A Magpie Christmas Present

Western Suburbs brought a little bit of Christmas cheer to the Bessenyei household with the delivery of a special framed jersey.

Earlier this year, Ellee-Rose Bessenyei was treated to an all access day at the footy courtesy of Western Suburbs, Wests Tigers and Epilepsy Action Australia, when she got to go behind the scenes and meet Morris the Magpie, Timmy the Tiger and her heroes who wear black and white (and gold).

Our media man Keith Topolski dropped by to visit Ellee-Rose and her family and presented them with the jersey Rusty Bristow wore in the 28 June match against Guildford, where Ellee-Rose kicked off.

Wests are continuing to work with Epilepsy Action Australia in efforts to offer other children affected by epilepsy opportunities to be involved in the greatest game of all.

We hope Ellee-Rose loves the jersey as much as her dad and grandad do!

New Signings for 2015

Western Suburbs is pleased to announce that the ranks have now swelled to 16 players under contract for the 2015 Ron Massey Cup season.

Head coach Nathan Waters confirmed that the ten newest additions to the roster will include Sama Sauvao and Chad McGill.

Sauvao played a leading role in East Campbelltown’s charge to the Sydney Shield title last season and will make an impact as a strong prospect in the backline.

McGill, a Fairfield Patrician Brothers Junior who captained the Australian Schoolboys side of 2012, will join the Magpies after a stint with the Cronulla Sharks NYC team.

Wests welcome Sama and Chad aboard and look forward to a bumper 2015 season.

Major Sponsor Announcement: Allied Express

It is with great excitement that we can announce that the Western Suburbs Magpies major sponsor for 2015 is Allied Express. Having sponsored the Wests Tigers since 2005, they have now jumped on board with the Magpies to ensure the talent from the local Liverpool and Macarthur areas continue on their Pathway to Success.

Allied Express is the largest, independently owned courier and express freight company in Australia with offices in all major mainland capitals. Our fleet of over 1000 vehicles covers the entire country with a comprehensive range of fast, efficient express freight transport services ranging from the inner city bicycles to line-haul vehicles.

In fact, as long as there's a road to it, there isn't a place in this country to which we can't deliver, or from where we can't pick-up. But, like many successful express freight companies, it's what we do beyond thecourier service we advertise that sets us apart and defines us.

More than the obvious ability to move freight from one point to another, you need a courier transport partner that operates in step with your industry and can respond to its changing needs. One that mirrors your service ethic, your delivery regime and your sense of commitment to your clients. In practical terms, a courier company that thinks the way you do.

Allied operates as just such a partner. Whichever of Allied's courier or express freight services you employ our attitude remains unchanged your customers become our customers; your commitment becomes our commitment and your reputation as a consistently reliable supplier rides safely with us.

2015 HM and SGBall Draws Released

The New South Wales Rugby League has released the 2015 draws for blue-ribbon representative competitions, SG Ball (under-18s) and Harold Matthews (under-16s).

The competitions are pivotal pathways for rugby league both at the elite and grassroots levels.

Last season the Sydney Roosters finished the year as SG Ball champions while in Harold Matthews Newcastle were crowned the league's best. Both sides will be hard to beat in 2015.
Coach of the NSW VB Blues Laurie Daley vividly remembers playing in similar under-age competitions in his youth, an experience he regards as critical to development of football careers and of individuals.
“I clearly recall playing Jersey Flegg for the Raiders in 1987, a grade which was then the under-19s competition,” Daley said.
“I remember the long drives from Sydney via Goulburn, the rise in the standard of play and the great mateship we all developed.
“Under-age competitions like SG Ball and Harold Matthews are of incredible importance to rugby league. I know plenty of my Origin side graduated from the competitions – and the future of the Blues will be playing in 2015's tournaments too.
“The boys will have a lot of fun, learn a lot about themselves as players and as people and they’ll graduate from these under-age competitions with memories that’ll last a lifetime. The games will make great spectacles for the fans and players' families too.”

Tedesco's Big 3 Games of 2015

Wests junior James Tedesco discusses the three games he is really looking forward to playing in 2015.

Game #1 — R2, St. George-Illawarra Dragons, Campbelltown Sports Stadium
"It's a big game for us to start the year, so hopefully we can get a lot of fans out there. I didn't get to play a lot of games at Campbelltown so I'm looking forward to it personally."

Game #2 — R5, Parramatta Eels, ANZ Stadium
"That's the Easter weekend. We saw last year that [in that game] we had a big game of around 50,000... so hopefully we can get a similar crowd out there. I didn't get to play that game in 2014, so hopefully I'll be there and playing in front of a packed house."

Game #3 — R11, North Queensland Cowboys, Campbelltown Sports Stadium
"It's the 10-year anniversary for the 2005 Grand Final, which is exciting. Obviously we all remember Pat Richards scoring that try so hopefully we'll see a bit of that at this game. It's at Campbelltown, so hopefully we can get a big crowd building from the first game."

