be hard work for Wests to get back into the game and a good start to the second half was vital. However it was the Bears who started the second half better and Bennett Leslie scored his second for the afternoon at the 47 minute mark after the Bears won a scrum on their 20m line and were able to work the ball into Wests half where Leslie burst through out wide and raced away 40m to score. Hawkins failed to convert and it was 32-0.
Norths scored again at the 53rd minute on the back on consecutive penalties when former Balmain/Ryde Eastwood forward Chris Hyland prove too strong close to the line to cross near the posts. Hawkins made no mistake with the extras and it was now 38-0.
Wests then scored their only try of the game at the 61st minute mark after a barnstorming run by Seffa Silafau. The movement started on Wests 40m line when Michael Lekkas was able to palm off a defender and pass to lock, Tom Morrison who quickly passed to Silafau. He was able to smash through the Norths forwards and raced 25m upfield before finding the flying Zoram Watene in support who raced away from the Norths fullback to score under the posts. Latu Fifita converted for a 38-6 scoreline.
Norths centre, Talanoa scored his second try at the 66 minute mark when he was able to simply palm off a would-be defender to score out wide. Hawkins added the extras for a 44-6 scoreline.
Further tries in the final 10 minutes to Josh Starling who scored close after a charge close to the line, winger Centrone who spun out of a tackler to plant the ball down out wide and a second try to Starling who just bulldozed his way past defenders on a 30m charge to the tryline for a final scoreline of Norths 58 Wests 6.
For Wests, Seffa Silafau was a stand out and always brought the Wests contingent in the crowd to its feet every time he charged into the Norths pack and often left his Norths counterparts bruised from his runs. His defensive work was also tremendous. Light weight forwards Daniel La Manna and Tom Morrison were always in the thick of the action with their high workrate in defence and Tom showed he isn't just a tackling machine with a wonderful 20m grubber kick towards the Norths tryline which he followed through causing a knock on from the Bears fullback.
Fullack Zoram Watene as usual was superb in the air when defusing bombs and running the ball back from kicks. The halves Trent Touma and Chris Nay were also busy guiding the side around the park but Nay suffered a serious shin injury early in the second half which may have ended his promising debut season.
For Norths, their smallish but robust pack were like terriers in defence and were able to cross the advantage line much easier then their Wests counterparts. Josh Starling in particular was a handful every time he touched the ball whilst Brock Molan, Blake Judd and Neccrom Areaiiti were not far behind. With Souths NRL pack playing so well, its no wonder Starling and Areaiiti can't get a start there. They may well be playing regular NRL first grade elsewhere.
Halfback Ryan Carr was possibly the best on the ground, his ability to guide the Bears around the park with his passing and a great kicking game went a long way towards Norths easy victory. Centres Bennett Leslie and Talanoa were just too big, strong and fast for their Wests counterparts whilst winger Centrone outshone his more illustrious team mate on the other wing, Curits Johnstone.
For Wests, it doesn't get any easlier next week when they take on the competition's benchmark side, Canterbury on friday 3rd August at Wests former spiritual home ground, Lidcombe Oval with a 7pm kick off.

Wests 25 Years in Campbelltown & Hall of Fame Dinner
A ‘25 Years in Campbelltown’ Gala Dinner will be held on Friday evening, August 24.
Western Suburbs Magpies established themselves in the City of Campbelltown in 1987 and 25 years later, still play out of Campbelltown Sports Stadium along with the Wests Tigers.
To be held at Wests Leagues Club Campbelltown, a highlight of the evening will be the naming of ‘A Best of Team from the 25 Years in Campbelltown and a coach’ featuring players from Western Suburbs Magpies and Wests Tigers.
Supporters will soon be able to nominate their own ‘best of team from the 25 years in Campbelltown’ on weststigers.com.au with the closest team chosen to the one selected by a panel of experts winning a table at the dinner.
A video tribute to the late Keith Holman will be held and three people will be inducted into the Western Suburbs Magpies Hall Of Fame.
A silent auction will be held with all monies raised being donated to Concord Cancer Centre who cared for the late Sonia Farah.

2GB on board for VB NSW Cup Final Series
Sydney’s most popular radio station, 2GB, has today confirmed
its high rating sports show, The Continuous Call, will broadcast weeks
two and three of the VB NSW Cup Final Series live across their network.

