Ron Massey Cup - Rnd 4 Match Review

The Entrance travelled down the F3 last Saturday to take on a Western Suburbs side looking to atone for two
straights defeats.

It was Wests who started the better, however, with Wests Tigers NSW Cup star Taqele Nayaravaro opening the scoring after a short side raid. David Attua landed the conversion and Wests were up 6-0 after 5 minutes.

The Entrance only took 5 minutes to hit back though, with a determined, burrowing run from Tigers hooker Troy Woodley paying dividends. Jake Fitzpatrick opened his account for the afternoon and the opening 12 minutes had yielded just as many points.

The Entrance were quickly in again, with former Magpie Rhys Pritchard showing a fantastic in and away.

Fitzpatrick was on target, the Tigers leading the Magpies 12-6 on 18 minutes.

Wests weren’t about to let their faithful down and quickly hit back with a left side spread allowing Tala Mapesone to collect his second of the season. David Attua was unsuccessful with the conversion, and The Entrance led 12-10 after a quarter of the game.

Wests were quickly in again through Fusti Toutai, who capitalised of a fantastic break from Nayaravaro. Attua was again unsuccessful and Wests held a fragile 14-12 lead.

The heat at Campbelltown was conducive to more attack than defence, and it only took The Entrance five minutes to find a way back into the game, with Jake Fitzpatrick sliding through some feeble Magpies defence to score. Fitzpatrick converted his own try, and the game was fast resembling a game of touch rather than rugby league.

Wests, however, had the last say, with Taqele Nayaravaro using his considerable frame to score his
second try, easily beating the cover after a break from Magpies fullback Jy Hitchcock. Attua failed with the
conversion attempt and, despite Wests scoring four tries to three, went to halftime locked at 18 all.

Western Suburbs were first to score in the second half despite The Entrance dominating the opening stages,
with popular forward Tom Morrison using his strength to pull defenders down with him in the ingoal to score
his first of the season. David Attua was on target and Wests led 24-18.

However, that was as good as it got for the home side.

Ten minutes later, The Entrance had their fourth try, with interchange hooker Scott Jones catching the Magpie markers sleeping to burrow over under the posts. Jake Fitzpatrick added the extras and the Tigers and Magpies were locked up again at 24-all.

The Entrance were quick to add to their total, with Scott Peachy capitalising on a bomb, dropped by Tuiniua Paiaaua. Fitzpatrick was doing it easy, guiding the Tigers to a 30-24 lead.

The final 15 minutes became a black, white and gold procession. Robbie Daniels and Brad Chatfield added
quick tries before Troy Adam showed enormous strength to find a way to the line. Fitzpatrick was successful with all three conversion attempts, and The Entrance and flown out to a 48-24 lead with eight minutes to play.

Robbie Daniels finished the second half demolition job with his second try after a neat backline movement for the Tigers. Jake Fitzpatrick added the extras for The Entrance and a 30 point win.

For The Entrance, Jake Fitzpatrick was a maestro with ball in hand, while the two Troys, Adam and Woodley,
got through plenty of tough stuff in the middle. For the Magpies, Taqele Nayaravaro was head and shoulders
above the rest of the Magpie side, with Fusi Toutai and Jerome Mose showing plenty of character on a losing
side.

Next week The Entrance are at home to Guildford, while Wests head to North Sydney Oval to take on Burwood-
North Ryde United, both games on Sunday.

Harold Matthews Finals Match Report

After going through the season undefeated, Western Suburbs suffered a 54-10 loss to Parramatta in the Harold Matthews Preliminary Final at St Mary’s Leagues Stadium yesterday.
The Magpies could not hold out an impressive Eels outfit that will now face South Sydney in the decider next weekend.

Despite finishing the regular season in fifth place, the Eels came out firing and went into the half time break with a 32-0 lead.

Eels centre Mark Griffiths ran in an impressive five tries and troubled the Wests defence with every touch.
Following the 32-0 half time lead, the Eels added another two tries before the Magpies got on the board through winger Harrison Coskerie.

With the score out to 48-4, Magpies second-rower Eddie Kendall scored in the corner with just three minutes remaining.