They'll head there in Round 2 for the Club's first home game of 2015, on Monday, March 16 at 7:00pm. The Dragons have won both matches they've played in their history at Campbelltown Sports Stadium. DVD: NRL Essentials: Western Suburbs Magpies

Step back into the annals of Rugby League history and experience some of the greatest ever games from the Western Suburbs Magpies. A foundation club, the Magpies claimed four premierships and five minor premierships, entering a “Golden Age” in the 60’s. Sit back and enjoy five classic Wests games from the Rugby League archives, each presented in their entire original broadcast format – a must-have for the true Wests fan.

1991, ROUND 7 | WESTS 17 – 16 BRONCOS
Trying to break their duck against the Broncos it was a kicking master-class from Jason Taylor that proved the difference, kicking four from four including a magnificent strike from the sideline in windy conditions the game went down to the wire until Taylor stepped up to the plate again icing the game with a field goal.

1991, PLAYOFF | WESTS 19 – 14 BULLDOGS
In a playoff for 5th place the Magpies met their Western Sydney rivals in a battle for the west and the right to play Finals Footy. It was a devastating left-foot step from Gillespie and an almost flawless kicking performance from Jason Taylor that put the Bulldogs to the sword.

1995, ROUND 5 | WESTS 44 – 16 ROOSTERS
Traveling to Darwin it was going to be a question of who could handle the conditions better. Seeking to stake their claim on the top eight, Wests put the Roosters to the sword piling on 44 points, a record against their Sydney rivals.

1996, ROUND 20 | WESTS 23 – 22 BEARS
In a tight and physical game befitting two clubs with so much history it was a long distance field goal from Andrew Willis that proved the difference, securing a dramatic and famous victory for the Wests Club.1999, ROUND 14 | WESTS 18 – 12 TIGERS
In what could be considered the most significant moment in the Magpies history, after almost 91 years in the competition pride was on the line when the storied Wests club met their eventual joint venture partner the Balmain Tigers in this classic game.

While we continue our march towards an enormous 2015 season with teams in four of the five NSWRL run competitions, we also bid farewell to a handful of players who will use 2015 as a year to recuperate, reacquaint with family and focus on their non football employment.

On behalf of the entire Magpie family, we thank Mason Talolua, Jerome Mose, Jarrad Szcudlo and Shawn Craig for their efforts in 2014 and we wish them well in their sabbatical season and (hopefully!!!) look forward to having the quadrella back on deck for season 2016!

First Signings for 2015 Ron Massey Cup

Western Suburbs is pleased to announce the first six signings for our 2015 Ron Massey Cup campaign.

In a mix of retaining current talent, bringing young blood through and returning to the glory days, new coach Nathan Waters has looked to start building a team around what is now known as the spine of a team.

As previously announced, former Wests Tiger and North Queensland Cowboy Shannon Gallant will be returning in 2015. Gallant is most comfortable at fullback but can also play wing and centre.

Continuing with building the spine, the halfback for Western Suburbs in 2015 will be Wayde Dunley, who is coming off a premiership year with East Campbelltown in the Sydney Shield. Dunley has previously played NSW Cup for Western Suburbs and will provide strong guidance around the paddock.

In a nod to youth, Peter Nay will come on board s a hooker, halfback and five-eighth. Nay played the 2014 season with Wests Tigers in the Holden Cup and is a Glenmore Park junior.

Campbelltown City Kangaroos junior Luke Williams will be returning to the Magpies on a regular basis in 2015. Williams played for the Wests Tigers NSW Cup side in 2014 while also making several appearances for the Magpies. Williams can play second row, lock or centre.

Finally, we have two returning Magpies for the 2015 season in Tom Morrison and Ronnie Palumbo. Tom has recovered well from a horror injury in 2013 and began to hit his straps late in the 2014 season. Tom can play second row or lock and is working hard at improving his speed. Ronnie is the Magpies' Mr fix it, and is comfortable at hooker, second row, lock, five-eighth or centre.

These six signings provide a strong base from which to launch a promising 2015 campaign and we look forward to announcing more signings in the coming weeks as pre-season training hots up!

Skandalis And Fulton Join Magpie Coaching Ranks

Western Suburbs is delighted to announce the return to the black and white fold of two Magpie greats!

John Skandalis will return to the club to assist our new Ron Massey Cup coach Nathan Waters in preparing the team for the 2015 season. Skando is currently finalising his exact role with the Wests Tigers and will be around the nest assisting Magic to prepare the boys for a mammoth 2015 campaign.

Meanwhile, the last man to captain a Western Suburbs team to a premiership, our 2002 SG Ball skipper Liam Fulton, is returning to assist in coaching the next generation of Wests champions in our junior representative ranks.