Match report - Round 20 VB NSW Cup - Western Suburbs v Cronulla
On a crisp, windy afternoon at Campbelltown Stadium, the Western Suburbs Magpies went close to securing their first win of the season going down in a nail-biting contest to Cronulla 36-28. The parochial Wests crowd willed on their team to win and the result was in the balance until a try to Cronulla just two minutes from the final siren to centre, Mahe Fonua who scored three tries for the afternoon while for Wests, Tuki Jackson scored a double.
Things started badly for Wests when they coughed up possession on the 4th tackle of the match on their 40m line. From the resulting scrum win, Sharks centre Ricky Leutele pushed off a defender easily and then ran 40m unimpeded to the try line. Halfback Chad Townsend added the extras and it was 6-0 after just 90 seconds.
The Magpies were able to draw level at the 14 minute mark on the back on three consecutive penalties, the last earnt by halfback Trent Touma who charged down a Cronulla kick and was then held down whilst trying desperately to get to his feet for a quick play the ball. Whilst in the Sharks 20m line, Magpies fullback Zoram Watene screamed for the ball and once received, he put in a perfectly placed kick in behind the defence for himself to score out wide. Trent Touma converted and it was 6all.
Wests scored again at the 24th minute when Tuki Jackson, who played Bundaberg Cup last season with Kingsgrove Colts, bulldozed his way out of 2 attempted tackles on a 10m charge close to the line to score near the posts. Touma converted and Wests were in unfamiliar territory leading 12-6.
A penalty goal to Wests at the 30th minute mark by Touma extended the lead to 14-6, something the Magpies have not enjoyed so far this season.
The euphoria however was short lived when Cronulla scored at the 33rd minute mark when winger Stewart Mills scored in the corner despite howls of protest by the Wests players and crowd towards referee Luke Phillips for an obstruction. Townsend conversion attempt went wide and it was 14-10 with Wests in front however Wests conceded a penalty in the next set of six to gift Cronulla field position and they scored at the 36th minute mark when Mahe Fonua scored from a bomb. Townsend missed another conversion attempt but the Sharks had regained the lead 16-14 and that would remain the half time score.
Wests coach, Jason Williams instilled into his side to believe in themselves and to reduce any unforced errors. For once, despite the Sharks first try, the defence of the Magpies was holding firm.
Wests started the second half in the best possible fashion when Jackson scored his second try of the afternoon just 3 minutes in. For the second time in the game, Cronulla were penalised for being in front of the kicker from a goal line drop out. From the resulting play, Jackson proved too strong close to the line to score near the posts. Touma was on target with the extras and the Magpies had regained the lead 20-16.
Cronulla levelled at the 47th minute mark when Fonua sliced through the defence on an angled 20m run to the tryline. Townsend failed to convert and the score was locked up at 20 all.
The next 10 minutes saw some see-soaring play from both sides on the back of errors and a crucial error at the 59 minute mark was made by Wests on their 20m line when they were bungled into touch on a kick retrieve. From the resulting scrum win, Cronulla worked the ball to the eastern grandstand side before interchange player Carlos Hotene scored in the corner. Townsend converted from the sideline and Cronulla were back in front 26-20 and extended the lead at the 64th minute to 32-20 when former Wests Magpies Jersey Flegg player & local Campbelltown junior, Willie Mataka scored in the Western grandstand corner after an angled run by Tyrone Peachey who held the ball up just long enough to draw the defence and pop the ball to Mataka.
However the never-say-die Magpie spirit then kicked in when Daniel La Manna scored in the 70th minute after he regathered his own grubber kick after a ricochet off a Cronulla player. Touma missed the conversion but the Magpies would ensure a grandstand finish when centre Joe Uluibau, playing his first game for the Magpies after starting the year in Bundaberg Cup with Burwood/North Ryde, scored out wide at the end of a passing movement at the 75th minute. Touma was unable to add the extras but it was now Cronulla 32 Wests 28.
The Sharks finished any hope of an upset win by the Magpies when Fonua scored his match sealer at the 78th minute.
For the Magpies, it was their most impressive performance of the year by far and against a side that had won 3 out of their last 4 matches against quality opposition. It truly was a tremendous team performance today by the Magpies and with an ounce of luck, would have secured the two points and their first win.

Both shared the kicking duties and this was one area the Magpies did very well today. Match Report Rnd 19 VB NSW Cup - Newtown v Western Suburbs
After a two week layoff courtesy of a two byes, a refreshed Western Suburbs Magpies outfit travelled to Henson Park to take on the Newtown Jets in Game 2 of the Tom Raudonikis Cup for 2012 and it was the Jets who prevailed scoring a convincing 60-8 victory on a glorious sunny Sydney afternoon in front of a very healthy crowd who turned up to see two of the great foundation clubs of rugby league.
The Jets were keen to end a four game loosing streak whilst the Magpies just needed to believe in themselves and get the basic things right to secure their first win of the year.
The Magpies had a try disallowed in the 6th minute when a final pass to winger Tuki Jackson was ruled forward. However the Magpies didn't have to wait to long to draw first blood when former Kingsgrove Colts player Henry Godinet scored from dummy half in the 8th minute of play on the back of barnstorming runs by Seffa Silafau & Henry Iuta. The conversion attempt by Nigel Millgate went wide and it was Wests up 4-0.
The Jets scored their first of 10 tries for the afternoon at the 17 minute mark after Wests coughed up possession on their 40m line. After winning the scrum, the Jets were able to work the ball in good field position when former Auckland Vulcans forward, Saulala Houma was able to smash his way through the defence 10m out to score under the sticks. Halfback Blake Lazarus converted for a 6-4 lead.
The Jets were in again just two minutes later after Wests gave away a penalty on the first tackle from the kickoff. Fullback Alofa Alofa scored near the posts after a great run by the #9 Glenn Dumbrell who busted the Wests defence and put Alofa away to score. Lazarus added the extras for a 12-4 scoreline.