Five-eighth Hose Leuea landed an impressive goal from the touchline to make it 48-10 in what looked as though it would be the final score.
However, the Eels went over again in the dying stages with Interchange player Cameron King helping his side crack the half-century.

Parramatta 54 (Griffiths 5, Fagaloa-Time, Tramontana, Doolan, Dargan, King tries; Fonua, Dargan goals) defeated Western Suburbs 10 (Coskerie, Kendall tries; Leuea goal)

Flashback: Wests v Broncos.

On Friday 26th April 1991, Western Suburbs recorded their first ever win (and would turn out to be one of only two victories) against the Brisbane Broncos with a nail-biting 17-16 win under lights at Campbelltown Stadium. The Broncos were reduced to 12 men at around the 15 minute mark when the incumbent Australian tesst hooker, Kerrod Walters was sent off after an altercation with Graeme Wynn (subsequently, Kerrod's older brother Steve Walters became the Australian hooker and Kerrod never played for Australia again).

The Broncos scored 3 tries to 2 but it was the goalkicking of Jason Taylor who managed 4 from 4 plus a field goal that sealed the Magpies their win.

Wests Tigers today held a hugely successful school holiday clinic in Camden.

Youngsters from across the South West were treated to a day of fun and fitness at Kirkham Oval, Camden, which was recently awarded a large development grant with the help of Wests Tigers and the NRL.
Hundreds of kids enjoyed a great day out in Wests Tigers heartland.

The clinic wasn't just a chance to have fun, but also an opportunity for kids to develop their footballing skills to possibly emulate local hero James Tedesco, who played fullback for City Origin on Sunday.

Wests Tigers play the Brisbane Broncos at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday night in a game billed as a chance to catch some of the stars of State of Origin in Campbelltown.

Brisbane feature Kangaroos Sam Thaiday and Justin Hodges, as well as likely Maroons Corey Parker and Matt Gillett, amongst others.

Wests Tigers will hold another clinic in the next school holidays.

In the lead up to the Wests Tigers' big clash with Brisbane Broncos at Campbelltown Stadium, the Club is celebrating big funding grants to community rugby league clubs in the region.

Wests Tigers front rower Matt Groat along with club staff joined the NSW Minister for Sport and Recreation, Graham Annesley and representatives of the NRL to award funding grants to the Camden, Thirlmere and Campbelltown Collegians clubs.

Each club has received significant funding grants from State and Local Government for essential home ground upgrades which were achieved with the assistance of Wests Tigers and the NRL.

Wests Tigers Development Manager Ben Rogers worked in conjunction with the NRL's former Wests Tigers centre John Wilson to secure the funding.

"We've been successful with three out of three grants," said Rogers.

"In conjunction with the NRL, we've helped them write their grant application, which has never really been done before.

"As you can see from the results, it's been a great boost for the community and local rugby league."

John Wilson, now working in Game Development for the NRL, began working through the process with Rogers in late 2012.

"We got together and had a look at the needs of the area and what we're trying to do in the south west corridor," said Wilson.

"As we know, it'a a growth area and it's a good opportunity for the Wests Tigers to really branch out at a number of levels in community, game development and also their government operations.

"Under the new structure that we've undertaken, it allows us better access to identify the areas that we need and to work in with these junior clubs in where they need to grow."

Wests Tigers are this week preparing for Saturday night's Broncos clash with a multitude of high profile appearances in the Campbelltown area.

Rnd 3 - Ron Massey Cup Match Review

It was a case of black and white Déjà vu for Wests, as Blacktown recovered from a slow start to spank Wests 46-26 at HE Laybutt Reserve.

The match started promisingly for the boys from Campbelltown, with a barnstorming kick return from Tala Mapesone creating the opportunity for David Attua to touch down three tackles later. Attua missed the fairly simply conversion attempt, but the Magpies were still up 4-0 in as many minutes.

Wests posted their second try three minutes later, with some weak Blacktown defence exposed by Tom Morrison, whose strong run on the right flank resulted in points. Attua converted the second time round, with the Magpies leading 10-0.