He will assist with both our Harold Matthews and SG Ball squads, forming part of a dynamic and young coaching core to be overseen by Leo Epifania.

We welcome Skando and Fults back to the nest, and look forward to some stellar efforts from the Magpies in all four grades in 2015!

Former Magpies Now In Group 6

The Group 6 2015 season is fast approaching and interesting to see some former Magpies players still having a crack in the comp. It continues a long legacy the Wests Magpies leave on the group when they have retired from the magpies or the wests tigers in the NRL. Back in the 90s we saw the likes of Andrew Willis, Damien Kennedy, Cameron Blair, Mitch Newton, Mark Brabek, Willie Newton etc who went onto play many more years in the group 6 competition and to this day we are still seeing the transition.

The Appin Dogs are pleased to announce the signing of Bryce Gibbs for the 2015 season.
Gibbs recently retired from the Cronulla Sharks and formerly played for the West Tigers.
The big forward played 197 NRL and four City v Country Origin games throughout his 12-year career.
His experience will go a long way to help with the development of the Appin Dogs, who only entered the Group 6 first grade competition in 2014.
Gibbs's signing was met with approval by Appin president Robert Dreis.
"Bryce was renowned for his defence and his line speed, which will be an asset in the Group 6 comp and the Appin Dogs," he said.
"We are also hoping to help Bryce get over the line a few more times to add to his four tries he managed to score in the NRL."
Gibbs also joins other former Wests Magpies now at Appin  in Stuart Flanagan & Bart Marsters.

Campbelltown City Kangaroos RLFC has announced the signing of Drew Dalton as their 1st Grade Coach for season 2015.

Dalton was the ‘Roos captain-coach throughout 2011-13, with the club making the finals in all 3 grades during 2013. Dalton remarked, “the playing group was definitely on the rise at the end of 2013. I needed a break from coaching and after the year off, I return refreshed to the task of getting the ‘Roos back up to the standards we were achieving in 2013”.

Kangaroos’ Chairman Brian Brown congratulated Dalton on his return to the Club. “Drew did a great job 2011-13 to build a football club and team from scratch that was competitive in a tough League. He’s clearly the best credentialed coach residing in the Campbelltown- Liverpool area, and with a highly supportive, positive and motivated Board ready to back him and support the players, things are looking up”.

A former Wests Magpies and Parramatta Eels NSW Cup premiership winner, Dalton is still undecided about whether or not to play in 2015. “I’ll start training and see how the body is. If there’s a young bloke who can do a better job, I won’t stand in his way. I’m happy to coach and get the best out of the boys who play for us. Our off- field is important too. New players coming to the club will feel a part of a big family. The Kangaroos will be again a Rugby League community in every sense of the phrase”.

Dalton’s appointment marks the culmination of a number of changes for the City club, with a new Board taking control of the business and administration of the Club. Brown commented that, “we now have a Board with a wide and diverse skill set, business owners, a Solicitor, an Accountant, Rugby League people with the club’s best interests at heart. A lot of good people have returned to the club already”.

A full-time employee with the NRL, Dalton pointed out that City’s players will have the benefit of up-to-date NRL coaching methods, with the emphasis on fun and enjoyment. “It’s not 1976 anymore. There are smarter and better ways to train and coach Rugby League now. Our players will benefit from that approach”.

THE Moss Vale Dragons Rugby League Football Club is pleased to announce its 2015 coaching staff.
Both the senior and junior clubs are delighted about the appointment of former Western Suburbs, Illawarra, Country Firsts and Seconds and Group 6 representative player Robbie Payne as the Dragons' head coach for next season.
The club is still interviewing applicants for the reserve grade position and expects to make an announcement in the coming weeks.
However, the Dragons are extremely pleased to appoint club stalwarts Paul Maloney as coach and John Clarke as his assistant in the under 18s.
The club hopes to assemble the 2015 player roster around a foundation of locals and the junior club players coming through.
The Dragons are calling on any interested players to make contact with the club or turn up to pre-season training, which will start at 6.45pm at Community Oval on December 2.

Camden secured former magpies front rower Ray Cashmere this year who happened to win the group 6 player of the year and reports say he may be going around for another season.

Mittagong will be weakened by the loss of the Borg Brothers to Camden and Rob Payne to Moss Vale but they have moved on and announced their coaching staff for 2015.
1st grade - Mark Thomas
Reseve grade - Corey Shepherd
Undar 18s - Cameron Arlington

Oakdale  are building for a return to first grade with the announcement of Mark DeUbago as head coach and evergreen Shane Obrien as the reserve grade coach

The oaks srlfc are still without a coach but have signed brayden Goulding to the club. brayden comes across from the Asquith magpies plus have kept the  brassington brothers as well

Narellan have signed on Shane McEnemy as coach , no word yet out of the  Picton & Thirlmere bunkers as yet

Western Suburbs 2015 Ron Massey Cup Coach Announcement

Western Suburbs is pleased to announce that Nathan Waters has been appointed coach of the Magpies for the 2015 Ron Massey Cup.