For Wests, Tom Morrison would have given Robbie Farah's tackle count in Origin 2 a run for its money and Seffa Silafau also had a great defensive game as well hitting the line hard with his hitups. Henry Godinet was busy around the rucks in defence whilst Henry Iuta continues to impress every game with his ability stand in tackles and offload. Chris Nay has made a complete recovery from his knee injury in the first game of the season and Wests season may have been different had he not succumb to that injury.Winger Tuki Jackson had a big game and was able to burst through tackles several times and the ever reliable Zoram Watene at fullback also had a strong game.
For Newtown, whilst they had no regular NRL first graders in their squad today, they still had a quality team run onto the paddock with several seasoned NSW Cup players and their experience was there to see.
The forwards today were led by Ahmad Ellaz, Josh Ailaomoi who is contracted to the Sydney Roosters after coming across from the Newcastle Knights U20 from last year and Andrew Pearn whilst their halves combination of Kheirallah and Lazarus is one of the best in the competition. Winger Daniel Tupou has first grade stamped all over him and their dummy halves, Glenn Dumbrell and former Wests player Kurt Kara slot into their roles with perfection.

The Jets were keen to end a four game loosing streak whilst the Magpies just needed to believe in themselves and get the basic things right to secure their first win of the year.
The Magpies had a try disallowed in the 6th minute when a final pass to winger Tuki Jackson was ruled forward. However the Magpies didn't have to wait to long to draw first blood when former Kingsgrove Colts player Henry Godinet scored from dummy half in the 8th minute of play on the back of barnstorming runs by Seffa Silafau & Henry Iuta. The conversion attempt by Nigel Millgate went wide and it was Wests up 4-0.
The Jets scored their first of 10 tries for the afternoon at the 17 minute mark after Wests coughed up possession on their 40m line. After winning the scrum, the Jets were able to work the ball in good field position when former Auckland Vulcans forward, Saulala Houma was able to smash his way through the defence 10m out to score under the sticks. Halfback Blake Lazarus converted for a 6-4 lead.

Campbelltown Warriors - Women in League Round
Campbelltown Warriors will be hosting their Women in League Round this Saturday 14th July to raise money for the McGrath Foundation and Campbelltown Hospital Oncology Ward.

Press Release: Seeking more details
The Board of Western Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club Ltd. wishes to advise its membership that the Joint Venture Football Operations Subcommittee is further reviewing information regarding possible arrangements for the 2013 competition.
We regret having to delay the distribution of any recommendations, but the Board considers it is important that Western Suburbs can ensure all that stakeholders will be represented in an equal manner.
Further questions are being put by Board members to the Football Operations Subcommittee to seek additional information regarding all issues that are currently being considered.
When sufficient details are provided, it is proposed that they will then be reviewed and discussed at a General Meeting.

A Subtle Turf War
Looking at the new A league franchise the western Sydney wanderers
it had me thinking . Western
Sydney is a very big area. It stretches out from Parramatta, to Penrith, down
to Bankstown, and even Campbelltown is regarded as a part of Western Sydney. Football (soccer) and
AFL have targeted sydneys west rugby
leagues heartland in a battle against the NRL. Well it hasn’t been officially declared a battle yet as all
codes have said theres no reason to ditch your supported side to follow another
team & code, all can co-exist together. They may well do but can corporate
support stretch that far ? only time will tell. And technically they can co
exist at a spectator level , this is more a battle to influence kids at
grassroots level not for established supporters. If you see the colour schemes
for all the footy codes in the west its clearly the AFL & Football Australia
have strategically tried to win the hearts of NRL fans by selecting colours for their teams
that mimic those in the NRL. The GWS club have an orange,white & charcoal
colour scheme clearly trying to win over & target wests tigers fans &
the newly formed Sydney wanderers have a black/white & red colour scheme trying
to influence Penrith (who are predominately black) and possibly old north Sydney
& wests magpie fans.
With the GWS club training base at blacktown and their home ground at skoda stadium at homebush its not far from camp concorde the wests tigers base. The Sydney wanderers are in talks with the Parramatta stadium trust to set up base their, another strategic move to infiltrate behind enemy lines.