Blacktown showed plenty of grit and resilience but it was the Magpies next to score, with a magnificent long ball from Nathan Rumsby to Tuiniua Paiaaua and a step to match from Paiaaua as he posted the black and white’s third try of the afternoon. Attua was successful with the two points, taking Wests to 16-0.

Just like last week, Wests led 16-0 after half an hour. And just like last week, Wests conceded three soft tries in the last ten minutes before half time.

The first came from a Bradlee Cummings intercept, fortunately for Blacktown as Wests had numbers on their left side. Jarrod Brackenhoffer converted from in front to pull the margin back to 16-6.

Workers were in again four minutes later, with James Davies stretching out through some tired and feeble Wests defence to score under the posts. Brackenhoffer again added the two and Blacktown were back in the game at 16-12.

Right on half time, Wests chose to spread the ball, but a knock on and quick ball movement saw the ball shifted to Waqa Blake, who had too much pace for a gallant Dean Rysko. Brackenhoffer added his third conversion from in front and Blacktown somehow found themselves up 18-16 at the interval.

The second half was only seven minutes old when Blacktown posted their fourth try. A kick through was badly fumbled by the Magpies, with Bradlee Cummings on hand to register his second of the afternoon. Brackenhoffer easily concerted and Blacktown skipped out to a 24-16 lead.

Wests were determined to ensure the game didn’t get away from them this week, and they nearly found the line on fifteen minutes only to be held up. From the ensuing play the ball, the Wests Tigers combinations paid dividends, with a wonderful ball from Adrian Haangana finding a barnstorming Inno Innoesio to score under the posts. David Attua added the extras and Wests were back to within two.

However, all the Magpie’s work was undone on the hour, with a lightning fast Fakeo Dibeci running around a compressed Magpies defence before making Sam Aiga look like a statue to score under the posts. Brackenhoffer duly put Blacktown back out to an eight point lead with his conversion.

Five minutes later, Blacktown all but sealed the game with a last tackle passing movement resulting in a rather soft Jean Le Knox out wide. Brackenhoffer missed the tricky conversion attempt, Blacktown up 34-22 with just over ten minutes to play.

Wests weren’t done though, and Inno Innoesio showed some incredible strength to carry three defenders over the line as he scored his second of the game. David Attua failed with the conversion, and although Wests only trailed 34-26 with 11 minutes on the clock, the margin clearly weighed them down.

Blacktown finished off the match with a try for Jarrod Brackenhoffer despite howls of protest from the Wests faithful over a forward pass in the lead up and a second for Fakeo Dibeci, who capitalised off a neat inside pass from Bradlee Cummings. Brackenhoffer was successful with both conversion attempts, Blacktown posting a comfortable 20 point victory.

For Blacktown, Jarrod Brackenhoffer was a thorn in the side of the Wests defence, whileJake Attard and Michael Ross led the way in the pack. For the Magpies, Soni Passi was a human wrecking ball, beating the first tackle every time, while Adrian Haangana and, yet again, Dean Rysko, had big games.

Next week Blacktown head to McCredie Park to face off against Guildford, while the Magpies fly back to their nest in Campbelltown to take on The Entrance.

105 Years Ago Today... We came to Play

One hundred and five years ago today, Western Suburbs played their first competition match when the inaugural NSWRL season of 1908 kicked off. Easter Monday, 20th April 1908 saw the NSWRL stage double headers at Wentworth Park and Birchgrove Oval. For Western Suburbs, it wasn't the start they wanted, going down to current joint-venture partner, Balmain by 24-0. (other results that famous day were Souths 11 def Norths 7 at Birchgrove whilst at Wentworth Park, Easts 32 def Newtown 16 and Glebe 8 def Newcastle 5).

The Wests team that day was

fullback: G Duffin; threequarters: C Blake, B Duggan, T Phelan, P Franks; halves: R Gormley, L Gormley; fowards: J Abercrombie, T Mount, J Stack (capt), E Mead, W Elliot, A Brown.

Western Suburbs would go onto to win just one match that year, a one point victory over Newtown.

Below is a team photo during the 1908 season.

Five years ago on this day in 2008, Western Suburbs and Balmain returned to Birchgrove Oval for the celebration of the Centenary of Rugby League.