Waters played last season in the NSW Cup for the Wests Tigers before a shoulder injury ended his campaign.

Waters is a Wests junior and was part of the 2002 SG Ball premiership winning team, playing alongside several Magpie juniors who went on to the top grade, including Dean Collis, Isaac De Gois Bryce Gibbs, Ryan Hoffman and captain Liam Fulton,

Magpies' General Manager Leo Epifania said Waters would bring a fresh, young outlook to the coaching team and would provide an attractive option for players looking to compete in the Ron Massey Cup. Epifania also said that he will act as a mentor for Waters, whom Epifania believes is the best suited of any player he has had under his guidance to the role of coach.

Waters' appointment coincides with the signing of Wests junior Shannon Gallant for the 2015 season. Gallant has followed Waters through his career as captain, and now as coach.

Wests welcome Nathan to the position of head coach and look forward to a successful 2015 Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield season,

Wests Tigers: New Coach and G.M.

Wests Tigers have today announced that Phil Moss will be joining the Club as General Manager of Football Operations, with Jason Taylor appointed as NRL Head Coach.

Moss will take on the newly created General Manager of Football Operations role, having most recently held a similar position at the Penrith Panthers. Moss also spent eight years at the Parramatta Eels with his most recent position as Chief Operating Officer.

Moss’ experience is extensive in the areas of salary cap management, development pathways, and welfare & education. Moss will oversee NRL, NYC & NSW Cup administration.

Jason Taylor has been NRL Assistant Coach at the Sydney Roosters for the past two seasons, and was an integral part of their premiership win in 2013. Having previously held NRL Head Coaching roles at both the South Sydney Rabbitohs and Parramatta Eels, Taylor has shown a strong desire to develop talented youth, and has been exceptionally impressive in his aspirations to bring through the many young talented players at the Wests Tigers. Taylor is also a strong advocate for discipline and culture, saying that the Club has strong foundations that he can build on as NRL Head Coach.

A selection committee nominated by the Wests Tigers Board for the Head Coaching role comprised of CEO Grant Mayer and three directors, with one representative from Wests, Balmain, and the Independents.

The recruitment process was thorough, with a long list of candidates for both jobs. The selection committee interviewed five candidates for the NRL Head Coach role, followed by a screening process that resulted in Jason Taylor being selected for the job.

Wests Tigers Chair Marina Go said that the appointments were important steps for the Club as it looks to the 2015 season and well beyond.

“The Wests Tigers Board is thrilled to welcome Jason Taylor and Phil Moss, two highly skilled and experienced Rugby League professionals with impressive track records,” said Go. “Their appointments are key to building a new culture and setting the foundations for a successful future at Wests Tigers. This is an important step forward for our Club."

Wests Tigers CEO Grant Mayer said that the Club was looking forward to working closely with Moss and Taylor.

“Both Phil and Jason embraced all of the criteria that the club set for these roles and knowing that they have shared a strong working relationship in the past, the board and management have great confidence that they will lead the Wests Tigers forward,” Mayer said.

“The partnership between Phil and Jason is imperative with both given very clear objectives. Phil will manage the entire football program, with Jason taking on the core coaching responsibilities for the NRL squad. The demands for Head Coaches these days are so diverse that having Phil in the General Manager role will allow Jason to do what he does best.

“Jason has been given full autonomy to interview and appoint his coaching staff. No doubt his first point of call will be to meet with the existing staff to understand their individual strengths. Phil will support Jason in this endeavor and will also build a structure across NYC & NSW Cup that will compliment what the club and the NRL Team,” he said. “The key element for this relationship is that we have a very clear linear approach to how we develop our players from our grassroots program from Harold Matthews and SG Ball all the way to the NRL.

“In regards to our playing roster, many of our Members and fans rejoiced with the Club when we secured players such as Aaron Woods, Luke Brooks, Mitchell Moses, James Tedesco, David Nofoaluma and Tim Simona. A key part of the interview process was to ensure that Jason was comfortable with these players, and that he could build around this core group and Captain Robbie Farah, as well as club stalwarts like Chris Lawrence and Keith Galloway. Further recruitment and retention will fall into Jason’s core responsibility. The Club has halted all negotiations throughout this interview process to ensure our Head Coach is given the control he deserves. This process is no different to any other NRL Club or how this Club has operated historically despite what may have been reported,” Mayer said.

Both Moss and Taylor are expected to start with the club no later than October 14, which will ensure they have ample time to prepare for player’s return to 2015 pre-season training on November 3.