On that day the tables were turned and Western Suburbs defeated Balmain 36-24 in their NSW Cup clash.

Ron Massey Cup - Rnd 2 Match Review

Windsor overcame an early scare to dispatch Western Suburbs 50-22 last Saturday at Campbelltown Stadium.

The late inclusion of Wests Tigers young gun Matt Groat seemed to boost the enthusiasm of the young magpies and Groat made an immediate impact, touching down after just two minutes, a strong run up the middle of the Wolves defence ensuring that Windsor knew they were dealing with an NRL player. David Atuau added the extras from in front for an early 6-0 lead.

Wests showed plenty of enthusiasm and creativity, even if they occasionally lacked for execution, with the magpie’s energy also costing them some silly penalties.

However, Wests overcame this and added to their early lead on 20 minutes, with Adrian Haangana going through a gaping hole behind the Windsor markers to touch down. David Atuau converted from a simple position to extend the Wests lead to 12-0.

Seven minutes later, Wests were in again, Jerome Mose touching down out wide after an enormous show of strength by Mason Harrison to stand and offload. Atuau was unsuccessful with the far more difficult conversion attempt from fives metres inside the western touchline, the Magpies cruising at 16-0.

Then came a seven minute period leading into the break which shook the confidence of the black and whites to the core. Seven minutes before the break, Jake Butler-Fleming found himself with plenty of space to get around his opposite number to score. Liam Ayoub missed the conversion, Windsor trailing 16-4.

Four minutes later, a dummy half run from Liam Ayoub showed that Wests were also having problems marking up behind their markers, Ayoub darting through the gap and racing 60 metres despite the despairing dive of Sam Aiga. Ayoub converted his own try from in front to reduce the deficit to 16-10.

Then, just as the first half was winding down, Windsor kicked as the siren sounded, and what could only be described as a room service bounce found Eddie Aiona streaming through to collect the ball and touch down under the posts. Liam Ayoub added the extras to leave the Magpies and Wolves locked at 16-16 at the break.

The interval seemed to knock Wests around, with plenty of ill discipline and dropped ball in the second half.

Windsor took just 11 minutes to find the line, with Atonio Pelasasa strolling through some terrible defence to score. Liam Ayoub converted to put Windsor in front for the first time with just under half an hour remaining.

Two minutes later, Hutch Maiava was on the receiving end of a hot potato raid down the Wests left hand side to put Windsor out by more than a single score. Ayoub was doing it easy bynow, easily converting for a 28-16 lead.

The game took a dour turn across the next ten minutes, and the drop in intensity was shown up perfectly by Chris Satae, who strolled across field off a goal line drop out before finding a hole in the Magpie line. Ayoub added the extras for a 34-16 lead.

Windsor then turned on the flair three minutes later, with Nick Mataia darting down the right wing before kicking desperately in field, a surprisingly fast Krys Freeman backing up to dive on the loose ball for a try under the posts. Ayoub added his fifth goal of the day for a 40-16 lead with 13 minutes to play.

Five minutes later, Windsor found room on the left flank, with Kieren Croft outpacing Sam Aiga with a spectacular lunge for the corner. Liam Ayoub was unable to add the extras, Windsor leading 44-16 as the lights kicked in.

Four minutes later, a Ben Stewart grubber kick found Liam Ayoub steaming in to add his second of the day. He proceeded to convert his own try, and Windsor had hit the half century with four minutes on the clock.

A plucky Wests would have the last say, though, with a wide kick bouncing kindly for Fusi Toutai to score as time ticked over. David Atuau piloted the conversion through from the touchline for a 50-22 scoreline at fulltime.

Windsor’s halves dominated, with Hutch Maiava leading the way in the pack. For the Magpies, Sam Aiga and Dean Rysko again led the way, with Inno Innoesio showing great enthusiasm off the bench.

Next weekend, Windsor head home to face off against Guildford, while Wests head up the M7 to face off against Blacktown.

Magpie Mascot Returns For Heritage Match

Its been a long time coming but wests magpies very own mascot Morris the Magpie will make a triumphant return to the big time on sunday in the hertiage match at the SCG between wests tigers & st george illawarra. Since the merger morris the magpie hasnt been seen at too many NRL fixtures but former magpie and current chairmen Mick Liubinskas & mangager of football operations Steve Reeves pulled some strings and made a call to morris and he accepted with a squark !! All you kiddies on the fence make sure you say hi to him and get as many photos as you can.

The match celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the 1963 grand final match between the wests magpies & st george dragons which many say wests were robbed.

I haven't forgiven him: Kelly

Australian Hooker of the Century and Wests legend Noel Kelly has lost none of the famous fire which saw him develop a reputation as one of the most fearsome players in the rugby league world.

Wests Tigers will this week celebrate the 50th anniversary of Western Suburbs' famous 8-3 loss to the mighty St George in the 1963 Grand Final at the SCG.

Controversy surrounding the referring performance of Darcy Lawler persists to this day, with Kelly and others still convinced Lawler had a wager on a St George victory.

"Having been there, having seen it all take place, it's pretty hard to forget," said Kelly.
"We were never going to win, simple as that."

An apparent try for Wests was ruled out and Johnny King scored a try for St George after appearing to be tackled by two Wests players.

"He's been told to get up," said Kelly. "The referee told him to get up and he was telling us to get off him.
"No I haven't forgiven him, how could I?

"We were all struggling, battling to work and play. We were getting no money to play, getting belted every weekend.

"To see yourself in a position to win… If Wests were to have won that Grand Final all that images of Ian Walsh and blokes like that holding up the trophy, that would have been us.

"That would have been Arthur Summons standing up there."

Kelly and the other stars from that famous Grand Final became part of arguably the greatest Kangaroo side to ever go on tour, claiming the Ashes in England for the first time following a 50-12 destruction of the previously all conquering British.

Wests and St George players made up a large part of that touring side and the friendships formed in the earlier 1960s are testament to power of Rugby League ability to bring people together.

"The 60's were the greatest days, I'd do it all again," said Kelly.

"We're all great mates. Our wives are too. When we'd play them at the SCG, all our wives would sit together.

"I still go out and see Reg Gasnier and the others."

3pm on Sunday will be a special time for Kelly and his mates as the two sides make their way on to the SCG they've graced so many times before.

"It just makes you feel good to walk out there," said Kelly.

"I enjoy watching the young players get their chance. They've got plenty of guts.

"We should never have left the SCG."

Lawrence proud to pull on Magpie Jersey Again

Wests Tigers centre Chris Lawrence was the guest columnist for the weekly 'Tiger Talk' column.
The colum is part of a weekly Tiger Talk feature in the Campbelltown Advertiser each Wednesday.

We may have been beaten but I know we walked off AAMI Park on Monday night proud of our performance.

No one likes to get beaten in professional sport. You work so hard all week in preparing for a match and then it comes down to an 80 minute performance.

For us on Monday night, I thought we played very well against the Melbourne Storm but the pressure of not seeing much ball and doing plenty of defensive work told in the back end.

The Storm are not premiers and world club champions for no reason. However I thought we threw plenty at them in attack and we looked dangerous at times.

Our defence was much better than the previous week’s loss to Manly.

We took plenty of confidence out of our performance and we will look to capitalise on this when we take on the rejuvenated St George-Illawarra Dragons at the Sydney Cricket Ground this Sunday.

As a Magpies junior, I will be very proud again to pull on the Western Suburbs heritage jersey as the Club celebrates the 50th anniversary of the 1963 Grand Final between the Magpies and the Dragons.

The Dragons won the premiership that year but the match is well remembered for the famous ‘Gladiators’ photo of rivals captains Arthur Summons (Wests) and Norm Provan (St George).

I speak on behalf of all my team-mates when I say we are very much looking forward to playing on the hallowed turf of the SCG.

Having played there before and being a sports lover myself, it is a just a wonderful feeling to be able to run onto the turf that has graced so many champions in the past.

You can’t help but get caught up in the history of the SCG, especially in the dressing rooms where you see endless records of Test cricket centuries scored there and some of the names that have sat there before us. It certainly does give you a lift.

Wests Tigers have planned a huge range of entertainment and activities to mark the occasion and I encourage plenty of our fans to head out to the SCG for what will be a wonderful day.

Players from the 1963 Grand Final will do a lap of honour before the main game too. It is always great to remember our past champions so make sure you give them a warm round of applause.

Tickets are still available for the match. I can’t wait for Sunday.

R.I.P Jake Kedzlie

The teenage grandson of Western Suburbs legend Tommy Raudonikis died in hospital after suffering critical head injuries during a weekend match on the NSW north coast.

The family of Jake Kedzlie, 15, made the agonising decision to switch off his life support on Monday morning after he was struck in the head during an Under 16s match in Toormina, just south of Coffs Harbour, on Saturday.

On behalf of all the Wests Magpies community (our Board, Wests Ashfield, players, coaches , officials , members and supporters), we offer both Tommy and the rest of Jakes family our condolences and support during this tough time.

Heritage Round Blockbuster at SCG

Wests Tigers are expecting the biggest crowd of the season to pack the Sydney Cricket Ground for the blockbuster Heritage Round 6 fixture against St George-Illawarra Dragons.

Wests Tigers are out for revenge against St George-Illawarra when we take on the Dragons at the SCG 50 years after the legendary 1963 Grand Final.

Both clubs will wear replica 1963 jerseys on Sunday, April 14 3.00pm at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
In a game that went down in infamy, the mighty St George defeated Western Suburbs 8-3 on their way to 11 consecutive premierships, in a game shrouded in refereeing controversy.

The Grand Final is also famous for providing the stage for the most famous photo in Australian Rugby League - the Gladiators image, which now adorns the NRL trophy.

The Gladiators, Wests halfback Arthur Summons and St George enforcer Norm Provan, will be on hand at the SCG with a host of other legends from the era in what will be a truly special occasion.

Wests Tigers are encouraging supporters to secure their seats early in anticipation of the huge crowd expected.

Epifania philosophic about Magpies 2013 season

The Western Suburbs Magpies will make their debut in the Ron Massey Cup in season 2013, with the famous foundation club looking to rebuild through the third-tier competition.

Speaking with NSWRL Media, Coach Leo Epifania revealed the Magpies have had to ‘start from scratch’ leading into their Round One clash with Auburn this weekend.

“The way things have gone with Western Suburbs and joining the Ron Massey Cup means we’re back to square one,” Epifania said.

“We’ve had to put together a squad who weren’t concerned about money and were just focused on playing football and that’s a culture we’ve always tried to foster at the club.”

Epifania, a former Western Suburbs junior and first grade player, admitted that whilst the current situation wasn’t ideal, he was prepared to take the up the challenge of restoring the Magpies once again.

“I’ve been involved with Wests for a long time and we’ve had to do this a few times before.

“We’re not a team that’s kept 10 players from last year’s squad, and the way things are with the Wests Tigers merger means we sometimes don’t know where we are leading into a season.

“Ideally we’d like to have the core of a team in place but unfortunately rebuilding is just part of a coach’s job… we have a good crop of young guys here with a heap of potential who want to further their careers so it’s a positive time.”

Despite the difficulties associated with rebuilding an entire team, Epifania still has high aspirations for the foundation club and hopes the addition of new players will bring a sense of enthusiasm to the club.

“As a coach, I know no other way than to build towards the finals,” Epifania added.

“If I feel there a people or positions that aren’t cutting it and stopping us from achieving our goals then I’ll keep searching for the right squad until it comes together.

“I’m not expecting it to all come together for Round 1… but I’m hopeful we’ll get it right throughout the year and we’ll see progress sooner rather than later.”

Match Report - Ron Massey Cup Round 1 - Western Suburbs Magpies v Auburn Warriors

Ron Massey Cup debutants Western Suburbs opened their 2013 account with a gritty 18-8 victory over Auburn at a damp and overcast Lidcombe Oval.

Auburn were hit with injury before kick-off, losing prop Hala Akauloa during the warm-up, and they struggled early to contain the initially enthusiastic Magpies.

Auburn had the first genuine opportunity of the match after seven minutes, with a break on their left flank for Harmony Hunt. However, Wests custodian Sam Aiga was not only up for the challenge, but flattened Hunt in the one on one challenge.

However, Auburn only had to wait five minutes for their next chance, and this time they took full advantage, with a sweeping backline movement catching Wests short on the Western side, a short kick in field finding Cliff Nye, who touched down just inside the Western touchline. Damien Mostyn was unsuccessful with the conversion attempt, Auburn up 4-0 on 13 minutes.

Auburn dominated the Magpies pack, with several poor attacking options from Wests punctuated by Auburn penalties and plenty of dropped ball from the Black and Whites. Although Auburn failed to make much impression on the Magpies in attack, their composure allowed for plenty of energy to be expended in a big defensive effort.

Auburn capitalised on consecutive penalties, first for a shoulder charge and then, off for hands on the ball on the very next tackle, to add to the score on the half hour, with a left side backline move finding an unmarked Fiteli Fatai, who scrambled over in the South-Eastern corner. Once again, though, Damien Mostyn found the difficult conversion attempt a bridge too far, and Auburn found themselves ahead 8-0 after 31 minutes.

The Magpies had their best first half chance after an awkward kick-off resulted in an Auburn knock-on, but poor handling ensured the try went begging. The remainder of the first half was marred by poor ball handling, with the Warriors going into half time up 8-0.

Both sides opened the second half full of energy, with Auburn unable to add to their first half tally despite some excellent backline movement. However, it only took five minutes for Wests to begin to control the momentum, with a high tackle penalty followed by a desperate lunge by Auburn to knock the ball on with the Magpies having two unmarked men on the outside.

The Magpies took advantage of their early momentum, with a strong run by Tala Mapesone seeing him carry two defenders over the line to score as Mapesone injured his shoulder. Late inclusion David Atuau was successful with his conversion attempt, bringing the Magpies back within two points at 8-6.

Both sides threw caution to the wind, with the Magpies determined to capitalise on their momentum, while the Warriors needed to halt the flow of the game. The Warriors started to get on top of the Magpies pack and on 61 minutes, the Warriors nearly got through some feeble defence. However, on the next tackle, the ball popped loose and, with Auburn’s attack having compressed, the Magpies immediately spun the ball to the left, with Tuiniua Paiaaua racing 50 metres to put the Magpies in front. The difficult conversion attempt was missed by David Atuau, Wests up 10-8 on the hour.

Auburn fullback Michael Gibson coughed up the ball after a tackle which looked a little high, however referee Scot Murray called a knock-on, and the Magpies took advantage at the end of the set. As Wests looked to pass wide, Auburn rushed up and Magpies five-eighth Nathan Rumsby had no choice but to kick for winger Amanono Tovio. Tovio showed incredible skill to not only mark the ball but to tip toe along the dead ball line before throwing it back in, with centre Fusi Toutai on hand to ground the loose ball. Atuau was again unsuccessful with the conversion attempt, Wests holding a 14-8 lead going into a tense last 15 minutes.

Despite Auburn’s need for a try, they never looked like breaking the Magpies line. There was no lack of effort on the Warrior’s part, but the scrambling defence for the Magpies was immense, even if their defence in the middle sometimes left a little to be desired.

As the Magpies sought to set up for a match-winning field goal, second rower Mason Harrison decide four was better than one, with a bustling charge, in which he beat the same two defenders twice, to score adjacent to the posts. David Atuau missed with the simple conversion attempt, Wests getting out to an 18-8 lead with just 30 seconds to play.

Auburn’s gallant attempt to claim a consolation try was in vain, with the short kick-off being knocked on.

For the Magpies, Sam Aiga was immense at the back in a sublime performance, while Soni Paasi and Dean Rysko led the way for the Magpie’s pack.

Wests coach Leo Epifania said that, while he was pleased with the big pick-up in enthusiasm in the second half, there was plenty of work still to do.

Next week, the Magpies return to Campbelltown to take on Windsor, with kick-off at 5pm Saturday, while Auburn head out to McCredie Oval to face against against another RMC debutant in Guildford.

WESTS 18 (Tala Mapesone, Tuiniua Paiaaua, Fusi Toutai, Mason Harrison tries; David Atuau 1 from 4) def AUBURN 8 (Cliff Nye, Fiteli Fatai tries; Damien Mostyn 0 from 2)
